W. Nester
R1,452 Discovery Miles 14 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Legitimacy, Power, and Inequalities in the Multistakeholder Internet Governance - Analyzing IANA Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Legitimacy, Power, and Inequalities in the Multistakeholder Internet Governance - Analyzing IANA Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Nicola Palladino, Mauro Santaniello
R1,589 Discovery Miles 15 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to develop a critical understanding of multistakeholder governance in Internet Governance through an in-depth analysis of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) transition, the process through which the U.S. Government transferred its traditional oversight role over the Domain Name System to the global Internet community. In the last few decades, multistakeholderism has become the dominant discourse in the Internet Governance field, mainly because of its promise to provide democratic legitimacy for transnational policymaking, although empirical research has highlighted disappointing performances of multistakeholder arrangements. This book contributes to the debate on multistakeholder governance by analyzing the IANA Transition process's normative legitimacy, broken down in the dimensions of input legitimacy (inclusiveness, balanced representation, and representativeness), throughput legitimacy (procedural and discursive quality), and output legitimacy (outcome and institutional effectiveness). Findings warn about the risk that multistakeholderism could result in a misleading rhetoric legitimizing existing power asymmetries.

China's Challenge to US Supremacy - Economic Superpower versus Rising Star (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): John G. Glenn China's Challenge to US Supremacy - Economic Superpower versus Rising Star (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
John G. Glenn
R3,288 Discovery Miles 32 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyzes China's development in the wider context of the global trade, investment, security, knowledge and production regimes established by the United States. It argues that, although China has thus far been able to enjoy rapid growth within this global architecture, it will have to deal with a more challenging external environment as other states react to its rise. More specifically, it is facing growing pressure to realign its currency, a greater number of trade investment and intellectual property disputes, a more hostile security environment, and exclusionary regional trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic trade agreements. It is also being confronted by an array of internal issues, from an ageing population and weaknesses in the high tech sector, to over-reliance on foreign companies for exports, non-performing loans and a burgeoning state debt. This, in turn, has led an increasing number of firms to relocate to other countries. For the time being, the author concludes, China's global ambitions and challenge to US supremacy will have to be scaled back. This insightful work will appeal to students and scholars of China's politics, economy and development.

The Decolonial Turn in Media Studies in Africa and the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Last Moyo The Decolonial Turn in Media Studies in Africa and the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Last Moyo
R2,807 Discovery Miles 28 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book develops a nuanced decolonial critique that calls for the decolonization of media and communication studies in Africa and the Global South. Last Moyo argues that the academic project in African Media Studies and other non-Western regions continues to be shaped by Western modernity's histories of imperialism, colonialism, and the ideologies of Eurocentrism and neoliberalism. While Africa and the Global South dismantled the physical empire of colonialism after independence, the metaphysical empire of epistemic and academic colonialism is still intact and entrenched in the postcolonial university's academic programmes like media and communication studies. To address these problems, Moyo argues for the development of a Southern theory that is not only premised on the decolonization imperative, but also informed by the cultures, geographies, and histories of the Global South. The author recasts media studies within a radical cultural and epistemic turn that locates future projects of theory building within a decolonial multiculturalism that is informed by trans-cultural and trans- epistemic dialogue between Southern and Northern epistemologies.

Liberal States and the Freedom of Movement - Selective Borders, Unequal Mobility (Hardcover, New): Steffen Mau, H. Brabandt, L.... Liberal States and the Freedom of Movement - Selective Borders, Unequal Mobility (Hardcover, New)
Steffen Mau, H. Brabandt, L. Laube, Christof Roos
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

State borders regulate cross-border mobility and determine peoples' chances to travel, work, and study across the globe. This book looks at how global mobility is defined by borders in 2011 in comparison to the 1970s. The authors trace the transformation of OECD-state borders in recent decades and show how borders have become ever more selective.

Migration, Globalization, and the State (Hardcover): R. Brickner Migration, Globalization, and the State (Hardcover)
R. Brickner
R1,976 R1,786 Discovery Miles 17 860 Save R190 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Given the sheer number of migrants, it is easy to take migration for granted as a characteristic of a globalized world, where people, along with money and information, move easily across and within borders. In reality, migration is a complex phenomenon shaped by political, economic, cultural, and social factors. The contributors explore the dynamic intersections of the processes of economic globalization, policies and interests among state actors, and the experiences and agency of migrants themselves. Drawing evidence from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, they illustrate that even within the common framework of economic globalization, the ways in which the interests of state actors and the agency of migrants intersects continuously shapes and reshapes both home and destination societies.

Marek Rewizorski, Karina Jedrzejowska, Anna Wr obel
R2,788 Discovery Miles 27 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In light of new global challenges for international cooperation and coordination, such as the revival of protectionism, surge of populism, or energy-related issues, this volume highlights possible scenarios for the future of Global Economic Governance (GEG). The contributing authors analyze the substance of GEG as a normative framework for resolving collective action issues and promoting cross-border co-ordination and co-operation in the provision or exchange of goods, money, services and technical expertise in the world economy. Furthermore, the book examines drivers of fundamental shifts in global economic steering and covers topics such as power and authority shifts in the global governance architecture, technological and energy-related challenges, and the role of the G20 and BRICS in shaping global economic governance. "This book provides a very timely and nuanced account of the challenges facing the established global order." Andrew F. Cooper (Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo) "This valuable collection from a new generation of innovative scholars of global economic governance offers insights from a broad range of theoretical approaches to the central policy issues of the day" John Kirton (Director of the Global Governance Program, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto)

Third Millennium Capitalism - Convergence of Economic, Energy, and Environmental Forces (Hardcover): Wyatt Rogers Third Millennium Capitalism - Convergence of Economic, Energy, and Environmental Forces (Hardcover)
Wyatt Rogers
R2,712 Discovery Miles 27 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Third Millennium presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges to capitalism as a global economic system. Technological advances, governmental policies, energy supply, ecological concerns, and a burgeoning world population are among the issues to be addressed by private enterprise in holistic and humanitarian ways. No longer can these issues be treated in isolation inasmuch as they are becoming increasingly interdependent.

As Rogers shows, in industrialized nations, with their aging and stabilizing populations, the marketplace and the working environment are changing, requiring new approaches to work and leisure. In sharp contrast, populations in the Third World are growing rapidly and represent vast potential new markets for the private sector. Simultaneously, enormous social, health, and political problems abound in many Third World countries that may be addressed by private sector and governmental initiatives. Economic expansion in Third World nations will require great expansion of electric and other energy systems, resulting in increased environmental degradation unless major preventive measures are taken. Continued growth of energy systems in industrialized nations will require the introduction of increased pollution controls in the near future. A definitive transition from dependence on fossil fuels to nonpolluting renewable energy sources should be a major global priority. Environmental protection efforts, previously confined to major industrialized nations, should become a high priority issue on a global basis. Global climate change and other air pollution, desertification, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and water pollution are extending into formerly pristine areas, forcing international approaches to mitigation. A challenging assessment for business officers, policy analysts, and economists involved with corporate strategy and economic development.

Egalitarianism and Global Justice - From a Relational Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Kevin K. W. Ip Egalitarianism and Global Justice - From a Relational Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Kevin K. W. Ip
R3,261 Discovery Miles 32 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, Kevin Ip articulates and defends an egalitarian conception of global distributive justice grounded on the value of equality as a normative ideal of how human relations should be conducted. Arguing that relationships of equality, rather than those characterized by domination or exploitation, are a requirement for a just system, Ip spells out the real-world implications of this approach. Ip defends the ideal of equality against the diverse objections which have been brought to bear, and the responsibilities we bear in our aspirations towards global justice.

Nationalism, Globalization, and Africa (Hardcover): M. Amoah Nationalism, Globalization, and Africa (Hardcover)
M. Amoah
R1,476 Discovery Miles 14 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nationalism, especially supranationalism is the bane of global governance, and globalization. Whereas globalization seeks to unify the globe to function to advantage, supranationalisms operate to frustrate the coherence and achievement of this aim. This book delves into the theories of nationalism, the contours of supranational activity within global politics, international political economy, and global trade alliances vis-a-vis Africa. The book also identifies a list of African countries with identical issues, serial political difficulties, or time bombs ticking, and examines the performance of their political economies and new security challenges, using global indicators.

Ekim Arbatli, Dina Rosenberg
R3,924 Discovery Miles 39 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyzes social movements across a range of countries in the non-Western world: Bosnia, Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, Palestine, Russia, Syria, Turkey and Ukraine in the period 2008 to 2016. The individual case studies investigate how political and social goals are framed nationally and globally, and the types of mobilization strategies used to pursue them. The studies also assess how, in the age of transnationalism, the idea of participatory democracy produces new collective-action frames and mass-mobilization strategies. The book challenges the view that most social movements unequivocally seek to achieve higher levels of democratization. Instead, the authors argue that protesters across different movements advocate more involved forms of citizen participation, since passive representation through liberal democratic institutions fails to address mass grievances and demands for accountability in many countries.

Memory in a Global Age - Discourses, Practices and Trajectories (Hardcover): A. Assmann, S. Conrad Memory in a Global Age - Discourses, Practices and Trajectories (Hardcover)
A. Assmann, S. Conrad
R2,551 Discovery Miles 25 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the past decade, the field of memory has been dramatically reconfigured. Global conditions have powerfully impacted on memory debates, and at the same time, claims to memory are negotiated globally. This is a fundamental shift, as until recently, the dynamics of memory production unfolded primarily within the bounds of the nation-state; coming to terms with the past was largely a national project. Under the impact of processes of globalization, this has changed fundamentally. Today it has become impossible to understand the trajectories of memory outside a global frame of reference. This book offers an innovative inroad into the various problematics of memory in a global age. It presents analytical categories to chart the terrain, and it supplies richly documented case studies that illustrate the complexities of contemporary ways of appropriating the past. Written from different cultural positions and from different disciplinary backgrounds, the collection of essays emphasizes the positionality of memory production as it is negotiated locally and globally.

The Work of Art in a Digital Age: Art, Technology and Globalisation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Melissa Langdon The Work of Art in a Digital Age: Art, Technology and Globalisation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Melissa Langdon
R3,248 Discovery Miles 32 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores digital artists articulations of globalization. Digital artworks from around the world are examined in terms of how they both express and simulate globalization s impacts through immersive, participatory and interactive technologies. The author highlights some of the problems with macro and categorical approaches to the study of globalization and presents new ways of seeing the phenomenon as a series of processes and flows that are individually experienced and expressed. Instead of providing a macro analysis of large-scale political and economic processes, the book offers imaginative new ways of knowing and understanding globalization as a series of micro affects. Digital art is explored in terms of how it re-centers articulations of globalization around individual experiences and offers new ways of accessing a complex topic often expressed in general and intangible terms. The Work of Art in a Digital Age: Art, Technology and Globalization is analytic and accessible, with material that is of interest to a range of researchers from different disciplines. Students studying digital art, film, globalization, cultural studies or digital media trends will also find the content fascinating."

Global Networking, Communication and Culture: Conflict or Convergence? - Spread of ICT, Internet Governance, Superorganism... Global Networking, Communication and Culture: Conflict or Convergence? - Spread of ICT, Internet Governance, Superorganism Humanity and Global Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Halit UEnver
R4,431 R3,428 Discovery Miles 34 280 Save R1,003 (23%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, this book offers detailed insights into the empirical relationships between overall social key figures of states and cultures in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT) (digital divide/inequality), the economy, education and religion. Its goal is to bridge the 'cultural gap' between computer scientists, engineers, economists, social and political scientists by providing a mutual understanding of the essential challenges posed and opportunities offered by a global information and knowledge society. In a sense, the historically unprecedented technical advances in the field of ICT are shaping humanity at different levels and forming a hybrid (intelligent) human-technology system, a so-called global superorganism. The main innovation is the combined study of digitization and globalization in the context of growing social inequalities, collapse, and sustainable development, and how a convergence towards a kind of global culture could take place. Accordingly, the book discusses the spread of ICT, Internet Governance, the balance between the central concentration of power and the extent of decentralized power distribution, the inclusion or exclusion of people and states in global communication processes, and the capacity for global empathy or culture.

Strategies to Achieve a Binding International Agreement on Regulating Cartels - Overcoming Doha Standstill (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Strategies to Achieve a Binding International Agreement on Regulating Cartels - Overcoming Doha Standstill (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
John Sanghyun Lee

This book addresses the lack of binding multi-lateral international agreement on cartels, through analysis of trials and failures. It also suggests strategic approaches to overcome current standstills. In addition, the book contrasts international agreement on cartels with inter-governmental commodity agreement which has been developed separately through international law. Through this project, the author puts forth that successful international law on cartels needs to reflect the interests and arguments of developing countries.

Managing Globalization in the Asian Century - Essays in Honour of Prema-Chandra Athukorala (Hardcover): Hal Hill, Jayant Menon Managing Globalization in the Asian Century - Essays in Honour of Prema-Chandra Athukorala (Hardcover)
Hal Hill, Jayant Menon
R2,051 R1,609 Discovery Miles 16 090 Save R442 (22%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The global centre of gravity continues to shift to the Asia-Pacific, the most dynamic region in the world. These economies have generally grown faster for longer periods of time than any other major region in world history. Their embrace of globalization has been a central feature, and driver, of their dynamism. The management of Asia-Pacific economic integration and globalization is crucial not only for the countries themselves but also for the state of the global economy, including importantly latecomer developing economies who look to the region for analytical and development policy lessons. Twenty-seven leading international authorities in the field, drawn from nine countries, provide a comprehensive examination of the causes, consequences and challenges of globalization, in a volume that celebrates the distinguished career of Professor Prema-Chandra Athukorala. Among the major issues examined are the region's distinctive approach to trade liberalization, the effects of economic growth on poverty reduction and the labour market, the special challenges of by-passed regions, the role of ideas in influencing policy making, the modalities of connecting to global production networks, and the importance of remittances in economic development. Several country case studies provide in-depth analyses of development processes and outcomes. These include episodes in economic development, the challenges faced by transition economies, the macroeconomics of adjusting to slower growth and rising debt in advanced economies, and the so-called middle-income trap phenomenon.

Nationalism and Multiple Modernities - Europe and Beyond (Hardcover): Atsuko Ichijo Nationalism and Multiple Modernities - Europe and Beyond (Hardcover)
Atsuko Ichijo
R1,944 R1,726 Discovery Miles 17 260 Save R218 (11%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nationalism and Multiple Modernities: Europe and Beyond explores new horizons in the study of nationalism by examining the modernity of nationalism with the theory of multiple modernities. The theory of multiple modernities has triggered a renewed debate on modernity by proposing a non-Western centric approach to the study of modernity. The volume applies the concept of multiple modernities to the study of nationalism and proposes a reformulation of nationalism as a form of cultural programmes that reflects enhanced human reflexivity. Three cases - Anglo-British, Finnish and Japanese - are investigated to examine the ways in which nationalism embodies an exercise of human agency. The volume commends the human-agency centred approach to nationalism as a way of avoiding Western-centricity in a social scientific investigation. Based on its examination of the three cases the volume suggests new directions in research into the relationship between nationalism and religion, non-Western cases of nationalism and 'Europe' as a cosmopolitan orientation.

Globalization and Education - Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse (Hardcover): Jeffrey S Brooks, Anthony H.... Globalization and Education - Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse (Hardcover)
Jeffrey S Brooks, Anthony H. Normore, Melanie C. Brooks, Nicola Sum
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globalization and Education: Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse explores the various ways educators' work is influenced by globalization. This book presents topics and contexts traditionally marginalized in mainstream education research discourses and shows how local and global education issues are intersecting and shaping the ways in which ideas and practices are shared around the world. Each chapter presents an educational issue in an understudied international context, such as Saudi Arabia, Guyana, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, and Nepal. Topics range from how the knowledge industry shapes education in schools to the impact of globalization on school leadership, teaching, and learning. We invite scholars and practitioners to join us in the world schoolhouse, a place where discussion about educational understanding and improvement is not bounded by national borders, school systems or language. This book will both challenge and expand thinking about the complexities of education during a time of globalization and change.

The Fragmentation of Aid - Concepts, Measurements and Implications for Development Cooperation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016):... The Fragmentation of Aid - Concepts, Measurements and Implications for Development Cooperation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Stephan Klingebiel; Timo Casjen Mahn, Mario Negre; Edited by Timo Mahn, Mario Negre
R4,360 Discovery Miles 43 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited volume provides an assessment of an increasingly fragmented aid system. Development cooperation is fundamentally changing its character in the wake of global economic and political transformations and an ongoing debate about what constitutes, and how best to achieve, global development. This also has important implications for the setup of the aid architecture. The increasing number of donors and other actors as well as goals and instruments has created an environment that is increasingly difficult to manoeuvre. Critics describe today's aid architecture as 'fragmented': inefficient, overly complex and rigid in adapting to the dynamic landscape of international cooperation. By analysing the actions of donors and new development actors, this book gives important insights into how and why the aid architecture has moved in this direction. The contributors also discuss the associated costs, but also potential benefits of a diverse aid system, and provide some concrete options for the way forward.

Forecasting, Warning and Responding to Transnational Risks (Hardcover, New): Chiara De Franco, C. Meyer Forecasting, Warning and Responding to Transnational Risks (Hardcover, New)
Chiara De Franco, C. Meyer
R1,494 Discovery Miles 14 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Assembling a high profile group of scholars and practitioners, this book investigates the interplay of forecasting; warnings about, and responses to, known and unknown transnational risks. It challenges conventional accounts of 'failures' of warning and preventive policy in both the academic literature and public debate.

The Diffusion of Power in Global Governance - International Political Economy meets Foucault (Hardcover): S. Guzzini, I. Neumann The Diffusion of Power in Global Governance - International Political Economy meets Foucault (Hardcover)
S. Guzzini, I. Neumann
R1,476 Discovery Miles 14 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The study of global governance has often led separate lives within the respective camps of International Political Economy and Foucauldian Studies. Despite vast differences in these approaches, Guzzini and Neumann's study recognises that ongoing changes in global governance go far beyond a proliferation of steering techniques and has a systems-changing potential. As politics becomes increasingly global in character and the number of agents attempting to govern grows, this in-depth range of case studies suggests the emergence of a global polity.

Constructing a Global Polity - Theory, Discourse and Governance (Hardcover): Olaf Corry Constructing a Global Polity - Theory, Discourse and Governance (Hardcover)
Olaf Corry
R1,827 Discovery Miles 18 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is a 'global polity' and can it be squared with the continued strength of nation-states?
This book argues that our current understanding of globalization makes it impossible to grasp some crucial changes in world politics. Drawing innovatively on both Foucault and Waltz Constructing a Global Polity reframes the debate about global politics by redefining the term 'polity' as a new model of political structure. Unlike hierarchy and anarchy, polity draws attention to how new objects of governance such as the global economy or climate affect the structure of world politics.
Through this new lens the author examines the construction of a global polity in the controversy that followed the dramatic 'anti-globalization' protests at global elite gatherings. The findings challenge the standard typology of positions in the globalization debate and suggest that, even while states remain central, the logic of world politics may be shifting in more subtle ways.
