Veld is a natural resource vital to our survival on earth. About 80% of our beautiful country consists of veld. Most of this area is used for livestock and game ranching as well as for biodiversity conservation and recreation. Good veld management is needed to prevent land degradation and to ensure sustainable food production and biodiversity conservation. But good veld management relies on a good knowledge of ecological principles and veld management practices, something many land users did not have the privilege to acquire. This book aims to provide the necessary knowledge to assist land users to effectively manage the land under their care, a huge responsibility indeed.

This edition of the standard textbook on its subject has been
revised by Robert Churchill's biographer. Macdonald Hastings,
himself well-known in the shooting field (and other fields as
well), has incorporated comments on matters which, since
Churchill's Game Shooting as first published in 1955, required
further enlargement or modification. He has also brought the entire
work completely up-to-date. Macdonald Hastings, who collaborated
with the author in the writing of the original edition, was Robert
Churchill's own choice to revise the text and this new edition of
Churchill's drill book, as the great gunmaker and coach himself
liked to describe it, may be regarded as contemporarily definitive.
None who read the first edition will want to miss this second one,
in which every point of controversy and prejudice has been
underlined with an editorial note to assist the shooting man in
improving his own performance. To those who are still unfamiliar
with Churchill's method of teaching game-shooting, it is important
to add that this books is aimed to help not merely the experienced
shot who wonders why he is missing, but also the novice handling a
gun for the first time. It contains complete and always practical
advice on all forms of shot-gun work for everybody. Those who make
good use of this manual will not only be welcome guests in any
company but quickly pay the cost of the book out of the saving they
make on wasted cartridges.

Wild Spaces, Open Seasons traces the theme of hunting and fishing
in American art from the early nineteenth century through World War
II. Describing a remarkable group of American paintings and
sculpture, the contributors reveal the pervasiveness of the
subjects and the fascinating contexts from which they emerged. In
one important example after another, the authors demonstrate that
representations of hunting and fishing did more than illustrate
subsistence activities or diverting pastimes. The portrayal of
American hunters and fishers also spoke to American ambitions and
priorities. In his introduction, noted outdoorsman and author
Stephen J. Bodio surveys the book's major artists, who range from
society painters to naturalists and modernists. Margaret C. Adler
then explores how hunting and fishing imagery in American art
reflects traditional myths, some rooted in classicism, others in
the American appetite for tall tales. Kory W. Rogers, in his
discussion of works that valorize the dangers hunters faced
pursuing their prey, shows how American artists constructed new
rituals at a time when the United States was rapidly transforming
from a frontier society into a modern urban nation. Shirley
Reece-Hughes looks at depictions of families, pairs, and parties of
hunters and fishers and how social bonding reinvigorated American
society at a time of social, political, and cultural change.
Finally, Adam M. Thomas considers themes of exploration and hunting
as integral to conveying the individualism that was a staple of
westward expansion. In their depictions of the hunt or the catch,
American artists connected a dynamic and developing nation to its
past and its future. Through the examination of major works of art,
Wild Spaces, Open Seasons brings to light an often-overlooked theme
in American painting and sculpture.

This duck hunter knows how to tell a story From a young boy
shivering in the rain on his first hunt, all the way to suffering
the loss of lifelong hunting pals, Don E. Webster embraces almost
60 years of waterfowling. Penned with a style and flair that brings
to mind outdoor legends such as Corey Ford, Robert Ruark, and Ed
Zern, this collection of duck hunting memories brims with sly
humor, salty wit, and poignant reflection. "Bury Me In My Waders"
will charm and captivate you while tickling your funny bone at the
same time. "My wife claims to have figured out why I hunt ducks.
According to her, there's something in my chemistry that drives me
to seek masochistic pleasure by exposing myself to bad weather
occurring in cold, wet, muddy places. She is of the opinion that I
should be studied by behavioral scientists." "Like myself, my
lifelong pals who are still above ground have slowed way down. We
suffer from hardening of the arteries, arthritis, rheumatism,
lumbago, and gout, not to mention nicotine withdrawal and a
leathery liver. Trinidad cigars and Napoleon Cognac are now only
fond memories, having been replaced by Watkins Liniment and green,
vitamin smoothies."
