The Silicone Breast Implant Story - Communication and Uncertainty (Paperback): Marsha L. Vanderford, David H. Smith The Silicone Breast Implant Story - Communication and Uncertainty (Paperback)
Marsha L. Vanderford, David H. Smith
R948 Discovery Miles 9 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume examines one health issue -- breast implants -- across a series of contexts often thought to be separate -- media coverage, doctor-patient interaction, doctor-doctor professional communication, support group dialogues, public relations campaigns, and more. In so doing, it provides a narrative of how communication shapes the individual perceptions of health, government, and social policy concerning health care.
At the core of the silicone breast implant controversy is the need for people to act amid uncertainty about the health risks involved. This need to weigh action in the midst of uncertain risk characterizes a large number of health issues. The attempts of patients, physicians, drug manufacturers, and others to seek and provide both information and influence makes communication central to these issues. Consequently, the questions explored in this volume will interest a diverse group of readers. This audience includes plastic surgeons in particular, physicians in general, and anyone involved with women's health issues. As the medical profession struggles with its identity amid changes in public attitudes, government regulations, and medical practices, this volume's findings concerning media portrayals of doctors and medical devices become even more important.
Finally, this study reveals how interrelated public information and private decisions are, and how closely media and interpersonal relationships fit. Tracing one medical issue across interpersonal, organizational, public relations, and mediated forums has clearly demonstrated the multiple ways those communication channels overlap and inform one another.

Multi-level Mammaplasty: Anatomical Support And Re-shaping Of The Breast (Hardcover): Amiram Borenstein, Or Friedman Multi-level Mammaplasty: Anatomical Support And Re-shaping Of The Breast (Hardcover)
Amiram Borenstein, Or Friedman
R2,529 Discovery Miles 25 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multi-Level Mammaplasty focuses on the modification of the Lassus technique, adjusted for the use in breasts of all shapes and sizes. This method relies on an upper pedicle relative to the areola and involves a lower central breast reduction, glandular shaping, and suturing. The tradeoff is that in order to ensure a fine-line peri-areolar scar, a vertical extension is added. However, this vertical scar fades over time and is partly obscured by the breast. The submammary horizontal scar, typical of the inverted T incision, is avoided through progressive gathering of the breast tissue during the reconstruction of the breast mound, precisely through trimming of the excess skin for a short, tension-free vertical suture. Moreover, the peri-areolar suture is not disturbed by the vertical suture with unnecessary tension. Still, in the larger breast, the vertical scar may extend to the chest wall. We accept this tradeoff and discuss it with our patients before surgery. In this book, the authors present evidence to demonstrate that the Borenstein multi-level mammaplasty technique is safe and allows the precise reshaping of the breast with long-lasting results. Its advantages largely compensate for the addition of the vertical limb to the peri-areolar scar.

Cosmetic Bootcamp Primer - Comprehensive Aesthetic Management (Hardcover): Kenneth Beer, Mary P. Lupo, Vic A. Narurkar Cosmetic Bootcamp Primer - Comprehensive Aesthetic Management (Hardcover)
Kenneth Beer, Mary P. Lupo, Vic A. Narurkar
R6,475 Discovery Miles 64 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Minimally invasive aesthetic procedures continue to be popular with patients, so many medical practitioners who have not previously specialized in the field or practiced very widely are either turning to this area or expanding the range of treatments they currently offer. These practitioners require a basic primer to get them up to speed on the details of treatments, as well as expert tips on the idiosyncratic demands involved in running an aesthetic practice. The Cosmetic Bootcamp meetings began as a way for colleagues in dermatology, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and otorhinolaryngology to teach each other in a collegial environment. The meetings are designed to provide physicians in these specialties a forum to exchange ideas, explore new technologies and techniques, and discuss ways to improve patient care. The focus is on advancing the science and outcomes using a multidisciplinary approach. Drawn from these meetings, Cosmetic Bootcamp Primer: Comprehensive Aesthetic Management presents a succinct but comprehensive textbook from a team with extensive experience in training newcomers to the field of aesthetic practice. The first part of the text details how a practice needs to be run for optimum impact and efficiency. Both new and seasoned practitioners will find much advice in this section for improving their daily office operation to help them compete effectively. The second section reviews the essentials of the clinical treatments. Each of the core aesthetic specialties are included, and chapters contain what the editors consider essential information as well as a few "pearls." The book is supplemented with downloadable resources to enable users to experience the flavor of the actual Cosmetic Bootcamp meetings. Future versions of this text will include internet-based interactions to foster further discussions. For those interested in a more direct interaction, please visit Cosmetic Boot Camp to see dates for upcoming meetings.

Beauty and Body Dysmorphic Disorder - A Clinician's Guide (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Neelam A. Vashi Beauty and Body Dysmorphic Disorder - A Clinician's Guide (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Neelam A. Vashi
R3,522 Discovery Miles 35 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the decades, research has demonstrated that in categories of life deemed to be important, beautiful people achieve more desirable outcomes, are judged more favorably, and receive preferential treatment. An understanding of the historical aspects, science, and implications of what the human mind finds aesthetically pleasing is quintessential for dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and others who practice aesthetic medicine as the importance of beauty in today's society is what brings patients into clinics. While an element of dissatisfaction with one's appearance is commonplace, clinicians should remain vigilant for individuals who seek cosmetic procedures to quell excessive body image concerns that are out of proportion to objective physical findings. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a disorder of self-perception; it is the impairing preoccupation with a nonexistent or minimal flaw in appearance. According to recent statistics, BDD occurs in 0.7-2.4% of the general population; however, multiple studies have suggested an incidence of 6-16% in patients seeking aesthetic medical treatments. Moreover, a vast majority will at some point seek dermatologic treatment and cosmetic surgery. Such patients are unlikely to be satisfied with corrective procedures, and only 15% of dermatologists surveyed thought that they could successfully treat BDD. Therefore, Beauty and Body Dysmor phic Disorder aims to assist dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and other aesthetic providers in recognizing key characteristics as well as providing treatment strategies to help in caring for those with BDD.
