The Esri Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2 - Spatial Measurements and Statistics (Paperback, Second Edition): Andy Mitchell,... The Esri Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2 - Spatial Measurements and Statistics (Paperback, Second Edition)
Andy Mitchell, Lauren Scott Griffin
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Learn how to get better answers in map analysis when you use spatial measurements and statistics. Spatial measurements and statistics give you a powerful way to analyze geospatial data, but you don't need to understand complex mathematical theories to apply statistical tools and get meaningful results in your projects. The Esri Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2: Spatial Measurements and Statistics, second edition, builds on Volume 1 by taking you to the next step of GIS analysis. Learn to answer such questions as, how are features distributed? What is the pattern created by a set of features? Where can clusters be found? This book introduces readers to basic statistical concepts and some of the most common spatial statistics tasks: measuring distributions, identifying patterns and clusters, and analyzing relationships. Updated with the latest and most useful software tools and revised explanations, each chapter in The Esri Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2 is organized to answer basic questions about the topic. Explore how spatial statistical tools can be applied in a range of disciplines, from public health to habitat conservation. Learn how to quantify patterns beyond visualizing them in maps. Examine spatial clusters through an updated chapter on identifying clusters. Use The Esri Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2, second edition, to understand the statistical methods and tools that can move your work past mapping and visualization to more quantitative statistical assessment.

The Global Digital Divides - Explaining Change (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): James B. Pick, Avijit Sarkar The Global Digital Divides - Explaining Change (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
James B. Pick, Avijit Sarkar
R3,030 Discovery Miles 30 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyzes extensive data on the world's rapidly changing and growing access to, use and geographies of information and communications technologies. It studies not only the spatial differences in technology usage worldwide, but also examines digital differences in the major world nations of China, India, the United States and Japan at the state and provincial levels. At the global level, factors such as education, innovation, judicial independence and investment are important to explaining differences in the adoption and use of technology. The country studies corroborate consistent determinants for technology usage for education, urban location, economic prosperity, and infrastructure, but also reveal unique determinants, such as social capital in the United States and India, exports in China and working age population and patents in Japan. Spatial patterns are revealed that indicate clusters of high and low technology use for various nations around the world, the countries of Africa and for individual states/provinces within nations. Based on theory, novel findings and phenomena that have remained largely unreported, the book considers the future of the worldwide digital divides, the policy role of governments and the challenges of leadership.

Land Cover and Land Use Change on Islands - Social & Ecological Threats to Sustainability (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Stephen J.... Land Cover and Land Use Change on Islands - Social & Ecological Threats to Sustainability (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Stephen J. Walsh, Diego Riveros-Iregui, Javier Arce-Nazario, Philip H. Page
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization is not a new phenomenon, but it is posing new challenges to humans and natural ecosystems in the 21st century. From climate change to increasingly mobile human populations to the global economy, the relationship between humans and their environment is being modified in ways that will have long-term impacts on ecological health, biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services, population vulnerability, and sustainability. These changes and challenges are perhaps nowhere more evident than in island ecosystems. Buffeted by rising ocean temperatures, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, climate change, tourism, population migration, invasive species, and resource limitations, islands represent both the greatest vulnerability to globalization and also the greatest scientific opportunity to study the significance of global changes on ecosystem processes, human-environment interactions, conservation, environmental policy, and island sustainability. In this book, we study islands through the lens of Land Cover/Land Use Change (LCLUC) and the multi-scale and multi-thematic drivers of change. In addition to assessing the key processes that shape and re-shape island ecosystems and their land cover/land use changes, the book highlights measurement and assessment methods to characterize patterns and trajectories of change and models to examine the social-ecological drivers of change on islands. For instance, chapters report on the results of a meta-analysis to examine trends in published literature on islands, a satellite image time-series to track changes in urbanization, social surveys to support household analyses, field sampling to represent the state of resources and their limitations on islands, and dynamic systems models to link socio-economic data to LCLUC patterns. The authors report on a diversity of islands, conditions, and circumstances that affect LCLUC patterns and processes, often informed through perspectives rooted, for instance, in conservation, demography, ecology, economics, geography, policy, and sociology.

Jacek Zaucha, Kira Gee
R860 R804 Discovery Miles 8 040 Save R56 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book is the first comprehensive overview of maritime or marine spatial planning. Countries across the globe are beginning to implement maritime spatial plans; however the authors of this collection have identified several key questions that are emerging from this growing body of MSP experience. How can maritime spatial planning deal with a complex and dynamic environment such as the sea? How can MSP be embedded in multiple levels of governance across regional and national borders - and how far does the environment benefit from this new approach? This book actively engages with the problems encapsulated in these questions, and explores possible solutions. Situated at the intersection between theory and practice, the volume draws together several strands of interdisciplinary research, reflecting on the history of MSP as well as examining current practice and looking towards the future. The authors and contributors examine MSP from disciplines as diverse as geography, urban planning, political science, natural science, sociology and education; reflecting the growing critical engagement with MSP in many academic fields. This innovative and pioneering volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of maritime spatial planning, as well as planners and practitioners.

Microwave Remote Sensing Tools in Environmental Science (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Costas A. Varotsos, Vladimir F. Krapivin Microwave Remote Sensing Tools in Environmental Science (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Costas A. Varotsos, Vladimir F. Krapivin
R4,979 Discovery Miles 49 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book gives new insight to the study of the global environmental changes using the ecoinformatics and microwave remote sensing tools together with the adaptive-evolutionary technology of geoinformation monitoring. The main advantage of this book consists in the accumulation of the interdisciplinary scientific knowledge for the parameterization of the global biogeochemical cycles and other environmental processes in the context of globalization and sustainable development. In this regard, the crucial global problems of the dynamics of the climate-nature-society system have been considered and the key problems of ensuring its sustainable development have been addressed. An analysis of the present trend in changing ecological systems has been discussed, including different types of forest ecosystems and ocean aquatories. The emphasis has been given to the accomplishment of the global geoinformation monitoring, which could provide a reliable control of the environmental processes development with reliable prognostic estimates of the consequences of human activities. A new approach to the numerical modelling of the climate-nature-society system has been presented and demonstrative results have been given about the modelling of the dynamics of this system s characteristics, in cases of realization of some scenarios of the anthropogenic impacts to the biogeochemical cycles, the land ecosystems and oceans. Methods and algorithms for the big data manipulation and processing in the remote sensing environmental monitoring systems have been described.
