Bicycling Science (Paperback, fourth edition): David Gordon Wilson, Theodor Schmidt Bicycling Science (Paperback, fourth edition)
David Gordon Wilson, Theodor Schmidt; Contributions by Jeremy J M. Papadopoulos
R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An updated edition of a classic: an indispensable companion for a new era in cycling. The bicycle is almost unique among human-powered machines in that it uses human muscles in a near-optimum way. This essential volume offers a comprehensive account of the history of bicycles, how human beings propel them, what makes them go faster-and what keeps them from going even faster. Over the years, and through three previous editions, Bicycling Science has become the bible of technical bicycling not only for designers and builders of bicycles but also for cycling enthusiasts. After a brief history of bicycles and bicycling that demolishes many widespread myths, this fourth edition covers recent experiments and research on human-powered transportation, with updated material on cycling achievements, human-powered machines for use on land and in air and water, power-assisted bicycles, and human physiology. The authors have also added new information on aerodynamics, rolling drag, transmission of power from rider to wheels, braking, heat management, steering and stability, power and speed, and other topics. This edition also includes many new references and figures. With racks of bikeshare bikes on city sidewalks, and new restrictions on greenhouse gas-emitting cars, bicycle use will only grow. This book is the indispensable companion for a new era in cycling.

Designed for Dry Feet - Flood Protection and Land Reclamation in the Netherlands (Paperback, illustrated edition): Robert J.... Designed for Dry Feet - Flood Protection and Land Reclamation in the Netherlands (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Robert J. Hoeksema
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Few countries exist where humans have exerted a greater influence in shaping the landscape than the Netherlands. Located in the lowland delta of three major rivers, this small European country has fought for more than a thousand years to protect its inhabitants from floods and to reclaim flooded land. ""Designed for Dry Feet"" explores Holland's unique challenges in water control and management. Hoeksema begins by discussing the history of flood protection and land reclamation as well as the history of water management organizations. He then focuses on specific activities and projects, such as simple dwelling mounds, 17th-century windmill-powered lake draining systems, 19th-century steam-powered drainage activities, and 20th-century land reclamation and flood protection projects. Hoeksema also includes information about travel in the Netherlands, which he organizes into six excursions designed for those visiting this magnificent country. This book will certainly be a great asset to civil engineers from all over the world, as the technology from one country's battle with flood protection is borrowed to rebuild others.

Modern Irrigation Technologies for Smallholders in Developing Countries (Paperback): Gez Cornish Modern Irrigation Technologies for Smallholders in Developing Countries (Paperback)
Gez Cornish
R734 R688 Discovery Miles 6 880 Save R46 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern Irrigation Technologies reviews the experience of small holders with irrigation technologies under a range of diverse conditions in many different countries. Some people argue that modern irrigation technologies are the key to increased food production. However, projects introducing modern irrigation technologies in the developing world have often failed because the irrigation hardware, which has been developed for high-technology commercial agriculture, cannot be easily adapted for the use of the smallholder. The author identifies the pre-conditions relating to water availability, institutional support and economic opportunity that must be satisfied before small holders in developing countries can adopt irrigation methods and benefit from them. The circumstances in which modern technologies have been introduced are identified, and the relative success or otherwise of the initiatives are summarized. The book also contains a practical review of the range of irrigation hardware that is available and indicates the types of equipment that are more likely to meet the requirements of the smallholder sector. Modern Irrigation Technologies will be an invaluable guide to project workers, planners and small holders involved in planning and designing irrigation projects.

How to Make and Use the Treadle Irrigation Pump (Paperback): Carl Bielenberg, Hugh Allen How to Make and Use the Treadle Irrigation Pump (Paperback)
Carl Bielenberg, Hugh Allen
R515 R484 Discovery Miles 4 840 Save R31 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The treadle irrigation pump is able to lift up to 7000 litres of water per hour using the power of the human body, and can be locally made at low cost in small-scale metalworking shops. Its acceptance in Bangladesh, where it was first developed in 1984, is extraordinary, with over 500,000 pumps estimated now to be in use.;The current design offered in this manual has evolved from the Bangladesh original into a fully portable pump with both lift and pressure capacity and is especially appropriate to situations where soils are permeable, and water cannot easily be distributed through channels. The manual is intended to be read primarily by organizations engaged in economic development activities which have a particular expertise in technology transfer; it is not intended just as a step-by-step guide for the manufacturer (although it can be used in this way).

The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta has newly emerged 'char' islands, resulting from the deposition of sediment, which are very vulnerable, socially, institutionally and environmentally. This book explains how the governments of Bangladesh and the Netherlands and the International Fund for Agricultural Development cooperated on a land-based rural development project to give settlers security and purpose. It details how they engaged communities and civil societies, and implemented an infrastructure aimed at reducing flooding, improving drainage, and providing adequate drinking water and sanitation. The book describes the project's application to crop and animal agriculture, and the development of value chains and encouragement of female participation. It considers the financial underpinning and infrastructure, as well as how to ensure the impacts of the scheme are enduring. The scheme serves as a model for support projects to vulnerable groups faced with climate change and other environmental challenges. This book is suitable for students, researchers, specialists and practitioners in rural development, water resources, land management and soil science.

Ground Water Recharge Using Waters of Impaired Quality (Paperback): Committee on Ground Water Recharge, National Research... Ground Water Recharge Using Waters of Impaired Quality (Paperback)
Committee on Ground Water Recharge, National Research Council, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Commission on Geosciences, Environment and Resources
R2,043 Discovery Miles 20 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As demand for water increases, water managers and planners will need to look widely for ways to improve water management and augment water supplies. This book concludes that artificial recharge can be one option in an integrated strategy to optimize total water resource management and that in some cases impaired-quality water can be used effectively as a source for artificial recharge of ground water aquifers. Source water quality characteristics, pretreatment and recharge technologies, transformations during transport through the soil and aquifer, public health issues, economic feasibility, and legal and institutional considerations are addressed. The book evaluates three main types of impaired quality water sources--treated municipal wastewater, stormwater runoff, and irrigation return flow--and describes which is the most consistent in terms of quality and quantity. Also included are descriptions of seven recharge projects.

Emmanuel Lamptey
R1,387 R1,262 Discovery Miles 12 620 Save R125 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Coastal lagoons are fragile ecosystems that account for 13-15 percent of the world's littoral zone. Coastal lagoons constitute an essential environmental reservoir for fluvial sediments due to their capacity to retain them and also the accompanied elemental pollutants. In recent times it has been a common practice to redistribute large amount of coastal sediments for beach nourishment projects to combat shoreline retreat. The problem of beach/shoreline recession/erosion are as a result escalating impacts of emerging global geophysical changes, such as rising sea levels, and coastal development. This book examines the environmental effects of engineered solutions of massive dredge-and-fill methods which have been adopted world-wide in regard to the issue of shoreline erosion.

Laboratory physical models are a valuable tool for coastal engineers. Physical models help us to understand the complex hydrodynamic processes occurring in the nearshore zone and they provide reliable and economic engineering design solutions. This book is about the art and science of physical modeling as applied in coastal engineering. The aim of the book is to consolidate and synthesize into a single text much of the knowledge about physical modeling that has been developed worldwide. This book was written to serve as a graduate-level text for a course in physical modeling or as a reference text for engineers and researchers engaged in physical modeling and laboratory experimentation. The first three chapters serve as an introduction to similitude and physical models, covering topics such as advantages and disadvantages of physical models, systems of units, dimensional analysis, types of similitude and various hydraulic similitude criteria applicable to coastal engineering models.Practical application of similitude principles to coastal engineering studies is covered in Chapter 4 (Hydrodynamic Models), Chapter 5 (Coastal Structure Models) and Chapter 6 (Sediment Transport Models). These chapters develop the appropriate similitude criteria, discuss inherent laboratory and scale effects and overview the technical literature pertaining to these types of models. The final two chapters focus on the related subjects of laboratory wave generation (Chapter 7) and measurement and analysis techniques (Chapter 8).

Practical Drainage for Golf, Sportsturf and Hortic Horticulture (Hardcover): Mcintyre Practical Drainage for Golf, Sportsturf and Hortic Horticulture (Hardcover)
Mcintyre
R2,574 Discovery Miles 25 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Practical Drainage is easy to read and presented in a non-technical style generously supported with helpful illustrations. There are three key messages in this book: water moves sideways only slowly through soil--leading to a detailed description of how drains work; the how-and-why of perched water table methods of construction; and sands are different from one another--they must be tested before use in turf root zones. These key messages are preceded by detailed descriptions of how water moves into soils and the effects of compaction on that movement. The final chapters give step-by-step guidelines for calculating drain spacings and depths, based on measurements of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil and its various layers. There are also chapters about how to measure hydraulic conductivity and how to design and install sub-soil drainage systems.

Committee on the Restoration and Protection of Coastal Louisiana, Ocean Studies Board, Division on Earth and Life Studies, National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the past 50 years, coastal Louisiana has suffered catastrophic land loss due to both natural and human causes. This loss has increased storm vulnerability and amplified risks to lives, property, and economies--a fact underscored by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Drawing Louisiana's New Map reviews a restoration plan proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana, finding that, although the individual projects in the study are scientifically sound, there should be more and larger scale projects that provide a comprehensive approach to addressing land loss over such a large area. More importantly, the study should be guided by a detailed map of the expected future landscape of coastal Louisiana that is developed from agreed upon goals for the region and the nation.

The Drainage of Fens and Low Lands - By Gravitation and Steam Power (Paperback): William Henry Wheeler The Drainage of Fens and Low Lands - By Gravitation and Steam Power (Paperback)
William Henry Wheeler
R1,083 Discovery Miles 10 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A respected hydraulic engineer, William Henry Wheeler (1832-1915) established himself as an authority in the fields of low-lying land reclamation and drainage, embanking, and the improvement of tidal rivers and harbours. Based on articles written for The Engineer in 1887, he published this more substantial work in 1888 to provide a practical point of reference for those working on existing drainage systems or designing and implementing new schemes. Restoring Coastal Louisiana - Enhancing the Role of Engineering and Science in the Restoration Program (Paperback): Restoring Coastal Louisiana - Enhancing the Role of Engineering and Science in the Restoration Program (Paperback)
R1,464 Discovery Miles 14 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Louisiana's coastal wetlands represent a significant natural and economic resource for the state and the nation but have been disappearing at a rate of 25 to 35 square miles each year. In the past 50 years, more than 1,500 square miles have been lost. The wetlands contain 95 per cent of all marine species in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 per cent of the nation's fisheries, one of the largest habitats in the world for migratory waterfowl, and more than 25 per cent of all oil and gas used in the United States originates or pass through there. They also serve as a buffer for hurricanes. The state of Louisiana asked the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to convene a summit to discuss technical aspects involved in carrying out restoration programs, and to report on the insights that could be drawn from the summit. This report of the ASCE Task Committee on America's Wetland provides conclusions and recommendations concerning the technical topics discussed at the summit, as well as the Task Committee's recommendations for a path forward.

Battling the Inland Sea - Floods, Public Policy, and the Sacramento Valley (Paperback, Revised): Robert Kelley Battling the Inland Sea - Floods, Public Policy, and the Sacramento Valley (Paperback, Revised)
Robert Kelley; Foreword by David N. Kennedy
R1,146 Discovery Miles 11 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Of late historians have become increasingly interested in the vast re-ordering of the environment involved in the creation of America. Nowhere was this more true than in the Sacramento Valley where re-ordering edged into folly. "Battling the Inland Sea is a powerful evocation of the losses and gains involved in battling the mighty Sacramento River. But more than this, it is an exploration of the national will as it sought to rearrange nature herself with such mixed results. Here is history dealing with the most elemental forces of land, water and engineering as they are shaped by public policy. Here is the profound drama of value and symbol which occurs when Americans come into conflict with forces over which they can exercise, as Robert Kelley shows, only the most transitory and pyrrhic victories."--Kevin Starr, author of the "Americans and the California Dream

"Robert Kelley's research into the origins of California's first great flood control system has already helped to inform the shaping of the state's water laws. Now he opens up the benefits of that work for the average reader in a wonderfully clear and engaging story that manages, among other things, to show that water development in the United States hasn't been just a matter of engineering but a cultural and intellectual achievement as well."--William Kahrl, author of "Water and Power

"A vividly written narrative of one of the major transformations of the physical world we inhabit. Robert Kelley draws upon his rich store of learning and insight to set the struggles over the Sacramento Valley into a broad context. His book contains important lessons for those who would understand the American economy, environment, politics,or culture."--Daniel W. Howe, author of "The Political Culture of the American Whigs

Coastal Stabilization (Hardcover): Rong-chung John Hsu, Richard Silvester Coastal Stabilization (Hardcover)
Rong-chung John Hsu, Richard Silvester
