During his short reign in the 4th century, Emperor Julian II, known as the Apostate, attempted to combat Christianity philosophically and to set up a pagan Neo-Platonic doctrine as a counter-programme. The volume presents a collection of papers on the general relationship between Platonism and Christianity, on Julian's character and his philosophical programme and on individual writings in which the Emperor sets out his own position and his critique of Christian thought.
Did you know most of our patterns of behavior are set by the time
we are six years old? No wonder it's so hard to change Even when
we're committed to making a change in life, it's always an uphill
battle. But there is a secret to lasting change that God gave us
long before modern neuroscience and self-help gurus were the norm.
This convenient text utilizes material from the well-received "Dictionary of Scripture and Ethics" to introduce students to the use of the New Testament for moral formation. It will serve as an excellent supplementary text in New Testament courses. The stellar list of contributors includes Robert Brawley, Bruce Chilton, Charles Cosgrove, David deSilva, Victor Paul Furnish, and Glen Harold Stassen.
Since the beginning of the media age, there have been thinkers who have reacted against the increasing power of the mass media and perceived its ever-more-pervasive role in historical development. This book examines those early mass media critics and their controversial writings, and it links them with their contemporaries to demonstrate the relevance of their legacy for today's debates on media power and media ethics. Included in this book is a look at the work of Karl Kraus and his devastating critiques of the role of corrupt journalism in the First World War; at Ferdinand Tvnnies' provocative analysis of the relationship between public opinion and propaganda; and at the "Frankfurt School," especially Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno, in the shadow of the experience of Nazism. The Glasgow Media Group unmasks ideological bias in apparently objective news. The importance and influence of the much-contested figure of Marshall McLuhan is analyzed, as is the work of Robert McChesney and the United States' tradition from which his own writing and collaboration with fellow critical intellectuals Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman emerged. From Jeszs Martmn-Barbero in Colombia and Nestor Garcia Canclini in Mexico, comes a perspective on globalizing mass communications practice. The media-critical work of Harold Innis, Northrop Frye, David Suzuki, Maude Barlow and the black American feminist writer, bell hooks, make this book truly one of the first full historical surveys of radical mass media criticism. Anthology contributors are a team of leading international experts in the field and, apart from the editors, include: Slavko Splichal, Hanno Hardt, Joost van Loon, Stuart Allen, Jason Barker, John Eldridge, Robert McChesney, James Winter and Cynthia Carter. David Berry is senior lecturer in journalism, culture and mass communications and John Theobald is associate professor in modern languages, both at the Southampton Institute, U.K.

Christianity Today 2014 Book Award Winner 2013 Word Guild Award (Apologetics/Evangelism) The modern apologetic enterprise, according to Myron Penner, is no longer valid. It tends toward an unbiblical and unchristian form of Christian witness and does not have the ability to attest truthfully to Christ in our postmodern context. In fact, Christians need an entirely new way of conceiving the apologetic task. This provocative text critiques modern apologetic efforts and offers a concept of faithful Christian witness that is characterized by love and grounded in God's revelation. Penner seeks to reorient the discussion of Christian belief, change a well-entrenched vocabulary that no longer works, and contextualize the enterprise of apologetics for a postmodern generation.

Bestselling author Dutch Sheets takes a fresh look at a very specific kind of prayer that concerns nearly every Christian. How to pray for the salvation of our friends and families. Sheets begins by examining several strategic biblical principles for effectively interceding for the unsaved. He also looks at the various schemes used by Satan to prevent our loved ones from recognizing the truth of the Word of God. He shows how the enemy's schemes can be defeated and how we, as believers, can open windows of opportunity for the lost to be able to truly hear and receive the good news of Jesus Christ.

God loves us and has a unique blueprint for our life--but it's up to us to find it and live it out. Mingling contemporary stories and biblical anecdotes with practical advice, Silvoso shows how God intervenes in human affairs today to transform people and nations. He also shares five critical paradigms for transformation that are pivotal for change: Discipling Nations, Reclaiming the Marketplace, Looking at Work as Worship, Becoming Salt and Light, and Eliminating Poverty. In these pages, readers will find extraordinary stories about the power of God working through those who discovered their specific purpose. Then they'll be challenged to transform themselves and, by doing so, transform their families, schools, businesses, and nations. Silvoso encourages readers to aim high, knowing that God has entrusted them with great things. "God sees you as a nation transformer," says Silvoso. He has faith in you!

Every year thousands of God's servants leave the ministry convinced they are failures. Years ago, in the midst of a crisis of faith, Kent Hughes almost became one of them. But instead he and his wife Barbara turned to God's Word, determined to learn what God had to say about success and to evaluate their ministry from a biblical point of view. This book describes their journey and their liberation from the "success syndrome"-the misguided belief that success in ministry means increased numbers. In today's world it is easy to be seduced by the secular thinking that places a number on everything. But the authors teach that true success in ministry lies not in numbers but in several key areas: faithfulness, serving, loving, believing, prayer, holiness, and a Christlike attitude. Their thoughts will encourage readers who grapple with feelings of failure and lead them to a deeper, fuller understanding of success in Christian ministry. This book was originally published by Tyndale in 1987 and includes a new preface.
Like the Classical Tarots, this deck marks the coming of age of Tarot in Italy. The classic design of the Marseilles decks, reinvented by an anonymous artist, exemplifies 19th century Italian art: detailed, symbolic, and richly colored in vibrant greens, muted reds, and vivid golds. The whole decadently costumed array of Tarot archetypes are presented here, along with delicately ornamented Marseilles style pips. The Court cards are alive with personality -- the Queen of Swords looks like fun, but the club she is holding adds an ominous element. The card names are in Italian and the numbers of the Major Arcana appear in all four corners and at the center top.
From the KJV to the NIV, NLT, ESV, and beyond, English Bible translations have never been as plentiful as they are today. This proliferation has also brought confusion regarding translation differences and reliability. This book brings clarity to the issues and makes a strong case for an essentially literal approach. Taking into account the latest developments in Bible translation, Leland Ryken expertly clarifies the issues that underlie modern Bible translation by defining the terms that govern this discipline and offering a helpful Q&A. He then contrasts the two main translation traditions-essentially literal and dynamic equivalence-and concludes with sound reasons for choosing the former, with suggestions for using such a translation in the church. This book will appeal to thoughtful readers who have questions about Bible translation; individuals, churches, and ministries in the process of choosing a translation; and college and seminary students and faculty.
