The first scholarly book on Thomas Vaughan (1621-1666) draws from
recent studies in Western esotericism to place his famously
difficult writings in their proper context. It shows that they
develop themes from a distinctively Rosicrucian synthesis of
alchemy, magic, and Christian cabala. Vaughan introduced
Rosicrucian documents to English readers and placed them in older
philosophical contexts during the breakdown of censorship that
followed the English Revolution against the old order in politics
and religion. Willard's book will appeal to students of early
modern ideas about religion, science, and society as they were seen
by an intelligent and eloquent outsider.
This is the first book in English providing a wide range of
Byzantine legal sources. In six chapters, this book explains and
illustrates Byzantine law through a selection of fundamental
Byzantine legal sources, beginning with the sources before the time
of Justinian, and extending up to AD 1453. For all sources English
translations are provided next to the original Greek (and Latin)
text. In some cases, tables or other features are included that
help further elucidate the source and illustrate its nature. The
volume offers a clear yet detailed primer to Byzantine law, its
sources, and its significance.
The chapter about idol worship in Maqrizi's Universal History
includes excerpts from books that are no longer extant. They make
it harder to argue against the import or even the very existence of
pre-Islamic idol worship.
This book investigates the relationship between justification by
faith and final judgment according to works as found in Paul's
second epistle to the Corinthians within a Protestant theological
framework. Benjamin M. Dally first demonstrates the diversity and
breadth of mainstream Protestant soteriology and eschatology
beginning at the time of the Reformation by examining the
confessional standards of its four primary ecclesial/theological
streams: Lutheran, Reformed, Anabaptist, and Anglican. The
soteriological structure of each is assessed (i.e., how each
construes the relationship between justification and final
judgment), with particular attention given to how each speaks of
the place of good works at the final judgment. This initial
examination outlines the theological boundaries within which the
exegesis of Second Corinthians can legitimately proceed, and
illuminates language and conceptual matrices that will be drawn
upon throughout the remainder of thebook. Then, drawing upon the
narrative logic of Paul's Early Jewish thought-world, Dally
examines the text of Second Corinthians to discern its own
soteriological framework, paying particular attention to both the
meaning and rhetorical function of the "judgment according to
works" motif as it is utilized throughout the letter. The book
concludes by offering a Protestant synthesis of the relationship
between justification and final judgment according to works in
Second Corinthians, giving an explanation of the role of works at
the final judgment that arguably alleviates a number of tensions
often perceived in other readings devoted to this key aspect of
Pauline exegesis and theology. Dally ultimately argues a three-fold
thesis: (1) For the believer one's earthly conduct, taken as a
whole, is best spoken of in the language of inferior/secondary
"cause" and/or "basis" as far as its import at the last judgment.
(2) One's earthly conduct, again taken as a whole, is
soteriologically necessary (not solely, but secondarily
nonetheless) and not simply of importance for the bestowal of
non-soteriological, eschatological rewards. (3) There are crucial
resources from within mainstream Protestantism to authorize such
ways of speaking and to simultaneously affirm these contentions in
conjunction with a robust, strictly forensic/imputational,
"traditional" Protestant understanding of the doctrine of
justification by faith alone.

Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has a complicated past regarding
this issue, and determining what exactly women's roles in home,
church, and society should be, or even what these roles should be
called, has been a contentious subject. In A Marginal Majority:
Women, Gender, and a Reimagining of Southern Baptists, editors
Elizabeth H. Flowers and Karen K. Seat and eight other contributors
examine the SBC's complex history regarding women and how that
history reshapes our understanding of the denomination and its
contemporary debates. This comprehensive volume starts with women
as SBC fundraisers, moves to the ways they served Southern Baptist
missions, and considers their struggles to find a place at Southern
Baptist seminaries as well as their launching of "teaching" or
"women's" ministries. Along the way, it introduces new
personalities, offers fresh considerations of familiar figures, and
examines the power dynamics of race and class in a denomination
that dominated the South and grew into a national behemoth.
Additionally, the essay collection provides insights into why the
SBC has often politically aligned with the right. Not only did the
denomination become increasingly oriented toward authoritarianism
as it clamped down on evangelical feminism, but, as several
contributors reveal, even as Southern Baptist women sought agency,
they often took it from others. Read together, the chapters strike
a somber tone, challenging any triumphal historiography of the
past. By providing a history of contentious issues from the
nineteenth century to the present day, A Marginal Majority provides
invaluable context for the recurrent struggles women have faced
within the United States' largest Protestant denomination.
Moreover, it points to new directions in the study of American
denominational life and culture.
