The Welfare Economics of Alternative Renewable Resource Strategies - Forested Wetlands and Agricultural Production (Hardcover):... The Welfare Economics of Alternative Renewable Resource Strategies - Forested Wetlands and Agricultural Production (Hardcover)
Robert N. Stavins
R2,232 Discovery Miles 22 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This study, originally published in 1990, seeks to address several important policy questions associated with the ongoing depletion of forested wetlands. First, in the context of Environmental Impact Statements, should the estimated areas of impact of Federal flood-control and drainage projects on wetlands be limited to (minimal) construction impacts, or should they include impacts which occur when such projects cause private landowners to drain and clear their wetland holdings? A second crucial question is whether wetland depletion and conversion to agricultural cropland has been excessive. This title will be of interest to students of Environmental Economics and Policy.

Climate ChangeImpact on Coastal Habitation - Impact on Coastal Habitation (Hardcover): Doeke Eisma Climate ChangeImpact on Coastal Habitation - Impact on Coastal Habitation (Hardcover)
Doeke Eisma
R6,737 Discovery Miles 67 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Temperature and precipitation increase and decrease because of natural causes. However, anthropogenic changes, such as an enhanced greenhouse effect, may result in alterations in the regional climate and in relative sea level. Serious changes in climate and sea level-with adverse effects particularly along low-lying coasts-would affect millions of people. Climate Change takes an in-depth, worldwide look at coastal habitation with respect to these natural and anthropogenic changes.
No universally applicable coastal model can be used to describe climatic changes. This unique book provides individual discussions of beaches and barrier islands, cliffs, deltas, tidal flats and wetlands, reefs, and atolls. The impact of climatic change on coastal ecology and agriculture is investigated, and human responses to the effects of climatic change along the world's coasts are included.

The Geography of Survival - Ecology in the Post-Soviet Era (Paperback, New Ed): Ze'ev Wolfson The Geography of Survival - Ecology in the Post-Soviet Era (Paperback, New Ed)
Ze'ev Wolfson
R1,486 Discovery Miles 14 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 1989 a Soviet environmental expert writer under the pseudonym Boris Komarov startled the world. His book "The Destruction of Nature in the Soviet Union", was both a chilling description of the environmental devastation in the Soviet Union and an indictment of the official policy and public apathy that allows it to be perpetuated. Today Boris Komarov writes freely under his own name - Ze'ev Wolfson. But the ecological crisis he documents has only become more severe, more widespread, more deadly. In "The Geography of Survival" Wolfson speaks out in unmistakable terms about the world's choice to embrace the cause of our collective survival or to let desertisation, pollution, disaster, famine, epidemic, and war work their own solution.

The Hazardous Waste Q & A An In-depth Guide to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and The Hazardous Materials Transportation Act Revised Edition Travis P. Wagner The "Answer Book" for all your compliance questions... How much of your company's waste is considered "hazardous" under current federal regulations? If the carrier you hire to remove waste is cited for a violation, can you also be held liable? Does your company's disposal program meet new EPA and DOT requirements? Now you can find the authoritative answers to these and hundreds of other critical waste management problems--in minutes--with the revised edition of this practical, quick-reference guide to RCRA and HMTA compliance. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act have spawned an enormous and complex body of regulations and requirements--among the most complicated laws in the land. Unfortunately, while ensuring compliance with these regulations is a top priority for both the EPA and DOT. helping businesses understand and comply with the regulations is not. Written by a former technical compliance specialist for EPA. The Hazardous Waste Q&A helps you make sure your waste management practices fully meet these tough regulations--and will help you reduce your liability, too. The Hazardous Waste Q&A simplifies hazardous waste management under RCRA and HMTA by presenting these highly technical and often difficult to interpret regulations in an easy-to-understand, easy-to-use question-and-answer format. This approach lets you go straight to the help you need without digging through pages and pages of dense, technical detail. You'll find EPA-approved procedures and solutionsfor virtually every practical aspect of hazardous waste management:

  • Identification and Classification Guidelines
  • Requirements for Medium-and Large-Quantity Generators
  • Transportation under RCRA and HMTA
  • Recycling, Storage, Treatment, and Disposal
  • Ground Water Monitoring
  • Closure and Post-Closure
  • Financial Requirements
  • Operating and Post-Closure Permits
  • Corrective Action
  • State Regulations and Enforcement
Questions were developed from thousands of actual inquiries received at EPA and from the author's experience consulting on hazardous wastes for private industry. In preparing the answers and guidelines, Mr. Wagner went beyond the regulations themselves to gather additional facts and insights from source documents not readily available to the layman, including OSWER Directives, Regulatory Interpretation Letters, Program Implementation Guidance, EPA policy memos and guidance manuals, DOT guidance manuals, Federal Register preambles, and RCRA/Superfund Hotline Monthly Reports. Thus, users will find Q&A not just convenient but authoritative and in depth## For everyone concerned with hazardous## managers, health and safety managers, attor## Q&A is an unrivalled productivity resource. Japan's International Fisheries Policy - Law, Diplomacy and Politics Governing Resource Security (Paperback): Roger D Smith Japan's International Fisheries Policy - Law, Diplomacy and Politics Governing Resource Security (Paperback)
Roger D Smith
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Few nations rely upon the ocean as much as Japan for livelihood, culture and transport. The seas have long played a vital role for the Japanese, helping to support the economic and social life of a nation that possesses few resources and little arable land, and sustain a population that has nearly tripled in the last century. Fish are a distinctive feature of the Japanese diet, constituting nearly half of all animal protein consumed - the highest rate in the world. The industry itself has provided an impetus for coastal community growth and national economic development over the past century, while fisheries have worked their way into Japanese culture and customs, serving as a dominant symbol in traditional arts and folklore. This book explores the overarching rationale that motivated Japanese international fisheries policy throughout the post-war period until today, highlighting the importance of international fisheries to Japan and the stature this resource has occupied as a national interest. It provides a comparative view of Japanese foreign policy at various ocean conferences, treaty negotiations, bilateral diplomatic initiatives and other maritime relations that constitute ocean policy over half a century, and investigates the domestic constituents of national policy. Roger Smith argues that the rationale for international fisheries policy may be best viewed as deriving from Japan's unique defence strategy for its national interests: comprehensive security. Encompassing non-military elements and most importantly defence of economic interests, Japan's international fisheries policy provides an interesting case study of how comprehensive security is conceptualised and carried out. Taking a broad view of Japan's international fisheries policies from 1945 to the present, this book highlights the key trends in policy motives and means throughout the post-war period. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese studies, international and environmental law, resource management and international relations, as well as to policy makers working in the field.

Blueprint 3 - Measuring Sustainable Development (Paperback): David Pearce Blueprint 3 - Measuring Sustainable Development (Paperback)
David Pearce
R854 Discovery Miles 8 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Blueprint 3 is the direct sequel to the ground-breaking Blueprint for a Green Economy. Taking the argument much further, David Pearce and his colleagues show how progress towards sustainability in the UK can be measured. They set out the conditions for sustainable development and the measures of economic progress these imply, before looking in detail at all the main areas of economic activity to which the measures are applicable. The result is a wide-ranging and cogent critique of existing policies which also offers new options - options which will require far-reaching reform of this country's existing political and institutional structure. Blueprint 3 will be a touchstone for future discussions of all the major policy areas.

Water for Poor Women - Quest for an Alternative Paradigm (Hardcover): Sayeed Iftekhar Ahmed Water for Poor Women - Quest for an Alternative Paradigm (Hardcover)
Sayeed Iftekhar Ahmed
R2,472 Discovery Miles 24 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The majority of the poor people in South and Southeast Asia do not have sufficient access to safe potable water sources. Various studies demonstrate that poor women have less access than poor men, especially in the developing world. Due to the gendered division of labor, the role of women, especially those who are poor, is vital in collecting, distributing, and safeguarding water. Current studies on water governance do not focus on poor women's ability to access potable water sources through their involvement in the distribution process. Water for Poor Women: Quest for an Alternative Paradigm, by Sayeed Iftekhar Ahmed, develops an alternative governance paradigm to ensure poor women's water security through their participation in the governance process. This study assesses the effects of governance on water distribution and participation from the perspective of poor women. Ahmed examines the state-led and Public Private Participation (PPP) governance systems located in two developing metropolises: Dhaka, Bangladesh and Manila, the Philippines, respectively. This crucial investigation reveals that poor women have very limited ability to access water under the state-led governance system in Dhaka, but comparatively more ability to access water resources under the PPP governance in Manila. However, women are excluded from the decision-making process under both types of governance systems. Water for Poor Women proposes an alternative system of governance for ensuring women's participation in the governance processes to promote the goal of more equitable distribution of urban water.

Heritage - Conservation, Interpretation and Enterprise (Hardcover): J D Fladmark Heritage - Conservation, Interpretation and Enterprise (Hardcover)
J D Fladmark
R1,527 R1,281 Discovery Miles 12 810 Save R246 (16%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume deals with policy, methods and techniques for the stewardship of our land and our cultural assets. The focus is on interpretation and presentation of heritage themes, and the papers should be of interest to those concerned with school and university curricula, those working in museums and galleries, and those in charge of parks and tourist enterprises. Individual contributions celebrate achievements and debate issues relating to the natural and built environment, the future of green tourism, planning and interpretation in museums, parks and private estates. The authors include: Professor David Lowenthal on cultural landscapes; Charles McKean on architecture; David Macmillan on the arts; John Purser on music; Elisabeth Luard on cooking; the Earl of Glasgow on the opening of a family estate to the public; and Gordon Baxter on the heritage of one of Scotland's great enterprise stories in the food industry. The main theme of the book is that we do not always take enough pride in our heritage which is often undervalued and neglected. Positive action is required to raise awareness, to foster respect for our inheritance and to generate a new kind of enterprise that will not endanger the heritage resources on which we depend for enjoyment and jobs.

Zoos and Animal Rights (Hardcover): Stephen St. C Bostock Zoos and Animal Rights (Hardcover)
Stephen St. C Bostock
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Zoos and animal rights seem utterly opposed to each other. In this controversial and timely book, Stephen Bostock argues that they can develop a more harmonious relationship. He examines the diverse ethical and technical issues involved, including human cruelty, human domination over animals, the well-being of wild animals outside their natural habitat, and the nature of wild and domestic animals. In his analysis, Bostock draws attention to the areas which give rise to misconceptions.
This book explores the long history of zoos, as well as current philosophical debates, to argue for a conservational view of their role in the modern world. Anyone concerned with humanity's relationship with other animals and the natural world will find this to be thought-provoking and rewarding reading.

The Economics of Sustainable Urban Water Management: the Case of Beijing - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Hardcover): Xiao Liang The Economics of Sustainable Urban Water Management: the Case of Beijing - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Hardcover)
Xiao Liang
R5,826 Discovery Miles 58 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Rapid population growth, limited water availability, climate variability and environmental pollution together cause a significant challenge to provide sufficient water to urban residents in a sustainable and effective way. Advanced water treatment technology can contribute to the solution of problems physically, but it may not ensure sustainable operation of water systems. The obstacles to sustainable water supply and services often are from non-technical problems such as low cost recovery, lack of sound pricing systems and sustainable financing for increasing service coverage. The financial and economic factors could be a large barrier to the operation of water systems. Through the case of Beijing, the book demonstrates how to use economics in managing urban water systems. The research employs the methods of cost benefit analysis, linear programming and rough set analysis. An integrated and quantitative analysis of the economic, environmental and social effects of water systems considering the viewpoints of different stakeholders is carried out, which is rare in the existing literature. The research shows that economics contributes to identifying the non-technical problems in water systems and can help decision makers to make choices that are consistent with the long-term well being of the community.

Climate Lyricism (Paperback): Min Hyoung Song Climate Lyricism (Paperback)

In Climate Lyricism Min Hyoung Song articulates a climate change-centered reading practice that foregrounds how climate is present in most literature. Song shows how literature, poetry, and essays by Tommy Pico, Solmaz Sharif, Frank O'Hara, Ilya Kaminsky, Claudia Rankine, Kazuo Ishiguro, Teju Cole, Richard Powers, and others help us to better grapple with our everyday encounters with climate change and its disastrous effects, which are inextricably linked to the legacies of racism, colonialism, and extraction. These works employ what Song calls climate lyricism-a mode of address in which a first-person "I" speaks to a "you" about how climate change thoroughly shapes daily life. The relationship between "I" and "you" in this lyricism, Song contends, affects the ways readers comprehend the world, fostering a model of shared agency from which it can become possible to collectively and urgently respond to the catastrophe of our rapidly changing climate. In this way, climate lyricism helps to ameliorate the sense of being overwhelmed and feeling unable to do anything to combat climate change.

Giants of the Monsoon Forest - Living and Working with Elephants (Paperback): Jacob Shell Giants of the Monsoon Forest - Living and Working with Elephants (Paperback)
Jacob Shell
R454 Discovery Miles 4 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For more than a thousand years, people in the rainforests of India and Burma have worked with elephants to log these otherwise impassable forests and move people and goods (often illicitly) under cover of the forest canopy. Jacob Shell takes us deep into this strange elephant country to explore the lives of these extraordinarily intelligent creatures and their relationship with humans. Visiting tiny logging villages and forest camps, Shell describes fascinating characters, both elephant and human, and interweaves his account with the incredible history of this centuries-long alliance. Giants of the Monsoon Forest offers new perspective on animal intelligence and shows us how Asia's secret forest culture might offer a way to save elephants and protect our wilderness.

Just Conservation - Biodiversity, Wellbeing and Sustainability (Hardcover): Adrian Martin Just Conservation - Biodiversity, Wellbeing and Sustainability (Hardcover)
Adrian Martin
R4,476 Discovery Miles 44 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Loss of biodiversity is one of the great environmental challenges facing humanity but unfortunately efforts to reduce the rate of loss have so far failed. At the same time, these efforts have too often resulted in unjust social outcomes in which people living in or near to areas designated for conservation lose access to their territories and resources. In this book the author argues that our approach to biodiversity conservation needs to be more strongly informed by a concern for and understanding of social justice issues. Injustice can be a driver of biodiversity loss and a barrier to efforts at preservation. Conversely, the pursuit of social justice can be a strong motivation to find solutions to environmental problems. The book therefore argues that the pursuit of socially just conservation is not only intrinsically the right thing to do, but will also be instrumental in bringing about greater success. The argument for a more socially just conservation is initially developed conceptually, drawing upon ideas of environmental justice that incorporate concerns for distribution, procedure and recognition. It is then applied to a range of approaches to conservation including benefit sharing arrangements, integrated conservation and development projects and market-based approaches such as sustainable timber certification and payments for ecosystem services schemes. Case studies are drawn from the author's research in Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Laos, Bolivia, China and India.

Biodiversity Conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean - Prioritizing Policies (Paperback): Allen Blackman, Rebecca... Biodiversity Conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean - Prioritizing Policies (Paperback)
Allen Blackman, Rebecca Epanchin-Niell, Juha Siikamaki, Daniel Velez-Lopez
R1,552 Discovery Miles 15 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region is exceptionally biodiverse. It contains about half of the world's remaining tropical forests, nearly one-fifth of its coastal habitats, and some of its most productive agricultural and marine areas. But agriculture, fishing and other human activities linked to rapid population and economic growth increasingly threaten that biodiversity. Moreover, poverty, weak regulatory capacity, and limited political will hamper conservation. Given this dilemma, it is critically important to design conservation strategies on the basis of the best available information about both biodiversity and the track records of the various policies that have been used to protect it. This rigorously researched book has three key aims. It describes the status of biodiversity in LAC, the main threats to this biodiversity, and the drivers of these threats. It identifies the main policies being used to conserve biodiversity and assesses their effectiveness and potential for further implementation. It proposes five specific lines of practical action for conserving LAC biodiversity, based on: green agriculture; strengthening terrestrial protected areas and co-management; improving environmental governance; strengthening coastal and marine resource management; and improving biodiversity data and policy evaluation.

Faiths in Green - Religion, Environmental Change, and Environmental Concern in the United States (Hardcover): Lukas Szrot Faiths in Green - Religion, Environmental Change, and Environmental Concern in the United States (Hardcover)
Lukas Szrot
R2,177 Discovery Miles 21 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Faiths in Green addresses the complex and fraught relationship between religious identity and environmental concern in the United States, particularly how that relationship has changed over time. Examining the effects of religious upbringing, belonging, and disaffiliation on environmental concern across multiple religious groups over several decades, the author shows where, when, how, and why religious groups and their memberships have responded constructively to environmental change over time. The author also visits the effects of gender, social class, race, and politics on both religion and environmental concern in the U.S. Faiths in Green offers an in-depth and accessible guide to understanding the at-times incongruous relationship between religious beliefs and motivations, as well as ways to follow cultural shifts that both drive and are driven by religious persons and institutions. In examining how religious and cultural factors are linked to environmental concern over time, Faiths in Green demonstrates the importance of morality and worldviews in confronting global hazards of unprecedented scale.

The Green Economy in the Global South (Hardcover): Stefano Ponte, Daniel Brockington The Green Economy in the Global South (Hardcover)
Stefano Ponte, Daniel Brockington
R4,472 Discovery Miles 44 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The idea and practice of the 'green economy' is gaining momentum, coinciding with financial instability and continued economic woe in the Global North, but generally more positive economic circumstances in the Global South. 'Green economic initiatives' in the Global South are multiplying, and include carbon payments, ecotourism, community-based wildlife management, sustainability certification initiatives, and offsets by mining companies exploiting new resources. These initiatives are reallocating resources, redefining inequalities and redistributing the fortune and misfortune of participants of the green economy and those excluded from it. They have also led to resistance - locally, nationally, and transnationally - and to demands for alternatives to market-driven instruments and solutions, which are generally gaining strength and coherence. The articles included in this volume bring together a multi-disciplinary team of scholars from North and South to provide nuanced analyses of green economy experiences in the Global South - analysing the opportunities they provide, but also the redistributions they entail and the kinds of resistances they face. The ultimate aim of the collection is to provide a critical, but balanced, overview of the emerging green economy in the Global South and point the way to possible adjustments, alternatives or radical resistance, depending on different situations. This book was originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

Named by Forbes as one of the 12 Best Books About Birds and Birding in 2017 After stumbling upon a book of photographs depicting extinct animals, B.J. Hollars became fascinated by creatures that are no longer with us: specifically, extinct North American birds. How, he wondered, could we preserve so beautifully on film what we've failed to preserve in life? And so begins his yearlong journey to find out, one that leads him from bogs to art museums, from archives to Christmas Bird Counts, until he at last comes as close to extinct birds as he ever will during a behind-the-scenes visit at the Chicago Field Museum. Heartbroken by the birds we've lost, Hollars takes refuge in those that remain. Armed with binoculars, a field guide, and knowledgeable friends, he begins his transition from budding birder to environmentally conscious citizen, a first step on a longer journey toward understanding the true tragedy of a bird's song silenced forever. Told with charm and wit, Flock Together is a remarkable memoir that shows how "knowing" the natural world-even just a small part-illuminates what it means to be a global citizen and how only by embracing our ecological responsibilities do we ever become fully human. A moving elegy to birds we've lost, Hollars's exploration of what we can learn from extinct species will resonate in the minds of readers long beyond the final page.

Resilience and Collapse in African Savannahs - Causes and consequences of environmental change in east Africa (Hardcover):... Resilience and Collapse in African Savannahs - Causes and consequences of environmental change in east Africa (Hardcover)
Michael Bollig, David M. Anderson
R4,481 Discovery Miles 44 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book assesses the causes and consequences of environmental change in East Africa, asking whether local African communities are sufficiently resilient to cope with the ecological and social challenges that confront them. It focuses on the savannahs of the Baringo-Bogoria basin, and the surrounding highlands of Kenya's northern Rift Valley that form the social-ecological system of the specialised cattle pastoralists and niche agricultural farmers who occupy these semi-arid lands. Historical studies of resilience spanning the past two centuries are linked with analysis of current environmental challenges, and the ecological, social, economic and political responses mounted by local communities. The authors question whether the most recent challenges confronting the peoples of eastern Africa's savannahs - intensified conflicts, mounting poverty driven by demographic pressures, and dramatic ecological changes brought by invasive species - might soon led to a collapse in essential elements of the specialised cattle pastoralism that dominates the region, requiring a re-orientation of the social-ecological system. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Eastern African Studies.
