This brief guide was prepared for those inquiring about how to enter into Hieroglyphic studies on their own at home or in study groups. First of all you should know that there are a few institutions around the world which teach how to read the Hieroglyphic text but due to the nature of the study there are perhaps only a handful of people who can read fluently. It is possible for anyone with average intelligence to achieve a high level of proficiency in reading inscriptions on temples and artifacts; however, reading extensive texts is another issue entirely. However, this introduction will give you entry into those texts if assisted by dictionaries and other aids. Most Egyptologists have a basic knowledge and keep dictionaries and notes handy when it comes to dealing with more difficult texts. Medtu Neter or the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic language has been considered as a "Dead Language." However, dead languages have always been studied by individuals who for the most part have taught themselves through various means. This book will discuss those means and how to use them most efficiently.
After a multi-decade career of stimulating readers to appreciate
and laugh at the glories and oddities of our English language,
beloved language maven Richard Lederer has collected his very best
and most popular pieces in "Word Wizard." In this career-capping
anthology the reader will find essays that enlighten, inspire, and
tickle the funny bone.
By the author of the Atlantic Monthly's highly popular column "Word
Court," the most engaging grammar guide of our time, with all the
authority of "Strunk" "and White" and all the fun of "Woe Is I."
This handbook is a companion to the widely used and standard text, "A Grammar for Biblical Hebrew" (revised edition), by C. L. Seow. It has been thoroughly and successfully field-tested in various settings for studying biblical Hebrew. For each exercise in the Grammar, this volume refreshes the student on lessons already learned, reinforces explanations and terms used in the lesson, explains concepts not yet covered, provides an annotated answer key, offers practical helps and tips, and cites relevant information in the standard dictionaries and reference grammars. The "Handbook" helps students make the most of the introductory grammar, in the classroom or for self-guided study. The reference to the major research grammars and lexicons will enable the student and instructor to take learning and teaching to a more advanced level in studying and translating Biblical Hebrew. The authors are doctoral students of C. L. Seow at Princeton Theological Seminary. Jennifer S. Green is an instructor at Columbia Theological Seminary, G. Brooke Lester is an instructor at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, and Joseph F. Scrivner is an instructor at Samford University.

A Spanish Grammar Workbook is designed to make the acquisition of the Spanish language a challenging, sensible and enjoyable task. Structured around the main elements of contemporary Spanish grammar, the workbook complements Blackwell's A Comprehensive Spanish Grammar by Jacques de Bruyne (adapted, with additional material by Christopher J. Pountain). Together, the two books form a complete educational package or core text that is suitable for most levels of formal education. In addition, A Spanish Grammar Workbook can be used as an independent learning aid. The 500 grammar exercises vary from simple tests and puzzles to multiple-choice tests and realistic dialogues that contextualize Spanish grammar in everyday speech. In addition, communication exercises, at the end of most chapters, function as prompts to the oral practice of the grammar in representative contexts. By these means, language learners may come to understand grammatical functions naturally by putting theory into practice. The difficulty level of each exercise is indicated and the book includes an extensive answer key. A Spanish Grammar Workbook is a vital resource for helping students attain, maintain and improve their fluency.
Originally published as two distinct collections, "Depraved and
Insulting English" brings to light the language's most offensive
and obscene words--words that have fallen out of today's lexicon
but will no doubt delight, amuse, and in some cases prove
surprisingly useful. Who hasn't searched for the right word to
describe a colleague's maschalephidrosis (runaway armpit
perspiration) or a boss's pleonexia (insane greed)? And what better
way is there to insult the scombroid landlord (resembling a
mackerel) or that tumbrel of a brother-in-law (a person who is
drunk to the point of vomiting) than by calling him by his rightful
name?

Modern Swahili Grammar is an important contribution to the study of Swahili grammar from pedagogical and lingustic perspectives, and thus relevant to both students of Swahili and scholars of linguistics and sociolinguistics. At a descriptive level, the book covers phonology, morphology and syntax. The following areas of Swahili grammar are also covered in detail: affixes, derivation, inflection, parts of speech, relatives, tenses, demonstratives of reference, pronominalisation, phrases, clauses and sentences. For years Richard Lederer has entertained fans of the English
language with his keen insights, commonsense advice, and witty
patter. Now Lederer and Richard Dowis take readers on another
journey through our most "wiggy" of languages. How many times have
we all heard the word "viable" used in company meetings? The
authors show us how "viable" was at one time extracted from medical
books, where it is actually defined as "capable of living," and
placed into our consumer marketplace. Then there is confusion
between "lay" and "lie," which the authors clear up once and for
all. These and dozens fo delightful examples make this book pure
pleasure for language buffs, writers, and teachers.

This root-based dictionary of the Ilocano language is the most comprehensive dictionary produced of Ilocano (Iloko), the lingua franca of Northern Luzon, and historically the native language of the majority of Filipino immigrants to the United States. The body of the dictionary includes entries for roots and affixes with illustrative sentences, idioms, common derivations, and scientific names (when applicable). Ilocano synonyms are also furnished when appropriate. Derived words that undergo morphological fusion are listed as separate entries to facilitate lexical searches. There is also an affix cross-reference list to help the beginning student recognize root words. Unlike most dictionaries of Philippine languages, it has an extensive English to Ilocano section, information on the pre-Hispanic syllabary, and language maps of the Philippines showing where the largest concentration of Ilocano speakers reside.
This is designed as an especially user-friendly volume. Thus it employs largely traditional nomenclature to describe grammatical phenomena. It also deals with the relatively simple noun before taking up the verbal system. Numerous examples and exercises are also provided, all culled from the Hebrew Bible itself, and the lesson vocabularies feature words which occur over 170 times in the Masoretic text. This book is designed to induct the student into the use of a printed Hebrew Bible, a Biblical Hebrew lexicon, and an advanced grammar, as well as a concise overview of how Hebrew fits within the Semitic languages. Verbal paradigms and a subject index are also included.>
This monograph studies research conducted for the purpose of investigating the growth of recognition vocabulary during the early and middle elementary school years in relation to the development of morphological knowledge. The children were tested on a selection of main entry words from a recent unabridged nonhistorical dictionary by means of definition, sentence, and multiple-choice questions. The focus of the present study, however, was on the contribution made by different morphologically defined word types and by knowledge of morphology and word formation to total recognition vocabulary at different age and grade levels. The findings suggest that lexical development can be characterized in terms of increasing morphological complexity. Further, it was found that the proportion of known complex words for which there was evidence that children figured them out by analyzing their morphological structure increased with age and grade. |
