This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First
International Conference on Coordination Languages and Models,
COORDINATION '96, held in Cesena, Italy in April 1996. Over the
last few years, a new class of models, formalisms, and mechanisms
for describing concurrent and distributed computations has emerged.
A characteristic feature of these coordination languages and models
is that they are based on (generative) communication via a shared
data space. The 21 revised full papers presented were selected from
a total of 78 submissions; also included are three invited papers
and 10 posters. All in all, these papers report the state of the
art in this young and active area of research and development.
Revive the art of storytelling using these nine beautifully
illustrated wooden dice to create the most imaginative, funny and
bizarre stories. Construct your own intergalactic adventure tale
with flying saucers, cyborgs, mad scientists and aliens. Form an
army with your space troopers to battle giant insects, dodge black
holes and even gain superpowers like time travel and x-ray vision!
This is the perfect family game that will stimulate the
imaginations of children and adults alike. Ideal for playing by a
log fire.
You Can Find Freedom From Your Past Like Jacob, who in the book of
Genesis tricked his father into giving him his brother's blessing,
we all struggle with our own painful choices. Often our attempts to
fix our missteps result in an even more complicated web of
destruction. Is it possible to escape the unending tangle of guilt
and shame? Is there a better way toward wholeness? In Your New
Identity, Dr. Neil Anderson demonstrates that the two most
important beliefs every Christian should possess is knowing who our
heavenly Father is and who we are in Christ. This second of eight
Victory Series studies will help you understand God's nature and
character, and guide you to lay aside former ways and embrace your
new life as a child of God. This study, with six sessions, can be
used individually or in a group, and includes a leader's guide,
along with illustrations and questions for deeper reflection and
practical applications. God is full of grace and mercy; He makes
right what we in our fallen nature have made wrong. In Your New
Identity, you will discover that, as Jacob learned, an encounter
with the living God will change your life . . . forever.
As the millennium approaches, apocalyptic fervor is sweeping the
nation. Militias, white supremacists, survivalists, and cults have
seized upon the Book of Revelation to trumpet their own fractured
version of the end of the world. Millennium Rage is the only book
that connects the strands of these fringe groups to a tradition
that has underpinnings in American culture and mainstream religion.
It moreover shows that many of these groups have stolen and twisted
apocalyptic religious symbols to fit their own end: gearing up for
Armageddon in this world, not the next. The Oklahoma bombers, the
Sons of Gestapo, the Branch Davidians, and the Unabomber are, as
Philip Lamy astutely demonstrates, extreme examples of burgeoning
strains within society. "Ruby Ridge" and "Waco" have become
rallying cries of a growing number of average Americans who feel
disenfranchised and forgotten. Members of militia movements and
white supremacists, whom Lamy interviewed for this book, have
tapped into their reservoir of discontent and are channeling it for
their own aims. As Lamy points out, rugged individualists and
utopian groups have always dotted the American landscape. What is
alarming, however, is the misuse of the Christian apocalypse to
promote a religion that fans the flames of hate, preaching the
destruction of minorities - including Jews, blacks, and immigrants
- in a whirlwind showdown. Lamy asserts that this new religion,
"Christian Identity," serves as a unifying factor among an array of
extremist groups who call for a battle here on earth against
Satan's supposed forces - minorities allegedly bent on a worldwide
conspiracy to rule the world. Distorting the Bible and other
literature through a prism of hate and fear, they have made some
inroads into the consciousness of America, according to Lamy.
When Charles Whitman sprayed bullets in a brutal killing spree from
the heights of the University of Texas clock tower in 1966, he
single-handedly made history by dashing the security of millions
and changing law enforcement forever. In the wake of this
horrifying event, SWAT - Special Weapons and Tactics - teams were
born. Since that time, such desperate, bloody face-offs with police
have steadily increased, making SWAT an invaluable and necessary
part of law enforcement. Captain Snow, author of the acclaimed
Protecting Your Life, Home, and Property, and a police officer with
over 25 years experience, delivers to the reader the immediacy of
actual SWAT events - including both the notorious and the bizarre.
We get a chilling glimpse into the desperate, twisted mind of the
hostage taker - often hovering precariously between violence and
suicide - and witness the brilliant, life-saving strategies SWAT
commanders put into action to stop them. As Captain Snow
demonstrates, whether intervening during a tension-filled hostage
showdown or serving an arrest warrant to a heavily armed drug lord,
SWAT teams are, in general, uniquely prepared to handle the most
volatile and life-threatening police situations with poise, speed,
and - when necessary - deadly force. From the unnerving events in
Waco to the thousands of successes every year, Snow analyzes what
works and doesn't work in a SWAT team. When the smoke clears, we
find at the heart of this book the inspiring story of professionals
who have dedicated their lives to saving others. Captain Snow gives
us the real story behind the Hollywood image - at once exciting and
sobering - of this relatively new and increasingly vital branch of
law enforcement.

What is the purpose of studying history? How do we reflect on
contemporary life from a historical perspective and can such
reflection help us better understand ourselves, the world around
us, and the God we worship and serve?
In this introductory textbook, accomplished historian John Fea
shows why Christians should study history, how faith is brought to
bear on our understanding of the past, and how studying the past
can help us more effectively love God and others. Deep historical
thinking can relieve us of our narcissism; cultivate humility,
hospitality, and love; and transform our lives more fully into the
image of Jesus Christ.
Howard Beach The Central Park Jogger The Assassination of Alan Berg
Vincent Chin's Murder The Portland Skinhead Slaying Headlines
scream of the latest in a wave of hate crime attacks. Hate
crime-violence aimed at individuals because they are members of a
particular group - were once considered the rare illegal actions of
a small but vocal assortment of extremists who thrived on hating
minorities. No more. Hate crimes have been sweeping the nation - as
well as the world. They are happening in even the most unlikely of
places. Whereas college campuses at one time epitomized the lofty
principles of tolerance, diversity, and idealism, they have now
become the repositories of hatred and division. Hate is hip on
campus, as evidenced not only by the popularity of racist and
misogynistic music, but by the recent rash of attacks against
blacks, women, Asians, Latinos, Jews, and gays. These perceptive
authors step back to reveal how the campus of hate has become a
microcosm for the world at large. This expose by Jack Levin, one of
America's leading sociologists and co-author of Mass Murder:
America's Growing Menace, and Jack McDevitt, America's foremost
authority on hate crimes, explores the spreading venom of prejudice
and bigotry in our society and the world. They proclaim that
political correctness - as in tolerance of diversity - is no longer
deemed fashionable but, rather, obsolete. Organized hate groups
have been taking our alienated youth by storm. But beyond bemoaning
our present crisis, Levin and McDevitt set forth practical
guidelines on how to stem the rising tide of hate. These experts
persuasively argue that as the economic pie shrinks, a new type of
terrorism is leaving a trail of bloodshed and destruction in its
wake. For anyone who is different, the message of this new brand of
terrorism is unmistakable: Either flee or be killed. These
courageous and provocative analysts force us to face a spiraling
problem around us as well as the prejudices within

After his debut with Boosting the Underachiever: How Busy Parents
Can Unlock Their Child's Potential, Dr Victor Cogen, this time,
focuses his unique vision on inspiring the adolescent underachiever
- a normal, healthy teenager who just isn't getting the grades he
or she should. Here, Dr Cogen tackles the intricacies of the
adolescent mind. His innovative approach goes beyond the
stereotypical views of the teenage personality and teaches parents
how they can personally take advantage of their adolescent's
developing cognitive and emotional abilities. Adolescents are
trapped between a world of fantasy created to help them escape from
failure, and a growing need to become part of the real world of
adults. This book explains how to appeal to the developing and
sensitive people these children are becoming and discover the
source of their poor scholastic records.
This journal cover reproduces a gold-tooled and painted binding of
the Brevarium Romanum, or Roman Breviary, the daily prayers
prescribed by the Catholic Church, published by Claude Picques in
Lyons in 1556. The stamped center-piece was a popular design
element in decorative buildings in the 16th century. Gold foil,
iridescent highlights, embossed, gold gilded edges, ribbon
bookmark. Elegant cover treatments enhance the classic art and
designs of these handsome journals. 192 lined pages. Bookbound
hardcover. Acid-free, archival paper.

At the age of thirty-nine, Christian theologian Todd Billings was
diagnosed with a rare form of incurable cancer. In the wake of that
diagnosis, he began grappling with the hard theological questions
we face in the midst of crisis: Why me? Why now? Where is God in
all of this? This eloquently written book shares Billings's
journey, struggle, and reflections on providence, lament, and life
in Christ in light of his illness, moving beyond pat answers toward
hope in God's promises. Theologically robust yet eminently
practical, it engages the open questions, areas of mystery, and
times of disorientation in the Christian life. Billings offers
concrete examples through autobiography, cultural commentary, and
stories from others, showing how our human stories of joy and grief
can be incorporated into the larger biblical story of God's saving
work in Christ.
