This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First
International Conference on Coordination Languages and Models,
COORDINATION '96, held in Cesena, Italy in April 1996. Over the
last few years, a new class of models, formalisms, and mechanisms
for describing concurrent and distributed computations has emerged.
A characteristic feature of these coordination languages and models
is that they are based on (generative) communication via a shared
data space. The 21 revised full papers presented were selected from
a total of 78 submissions; also included are three invited papers
and 10 posters. All in all, these papers report the state of the
art in this young and active area of research and development.
It's time to leave behind the tired nature-versus-nurture debate.
In Dancing Cockatoos and the Dead Man Test , Marlene Zuk asks a
more fascinating question: How does behaviour evolve, and how is
that process similar-and different-in people and animals? Drawing
from a wealth of research, including her own on insects, she
explores how genes and the environment work together to produce
cockatoos that dance to rock music and ants that heal their injured
companions. She follows the different paths cats and dogs took to
living with humans and asks whether bees are domestic animals. In
exploring intelligence, mating behaviour and fighting disease, Zuk
turns to smart spiders, silent crickets and crafty crows. She shows
how neither our behaviour nor that of other animals is dictated
solely by genes, and that animal behaviour can be remarkably
similar to human behaviour-and wonderfully complicated in its own
right.
When Charles Whitman sprayed bullets in a brutal killing spree from
the heights of the University of Texas clock tower in 1966, he
single-handedly made history by dashing the security of millions
and changing law enforcement forever. In the wake of this
horrifying event, SWAT - Special Weapons and Tactics - teams were
born. Since that time, such desperate, bloody face-offs with police
have steadily increased, making SWAT an invaluable and necessary
part of law enforcement. Captain Snow, author of the acclaimed
Protecting Your Life, Home, and Property, and a police officer with
over 25 years experience, delivers to the reader the immediacy of
actual SWAT events - including both the notorious and the bizarre.
We get a chilling glimpse into the desperate, twisted mind of the
hostage taker - often hovering precariously between violence and
suicide - and witness the brilliant, life-saving strategies SWAT
commanders put into action to stop them. As Captain Snow
demonstrates, whether intervening during a tension-filled hostage
showdown or serving an arrest warrant to a heavily armed drug lord,
SWAT teams are, in general, uniquely prepared to handle the most
volatile and life-threatening police situations with poise, speed,
and - when necessary - deadly force. From the unnerving events in
Waco to the thousands of successes every year, Snow analyzes what
works and doesn't work in a SWAT team. When the smoke clears, we
find at the heart of this book the inspiring story of professionals
who have dedicated their lives to saving others. Captain Snow gives
us the real story behind the Hollywood image - at once exciting and
sobering - of this relatively new and increasingly vital branch of
law enforcement.
As the millennium approaches, apocalyptic fervor is sweeping the
nation. Militias, white supremacists, survivalists, and cults have
seized upon the Book of Revelation to trumpet their own fractured
version of the end of the world. Millennium Rage is the only book
that connects the strands of these fringe groups to a tradition
that has underpinnings in American culture and mainstream religion.
It moreover shows that many of these groups have stolen and twisted
apocalyptic religious symbols to fit their own end: gearing up for
Armageddon in this world, not the next. The Oklahoma bombers, the
Sons of Gestapo, the Branch Davidians, and the Unabomber are, as
Philip Lamy astutely demonstrates, extreme examples of burgeoning
strains within society. "Ruby Ridge" and "Waco" have become
rallying cries of a growing number of average Americans who feel
disenfranchised and forgotten. Members of militia movements and
white supremacists, whom Lamy interviewed for this book, have
tapped into their reservoir of discontent and are channeling it for
their own aims. As Lamy points out, rugged individualists and
utopian groups have always dotted the American landscape. What is
alarming, however, is the misuse of the Christian apocalypse to
promote a religion that fans the flames of hate, preaching the
destruction of minorities - including Jews, blacks, and immigrants
- in a whirlwind showdown. Lamy asserts that this new religion,
"Christian Identity," serves as a unifying factor among an array of
extremist groups who call for a battle here on earth against
Satan's supposed forces - minorities allegedly bent on a worldwide
conspiracy to rule the world. Distorting the Bible and other
literature through a prism of hate and fear, they have made some
inroads into the consciousness of America, according to Lamy.
Fifty-two meditations on Psalm 27 instruct and encourage
believers to worship God through the ups and downs of life.
Psalm 27 is a psalm of trouble and worship, of difficulty and
beauty, of the evil of people against people, and of the mercy of
God. Because of its honesty about life in this fallen world, Psalm
27 speaks into the life of every believer. At the same time it
places joyful and self-sacrificing worship right next to the
trouble that is the psalm's background theme. This juxtaposition
makes Psalm 27 unique, interesting, practical, challenging, and
encouraging.
A Shelter in the Time of Storm takes readers through this
roller-coaster-ride of a psalm in fifty-two brief and engaging
meditations. These meditations are designed to fill hearts with a
patient hope that grows stronger as the trouble-spotted days go by.
Reflection questions at the end of the chapter make these
meditations thought-provoking and practical.
To counter a growing threat of Soviet submarines and aircraft
shortly after WWII, the Royal Netherlands Navy ordered new ships.
Classified as ASW destroyer (onderzeebootjager), but so close to
contemporary destroyers in terms of specifications. Still suffering
from the havoc of war the national industry managed to design and
construct these ships in two classes. Drenthe was of the more
capable Type 47B series.

Howard Beach The Central Park Jogger The Assassination of Alan Berg
Vincent Chin's Murder The Portland Skinhead Slaying Headlines
scream of the latest in a wave of hate crime attacks. Hate
crime-violence aimed at individuals because they are members of a
particular group - were once considered the rare illegal actions of
a small but vocal assortment of extremists who thrived on hating
minorities. No more. Hate crimes have been sweeping the nation - as
well as the world. They are happening in even the most unlikely of
places. Whereas college campuses at one time epitomized the lofty
principles of tolerance, diversity, and idealism, they have now
become the repositories of hatred and division. Hate is hip on
campus, as evidenced not only by the popularity of racist and
misogynistic music, but by the recent rash of attacks against
blacks, women, Asians, Latinos, Jews, and gays. These perceptive
authors step back to reveal how the campus of hate has become a
microcosm for the world at large. This expose by Jack Levin, one of
America's leading sociologists and co-author of Mass Murder:
America's Growing Menace, and Jack McDevitt, America's foremost
authority on hate crimes, explores the spreading venom of prejudice
and bigotry in our society and the world. They proclaim that
political correctness - as in tolerance of diversity - is no longer
deemed fashionable but, rather, obsolete. Organized hate groups
have been taking our alienated youth by storm. But beyond bemoaning
our present crisis, Levin and McDevitt set forth practical
guidelines on how to stem the rising tide of hate. These experts
persuasively argue that as the economic pie shrinks, a new type of
terrorism is leaving a trail of bloodshed and destruction in its
wake. For anyone who is different, the message of this new brand of
terrorism is unmistakable: Either flee or be killed. These
courageous and provocative analysts force us to face a spiraling
problem around us as well as the prejudices within
Sometimes it feels like life's falling apart at the seams.
Sometimes you're completely worn out by stresses that never seem to
end. For every woman who has been disappointed, who has watched a
dream die, whose life isn't what she imagined it would be,
bestselling author Holley Gerth has a heartfelt message of
hope--you really "are" going to be okay. And it "is" possible to
live with joy, resilience, and strength in both the good times and
the bad. In fact, she says, that's what God desires for us.
With her trademark positive encouragement and probing questions for
self-reflection, Holley encourages women to spend less of their
lives regretting and more of their lives truly living. She shows
them how to guard their hearts against despair and look to the
future with confidence, remembering that they are part of a greater
plan and "nothing "can stop God's purposes for them.
Divorce is a tragedy--a tragedy that occurs one million times a
year. How you look back upon this crucial milestone in your life is
your choice. Following the practical advice offered in this
essential book can help you acquire the tools that will make all
the difference in the world. As so many of Gold's clients have
said, I failed at my marriage. I'm not going to fail at my divorce.
After his debut with Boosting the Underachiever: How Busy Parents
Can Unlock Their Child's Potential, Dr Victor Cogen, this time,
focuses his unique vision on inspiring the adolescent underachiever
- a normal, healthy teenager who just isn't getting the grades he
or she should. Here, Dr Cogen tackles the intricacies of the
adolescent mind. His innovative approach goes beyond the
stereotypical views of the teenage personality and teaches parents
how they can personally take advantage of their adolescent's
developing cognitive and emotional abilities. Adolescents are
trapped between a world of fantasy created to help them escape from
failure, and a growing need to become part of the real world of
adults. This book explains how to appeal to the developing and
sensitive people these children are becoming and discover the
source of their poor scholastic records.
We all need a creative space: a blank canvas where we can doodle
our masterpieces; a white page where we can jot down our innermost
thoughts; a secret place where we can unleash our wildest
imaginings and let them roam free for a while. And what could be
finer than finding that creative space populated by flights of
fancy that help stir those very doodles, scribbles and imaginings?
The Creative Space Journal is a journal through 100 art projects,
offering prompts and projects, sparks and nudges, ideas and
inspirations for activities to reflect, enhance or change your
mood. Its pages present beautifully illustrated exercises designed
to add some art and mischief to your world, and to make your life
more imaginative and inventive. They are surrounded by frames and
spaces, lines and bullets, where you can record your adventures.
The journal provides a safe place where you can retreat and allow
your creativity to flourish. Organised to reflect your head space -
Happy, Sad, Angry, Relaxed, Playful, Bored, Wired or Sleepy - it's
the perfect companion to dip in and out of, explore by mood or fill
with your creativity from cover to cover. Travel into your creative
space, and create a journal that is uniquely yours.
