How can researchers study magic without destroying its mystery?
Drawing on a collaborative project between the playwright Poppy
Corbett, the poet Anna Kisby Compton, and the historian William G.
Pooley, this Element presents thirteen tools for creative-academic
research into magic, illustrated through case studies from France
(1790-1940) and examples from creative outputs: write to discover;
borrow forms; use the whole page; play with footnotes; erase the
sources; write short; accumulate fragments; re-enact; improvise;
use dialogue; change perspective; make methods of metaphors; use
props. These tools are ways to 'untell' the dominant narratives
that shape stereotypes of the 'witch' which frame belief in
witchcraft as ignorant and outdated. Writing differently suggests
ways to think and feel differently, to stay with the magic, rather
than explaining it away. The Element includes practical creative
exercises to try as well as research materials from French
newspaper and trial sources from the period.
This compilation of the mystical writings of Hadewijch of Antwerp is best described, in Andrew Harvey's words, as a "heroic song" of love. The book presents an honest picture of love from every angle, stripped of sentimentality, not disguising the high price love demands if it is to be taken or given seriously.
In a world torn by division, indifference and chaos, to read Love is Everything is to be awakened to the full potential and dignity of being human, and to be changed. Hadewijch of Antwerp was one of Christianity's greatest Christian mystics, a Beguine who lived in the 13th century.
Andrew Harvey is a world-renowned poet, novelist, translator, mystical scholar, spiritual teacher, and the founder of the Institute for Sacred Activism. He saw in Hadewijch's writings a promise and hope for a broken world and felt called to make it accessible to more people by presenting it in daily-reading format.

Ritual deposition is not an activity that many people in the
Western world would consider themselves participants of. The
enigmatic beliefs and magical thinking that led to the deposition
of swords in watery places and votive statuettes in temples, for
example, may feel irrelevant to the modern day. However, it could
be argued that ritual deposition is a more widespread feature now
than in the past, with folk assemblages - from roadside memorials
and love-lock bridges, to wishing fountains and coin-trees -
emerging prolifically worldwide. Despite these assemblages being as
much the result of ritual activity as historically deposited
objects, they are rarely given the same academic attention or
heritage status. As well as exploring the nature of ritual
deposition in the contemporary West, and the beliefs and symbolisms
behind various assemblages, this Element explores the heritage of
the modern-day deposit, promoting a renegotiation of the pejorative
term 'ritual litter'.
Dion Fortune's basic esoteric textbook on the psychology of love
and relationships explains the universal factors governing the
interaction between masculine and feminine, from the "lowest" to
the "highest" level of the Seven Planes. With uncanny intuition and
hands-on psychological experience, Fortune clearly states the
principles of polarity underlying all relationships between men and
women.
She explains that sex is a function, not an ideal, with many
factors that produce or hinder harmony. The feminine is "positive"
on the Spiritual and Emotional Planes, while the male tends to be
"positive" on the Mental and Physical Planes. In a harmonious
union, these aspects complement each other so the relationship
stays balanced. Where these aspects are unrecognized or denied free
expression, disharmony often results. Needless to say, the physical
expression through sex will also suffer, since attitudes derived
from the "higher levels" control or inhibit the "lower physical
aspect". These principles remain as true today as when this book
was first published. Also included is Fortune's teaching on some of
the esoteric principles behind abstinence and asceticism,
contraception and abortion.
Agrippa combined classical Neoplatonic and Hermetic philosophy with
elements of Jewish Kabbalah and Christianity to form a systematic
exposition of occult knowledge. His explanations of planetary
rulerships, enchantments, sorceries, divination, and dream
interpretation offer a host of amazing possibilities: improved
health, prolonged life, increased wealth, and enhanced foresight.

The History of the Devil (1900) is a philosophical study by Paul
Carus. A lifelong Monist, Carus sought to apply a scientific
analysis to the principles of humanity's religions. Credited with
bridging the gap between Eastern and Western beliefs, Carus
believed that the dualism rampant in the West could be replaced in
order to establish a more equitable world where difference and
diversity would be accepted and nurtured, rather than suppressed.
"This world of ours is a world of opposites. There is light and
shade, there is heat and cold, there is good and evil, there is God
and the Devil. The dualistic conception of nature has been a
necessary phase in the evolution in human thought." Recognizing the
need for dualism in the history of humanity, Carus sought to
promote the principles of Monism in the West, believing it could
lead to a universal worldview capable of uniting East and West. A
positivist and pantheist, Carus believed that by pursuing "in
religion the same path that science travels, [...] the narrowness
of sectarianism [would] develop into a broad cosmical religion
which shall be as wide and truly catholic as is science itself." To
lay the groundwork for this "cosmical religion," he investigates
the figure of the Devil and the historical evolution of the concept
of evil, which he saw as predating belief in goodness and God. With
a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript,
this edition of Paul Carus' The History of the Devil is a classic
of philosophy reimagined for modern readers.
