Paolo Chiocchetti, Frederic Allemand
R4,508 Discovery Miles 45 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Starting in the 1980s, competitive pressures and the ideology of competitiveness have shaken and transformed traditional models of development, public policy, and governance in Europe. This edited book carries out a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and innovative analysis of the relationship between competitiveness and solidarity in the contemporary European Union. It offers an original contribution to the scholarly debates on the current developments and challenges of welfare states, social and economic policies, and forms of governance in the European Union. Bringing together an international team of cutting-edge scholars in the social sciences and the humanities, Competitiveness and Solidarity in the European Union sheds light on the conceptual richness and policy relevance of these relationships, pointing to important avenues to make the European Union more economically successful and socially fairer. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union studies and, more broadly, of EU Law, Public Policy, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Contemporary History.

Language Management and Its Impact - The Policies and Practices of Confucius Institutes (Hardcover): Linda Mingfang Li Language Management and Its Impact - The Policies and Practices of Confucius Institutes (Hardcover)
Linda Mingfang Li
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive account of language management and planning at Confucius Institutes in the UK, implementing an ethnographic approach grounded in language management theory. As a global language promotion organization, Confucius Institutes have previously been discussed in the literature with respect to socio-political issues, but this volume will shed particular light on their role in shaping and informing Chinese language policy, at both the institutional and individual classroom level. The book focuses specifically on Confucius Institutes in the UK, demonstrating how language teaching practice in these organizations is informed and shaped not only by organizational paradigms but local language needs and institutional attitudes of host institutions. In turn, Li highlights these organizations' unique position in a multilingual region such as the UK can offer new insights into language management by illustrating their roles as platforms for both individuals and institutions to become involved in the making and implementation of language policy. This volume will be of particular interest to students and researchers in language policy and planning, language education, applied linguistics, and Chinese linguistics.

Women and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Hardcover): Rebecca Adami Women and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Hardcover)
Rebecca Adami
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Who were the non-Western women delegates who took part in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) from 1945-1948? Which member states did these women represent, and in what ways did they push for a more inclusive language than "the rights of Man" in the texts? This book provides a gendered historical narrative of human rights from the San Francisco Conference in 1945 to the final vote of the UDHR in the United Nations General Assembly in December 1948. It highlights the contributions by Latin American feminist delegates, and the prominent non-Western female representatives from new member states of the UN.

The Road to European Monetary Union (Hardcover): Andre Szasz The Road to European Monetary Union (Hardcover)
Andre Szasz
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explains the political background and describes the decision-making leading to European Monetary Union, as seen by a former central banker who participated in the process during more than two decades. Political rather than economic considerations were decisive in establishing EMU. French-German relations in particular form a thread that runs through the book, notably French efforts to replace German monetary domination by a form of decision-making France can influence. Thus, the issues involved are issues of power, though often presented in technical terms of economics.

Reflective Approaches to European Governance (Hardcover): Knud Erik Jorgensen Reflective Approaches to European Governance (Hardcover)
Knud Erik Jorgensen
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Celebrating the existence of contending theories of European integration, the book begins with a critical exploration of the concepts and theories used to examine this unique policy, presenting theoretically informed, empirical studies of the origin of the key themes of European governance, territorial politics, domestic-European linkages and the EU's foreign policy affairs.

Capital, Systems, and Objects - The Foundation and Future of Organizations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Richard Thomas Watson Capital, Systems, and Objects - The Foundation and Future of Organizations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Richard Thomas Watson
R2,105 Discovery Miles 21 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a set of integrated frameworks-capital, systems, and objects-that transcend managerial or technology hype by focusing on the long-term fundamentals that sustain organizational success. Many organizations are currently addressing two important transformational issues: ecological sustainability and digitization. Sustainability is a goal, an end, and digitization is a process, a means to achieve a goal. This book introduces a flexible model that can be applied to current and future organizational challenges, including sustainability and digitization, because the fundamentals are constant. This book is designed to serve two purposes for the readers: first, to present three conceptual foundations for designing and operating organizations (capital, systems, and objects in Part I); and second, to provide a reference source for implementing these ideas in an organization (Parts II and III). The Part I of the book, chapters 1 through 7, sets forth the conceptual foundations. The chapters mix concepts and practical examples to give a new way of thinking about the setting in which one may work many days each year. The Part II provides details and associated examples of every one of the thirty-six forms of capital conversion. It also illustrates how the five foundational systems support capital conversion in a variety of ways. Finally, the Part III is about measuring capital and systems. The book will resonate with practitioners and students of strategy, leadership, and organizational design. It is critical reading for leaders, industry experts, and general readers who want to understand how over thousands of years the capital creation system has developed today's world and will fashion its future.

The European Union Diplomatic Service - Ideas, Preferences and Identities (Paperback): Caterina Carta The European Union Diplomatic Service - Ideas, Preferences and Identities (Paperback)
Caterina Carta
R1,609 Discovery Miles 16 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book analyses the processes of institution and identity building of the European Union Diplomatic Service working on matters of foreign policy and external economic relations, both in Brussels and in the Commission's Delegations across the world. The book examines what images high ranking officials in charge of the EU foreign policy hold of the EU's and of the Commission's role in international politics. The author explains how the EU diplomatic network came into being, how it is currently organised and what changes are likely to take place with the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty. Through an empirically grounded and theoretically informed approach, it analyses how their idea of Europe is enacted through the Commission's diplomatic practices. Carta demonstrates how processes of socialization can bring about different foreign policy priorities, role conceptions and identities. This book makes an important contribution to debates about the idea of Europe, the European Union and European foreign policy, as well as more generally to the analysis of how ideas, identities and self-images shape the daily practice of large institutional bodies in international politics. It will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics, foreign policy, international organizations, international relations and diplomacy.

Taiwan's Security and Air Power - Taiwan's Defense Against the Air Threat from Mainland China (Paperback): Martin... Taiwan's Security and Air Power - Taiwan's Defense Against the Air Threat from Mainland China (Paperback)
Martin Edmonds, Michael Tsai
R1,496 Discovery Miles 14 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent concern about mainland China's intentions towards Taiwan, and more general concern about the risk of instability in the region, has led to growing interest in Taiwan's military strategy. This book brings together a range of experts from the West and from Taiwan itself who examine the key issues connected with Taiwan's air power, which is a key aspect of the China-Taiwan military balance. During the 1990s, Taiwan invested considerable resources in thoroughly re-equipping its air force with modern air defence and strike aircraft equipped with modern missiles, thereby denying China command of the air in any conflict in the short- to medium-term. In the longer-term, air power will remain a crucial influence on the overall balance, as China's efforts to upgrade its own air force's capabilities begin to undermine Taiwan's current advantages.

The United Nations Democracy Agenda - A Conceptual History (Hardcover, New): Kirsten Haack The United Nations Democracy Agenda - A Conceptual History (Hardcover, New)
Kirsten Haack
R2,339 Discovery Miles 23 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The United Nations Democracy Agenda" is a critical, conceptual-historical analysis of democracy at the United Nations, detailed in four "visions" of democracy: civilization, elections, governance, and developmental democracy. "I know it when I see it" were the famous words of US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart on defining obscenity. It is with the same conviction and (un)certainty with which liberal peacebuilders and democracy promoters have used democracy to achieve both the immediate goals of peacekeeping and the broader, global mission of the United Nations. Today, democracy may have gained an international dimension, yet its success as an organizational practice depends on how democracy has been defined. Drawing on political theory and democratization scholarship, "The United Nations Democracy Agenda" questions the meaning of this "well-known" idea. The book analyzes the way in which the UN, through its Secretary-General, relevant agencies, and organizational practices, have thought about, conceptualized, and used democracy. "The United Nations Democracy Agenda" shows that while the idea of democracy's "civilizing" nature has played a prominent part in its use by the UN, an early focus on sovereignty and self-determination delayed the emergence of the democracy agenda until the 1990s. Today, a comprehensive democracy agenda incorporates not only elections but a broad range of liberal democratic institutions. Despite this, the democracy agenda is at an impasse, both practically and philosophically. "The United Nations Democracy Agenda" questions whether an extension of the UN democracy agenda to include "developmental democracy" is feasible.

SME's and European Integration - Internationalisation Strategies (Paperback): Birgit Hegge SME's and European Integration - Internationalisation Strategies (Paperback)
Birgit Hegge
R1,610 Discovery Miles 16 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In easily accessible language, this book analyses the impact of Economic and Monetary Union on Small and Medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe. This overarching and widely researched study explains in a jargon-free manner the mechanisms of EMU and it's likely effect on SMEs. The book then goes on to explain and examine the results of seven case studies in Germany and France. Answers to many questions that have arisen over the years regarding SMEs and European integration can be found in the pages of this study. In a remarkably well-written and researched book, Birgit Hegge has succeeded in bringing together two interesting areas of research in an original and insightful manner. This book will be incredibly useful as a background reference for international economics and business students at an advanced level. The evidence and conclusions of this book will also, no doubt, make extremely interesting reading for European Policy makers along with those involved in European business.

Poland Within the European Union - New Awkward Partner or New Heart of Europe? (Paperback): Aleks Szczerbiak Poland Within the European Union - New Awkward Partner or New Heart of Europe? (Paperback)
Aleks Szczerbiak
R1,610 Discovery Miles 16 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the first five years of Polish EU membership. The combination of Poland's potential power as a major, and possibly controversial, player in both the region and Europe as a whole, and the apparent salience of Euroscepticism in domestic electoral politics at the core of the Polish government and party system presented the possibility that Poland would be a 'new awkward partner' in Europe. However, although Poles may have voted for EU-critical parties in large numbers no 'Eurosceptic backlash' has emerged. In fact, far from being a 'new awkward partner', Poland has tried to portray itself as the 'new heart of Europe' and it certainly came to be increasingly perceived as such in Brussels and by its European allies. This book focuses on two linked questions. Firstly, what impact has Poland had upon the EU as a new member state? Secondly, how has becoming an EU member impacted upon public attitudes towards the EU and Polish domestic politics, particularly on its party and electoral politics? Szczerbiak provides the first detailed empirical case study of the impact of Poland's EU membership on its politics and of Poland's impact on the EU. The book also makes broader theoretical contributions to our understanding of EU relations with its member states. As a result of the above, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of European Politics, political science and European integration.

Negotiating European Union (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Paul W. Meerts Negotiating European Union (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Paul W. Meerts; Edited by F. Cede
R2,672 Discovery Miles 26 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The European Union can be perceived as an enormous bilateral and multilateral process of internal and external negotiation. This book examines negotiations within member states, between member states, within and between the institutions of the Union and between the EU and other countries. It also analyzed processes, actors and interests. This book is, therefore, a unique probe into the relatively unknown arena of negotiation processes in the European Union.

A European Memory? - Contested Histories and Politics of Remembrance (Paperback): Malgorzata Pakier, Bo Strath A European Memory? - Contested Histories and Politics of Remembrance (Paperback)
Malgorzata Pakier, Bo Strath
R745 Discovery Miles 7 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"As the most comprehensive scholarly venture to use the memory concept for a broad assessment of the dark legacies of Nazism, Communism, and World War II for a common European identity, the volume has no equal. It overwhelms the reader with a plethora of both new and well established information and reflection...The overall direction coincides with the current trend towards internationalization of national histories. It can be considered a strong contribution to this important and worthwhile trend." Frank Trommler, University of Pennsylvania

An examination of the role of history and memory is vital in order to better understand why the grand design of a United Europe-with a common foreign policy and market yet enough diversity to allow for cultural and social differences-was overwhelmingly turned down by its citizens. The authors argue that this rejection of the European constitution was to a certain extent a challenge to the current historical grounding used for further integration and further demonstrates the lack of understanding by European bureaucrats of the historical complexity and divisiveness of Europe's past. A critical European history is therefore urgently needed to confront and re-imagine Europe, not as a harmonious continent but as the outcome of violent and bloody conflicts, both within Europe as well as with its Others. As the authors show, these dark shadows of Europe's past must be integrated, and the fact that memories of Europe are contested must be accepted if any new attempts at a United Europe are to be successful.

Ma gorzata Pakier is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Sociology, Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities, and is also active in planning the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. She received her PhD from the European University Institute in Florence, Department of History and Civilization. Her research interests include the media of memory, especially film, museum, and city spaces, and Holocaust memory and representation.

Bo Strath was Professor of Contemporary History at the European University Institute in Florence (1997-2007) and is currently Academy of Finland Distinguished Professor of Nordic, European and World History at Helsinki University. His research concentrates on questions of modernity and the use of history in a European and global perspective.

The Responsibility to Provide in Southeast Asia - Towards an Ethical Explanation (Hardcover): See Seng Tan The Responsibility to Provide in Southeast Asia - Towards an Ethical Explanation (Hardcover)
See Seng Tan
R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite the long-held and jealously guarded ASEAN principle of non-intervention, this innovative and theoretically rich book argues that states in Southeast Asia have begun to display an increasing readiness to think about sovereignty in terms not only of state responsibility to their own populations but also towards neighbouring countries as well.

The British People and the League of Nations - Democracy, Citizenship and Internationalism, C.1918-45 (Hardcover): Helen... The British People and the League of Nations - Democracy, Citizenship and Internationalism, C.1918-45 (Hardcover)
Helen McCarthy
R2,353 Discovery Miles 23 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the decades following Europe's first total war, millions of British men and women looked to the League of Nations as the symbol and guardian of a new world order based on international co-operation. Founded in 1919 to preserve peace between its member-states, the League inspired a rich, participatory culture of political protest, popular education and civic ritual which found expression through the establishment of voluntary societies in dozens of countries across Europe and beyond. Embodied in the hugely popular League of Nations Union, this pro-League movement touched Britain in profound ways. Foremost amongst the League societies, the Union became one of Britain's largest voluntary associations and a powerful advocate of democratic accountability and popular engagement in the making of foreign policy. Based on extensive archival research, The British people and the League of Nations offers a vivid account of this popular League consciousness and in so doing reveals the vibrant character of associational life between the wars. -- .

European Values - Challenges and Opportunities for EU Governance (Hardcover): Francois Foret, Oriane Calligaro European Values - Challenges and Opportunities for EU Governance (Hardcover)
Francois Foret, Oriane Calligaro
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Redefinitions of EU borders (enlargements, Brexit), geopolitical challenges (conflicts, migrations, terrorism, environmental risks) and the economic and financial crises have triggered debates on the common values that hold European countries and citizens together, justify public action and ensure the sustainability of European governance. This book discusses the genesis of and increasing references to "European values", their appropriation by diverse groups of actors and their impact on public action. It argues that European values are a broad and flexible symbolic repertoire, instrumental to serving diverging ends, and a resource for both negotiation and conflicts. Looking at the broader picture, the book reflects on the role of values in the institutionalization of the EU as a political order and paves the way to an assessment of its singularity in comparison with other polities across time and space. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners in EU politics, comparative politics, IR, public policy, sociology and cultural studies.

Religious NGOs at the United Nations - Polarizers or Mediators? (Hardcover): Claudia Baumgart-Ochse, Klaus Dieter Wolf Religious NGOs at the United Nations - Polarizers or Mediators? (Hardcover)
Claudia Baumgart-Ochse, Klaus Dieter Wolf
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Examining the involvement of religious NGOs (RNGOs) at the UN, this book explores whether they polarize political debates at the UN or facilitate agreement on policy issues. The number of RNGOs engaging with the United Nations (UN) has grown considerably in recent years: RNGOs maintain relations with various UN agencies, member-state missions, and other NGOs, and participate in UN conferences and events. This volume includes both a quantitative overview of RNGOs at the UN and qualitative analyses of specific policy issues such as international development, climate change, business and human rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights, international criminal justice, defamation of religions, and intercultural dialogue and cooperation. The contributions explore the factors that explain the RNGOs' normative positions and actions and scrutinise the assumption that religions introduce non-negotiable principles into political debate and decision-making that inevitably lead to conflict and division. Presenting original research on RNGOs and issues of global public policy, this volume will be relevant to both researchers and policy-makers in the fields of religion and international relations, the United Nations, and non-state actors and global governance.

It provides an unprecedented cross-national investigation of West European political institutions from 1945 until the present day, as well as situating modern parliamentary democracy in the context of changing political parties and the growing importance of the European Union.

Commercial Realism and EU Trade Policy - Competing for Economic Power in Asia and the Americas (Hardcover): Katharina L.... Commercial Realism and EU Trade Policy - Competing for Economic Power in Asia and the Americas (Hardcover)
Katharina L. Meissner
R4,495 Discovery Miles 44 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The European Union (EU) is at the forefront of engaging in external trade relations outside of the World Trade Organization (WTO) with entire regions and economic powerhouses. Understanding why and how the EU engages in one of the most active fields of external relations is crucial. This book fills a gap in the literature by analysing motives on the modes - bilateralism, inter-regionalism, or multilateralism - of EU external trade relations towards regional organizations in Asia and Latin America outside of the WTO. In particular, it examines why the EU turned from interregional to bilateral external trade relations towards these world regions - a question that is, to date, under-researched. By developing and testing an original approach rooted in realist theorizing coined 'commercial realism', it examines systematically the explanatory power of commercial realism against liberal-institutionalist approaches dominant in the literature on EU external relations through five in-depth case studies. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students in EU Politics/Studies, EU external relations, inter-regionalism and more broadly to International Relations and International Political Economy.

International Disability Law - A Practical Approach to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities... International Disability Law - A Practical Approach to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Hardcover)
Coomara Pyaneandee
R4,492 Discovery Miles 44 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a concise guide to international disability law. It analyses the case law of the CRPD Committee and other international human rights treaty bodies, and provides commentaries on more than 50 leading cases. The author elaborates on the obligations of States Parties under the CRPD and other international treaties, while also spelling out the rights of persons with disabilities, and the different mechanisms that exist at both domestic and international levels for ensuring that those rights are respected, protected and promoted. The author also delineates the traditional differentiation between civil and political rights on the one hand, and economic, social and cultural rights on the other. He demonstrates, through analysis of the evolving case law, how the gap between these two sets of rights is gradually closing. The result is a powerful tool for political decisionmakers, academics, legal practitioners, law students, persons with disabilities and their representative organisations, human rights activists and general readers.

EU Emergency Response Policies and NGOs - Trends and Innovations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Daniela Irrera EU Emergency Response Policies and NGOs - Trends and Innovations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Daniela Irrera
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book analyses trends and changes in the European Union's (EU) humanitarian aid policy, by focusing on the performance of Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs). NGOs have developed strong relationships with international institutions but have also maintained direct interaction with EU member states. The result is a multi-layered process in which national interests, common values, universal principles and global duties meet and interact. By combining a deepening of the theoretical debate with the use of empirical data on the funding of NGO projects by EU institutions and member states, the book significantly furthers our understanding of the complex relationship between these actors. It will appeal to students and scholars interested in EU politics, global security, and international aid, as well as practitioners in the humanitarian field.

Britain, Europe and Civil Nuclear Energy, 1945-62 - Power Politics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Martin Theaker Britain, Europe and Civil Nuclear Energy, 1945-62 - Power Politics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Martin Theaker
R3,359 Discovery Miles 33 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the role played by civil nuclear energy in Britain's relationship with Europe between the end of the Second World War and London's first application to join the European Communities. Tracing the development of the British nuclear programme as it emerged as a global leader in constructing the world's first atomic power stations, it analyses how the threat of energy shortages throughout the 1950s presented ministers with a golden opportunity to utilise nuclear cooperation as an instrument to influence the political shape of Europe. Importantly, this book will show how this chance was missed by ministers due to a combination of disorganization and diplomatic pressure, as well as a perennial lack of domestic resources. In so doing, this book joins the long-disconnected historiographies of European integration and nuclear energy to offer a new perspective on both scholarly fields.
