Originally published in 1947, this book was written to provide an introductory survey of the developments in electromagnetic waves. Although the propagation of electromagnetic waves in metal tubes - wave-guides - had been studied for over fifty years prior to the publication of this book, the subject was primarily of theoretical interest. The treatment in this book reflects the movement away from the theoretical to a more practical interest in waves during the war, with the development of the first micro-wave radar equipment in 1940-1. The first six chapters are based on courses on microwave techniques, which were given during the war at the Radar School of the Telecommunications Research Establishment, whilst chapter seven is a mathematical treatment of the subject. This book will be of great value to scholars of the history of physics and electromagnetics.
This work takes advantage of high-resolution silicon stencil masks to build air-stable complementary OTFTs using a low-temperature fabrication process. Plastic electronics based on organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) pave the way for cheap, flexible and large-area products. Over the past few years, OTFTs have undergone remarkable advances in terms of reliability, performance and scale of integration. Many factors contribute to the allure of this technology; the masks exhibit excellent stiffness and stability, thus allowing OTFTs with submicrometer channel lengths and superb device uniformity to be patterned. Furthermore, the OTFTs employ an ultra-thin gate dielectric that provides a sufficiently high capacitance to enable the transistors to operate at voltages as low as 3 V. The critical challenges in this development are the subtle mechanisms that govern the properties of aggressively scaled OTFTs. These mechanisms, dictated by device physics, are well described and implemented into circuit-design tools to ensure adequate simulation accuracy.

The book introduces an original and effective method for the analysis of peak-to-peak output current ripple amplitude in three-phase two-level inverters. It shows that the method can be extended to both multiphase inverters, with particular emphasis on five-phase and seven-phase inverters, and multilevel ones, with particular emphasis on three-level inverters, and provides, therefore, a comparison among different number of output phases and voltage levels. The work reported on here represents the first detailed analysis of the peak-to-peak output current ripple. It makes an important step toward future developments in the field of high-power generation, and in grid-connected and motor-load systems.

Harmonically modulated luminescence combines the advantages of highly sensitive luminescence metrology with an immediate dynamic access to carrier lifetime in semiconductors at a minimum of required a priori information. The present work covers theoretical, conceptual, and experimental advances of the harmonically modulated luminescence technique. Theoretical constraints of dynamic carrier lifetime techniques are rigorously elaborated, including the proof of their differential nature and their characteristics at nonuniform spatial distributions of recombination rate. The pathway toward a unified, reliable, and versatile harmonically modulated carrier lifetime metrology is delineated - covering the entire solar cell production chain from bare ingots to finished solar cells. Accurate access to miscellaneous relevant recombination and transport properties via harmonically modulated luminescence is demonstrated and experimentally validated, embracing injection-dependent carrier lifetimes at extremely low injection conditions, a spatially resolved carrier lifetime calibration of luminescence images, and accurate approaches to both net dopant concentration and minority carrier mobility.
