Hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo - Critical legal and environmental perspectives (Paperback): Jan Glazewski, Surina Esterhuyse Hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo - Critical legal and environmental perspectives (Paperback)
Jan Glazewski, Surina Esterhuyse
R832 R701 Discovery Miles 7 010 Save R131 (16%) Ships in 4 - 8 working days

Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives explores a broad-ranging set of questions related to proposed hydraulic fracturing or `fracking' in the Karoo. The book is multidisciplinary, with contributors including natural scientists, social scientists, and academics from the humanities, all concerned with the ways in which scientific facts and debates about fracking have been framed and given meaning. The work comprises four parts: Part 1 provides an international, legal, energy, economic, and revenue overview of the topic. Part 2 has a physio-geographic theme, with chapters on the inter-related aspects of water, geology, geo-hydrology, seismicity and biodiversity, as well as archaeological and palaeontological considerations. Part 3 focuses on public health, and sociological and humanities-related aspects, and Part 4 addresses the relevant laws, emphasising their implementation and the role of governance. The underlying theme of Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental Perspectives is one of caution. The book emphasises the need for collaboration between the natural and social sciences and the responsibilities of those charged with the implementation and governance of the fracking enterprise if South Africa hopes to effectively manage fracking at all.

Whispers from the depths - The Kariba story (Paperback): Liz Wickins, Mike Wickins Whispers from the depths - The Kariba story (Paperback)
Liz Wickins, Mike Wickins
R250 R200 Discovery Miles 2 000 Save R50 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Whispers from the depths is more than just the story of the building of the Kariba Dam in the mid-1950s. Built in just five years against overwhelming odds, the dam is a monument to engineering excellence. Shrouded in political undertones, the construction of the dam was vital for the hydro-electric power it would provide for Zambia’s burgeoning copper industry. Little thought, however, appears to have been given to the future of the human and animal populations who lived in the valley that would be inundated when the dam was completed. The question has to be asked: Was this awe-inspiring man-made creation achieved at too high a cost in terms of the human suffering and environmental devastation it caused? Central to the story of Kariba was the fate of the Tonga people who had for centuries lived in the Gwembe valley, due to be flooded when the sluice gates were finally closed to halt the flow of the mighty Zambezi River. Approximately 57 000 people were forced to move from their ancestral homes, abandoning family graves and spiritual sites to the depths of Kariba's water. They became a dispersed people who have never been able to reunite as a cohesive society, never again been able to live peacefully on the banks of the river which gave them life. Animals, too, perished in their thousands despite the gallant efforts of wildlife personnel who mounted a hastily planned rescue mission known as Operation Noah. Whispers from the depths gives a voice to the all but forgotten BaTonga. It celebrates their unique culture but deplores the price they paid for progress – a price from which they themselves derived no benefit whatsoever.

Dead in the Water - Global Lessons from the World Bank's Model Hydropower Project in Laos (Hardcover): Bruce Shoemaker,... Dead in the Water - Global Lessons from the World Bank's Model Hydropower Project in Laos (Hardcover)
Bruce Shoemaker, William Robichaud; Foreword by Yos Santasombat; Afterword by Philip Hirsch
R1,883 Discovery Miles 18 830 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

For decades, large dam projects have been undertaken by both nations and international agencies with the aim of doing good: preventing floods, bringing electricity to rural populations, producing revenues for poor countries, and more. But time after time, the social, economic, and environmental costs have outweighed the benefits of the dams, sometimes to a disastrous degree. In this volume, a diverse group of experts-involved for years with the Nam Theun 2 dam in Laos-issue an urgent call for critical reassessment of the approach to, and rationale for, these kinds of large infrastructure projects in developing countries. In the 2000s, as the World Bank was reeling from revelations of past hydropower failures, it nonetheless promoted the enormous Nam Theun 2 project. NT2, the Bank believed, offered a new, wiser model of dam development that would alleviate poverty, protect the environment, engage locally affected people in a transparent fashion, and stimulate political transformation. This was a tall order. For the first time, this book shows in detail why, despite assertions of success from the World Bank and other agencies involved in the project, the dam's true story has been one of substantial loss for affected villagers and the regional environment. Nam Theun 2 is an important case study that illustrates much broader problems of global development policy.

Loose Boundary Hydraulics (Paperback, Student): Arved J. Raudkivi Loose Boundary Hydraulics (Paperback, Student)
Arved J. Raudkivi
R2,562 Discovery Miles 25 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sediment transport, two-phase flow and loose boundary hydraulics are some of the problems of interaction between fluid flow (water or air) and boundaries that may be non-cohesive (alluvial) or cohesive. Unlike in classical hydraulics, these boundaries can change their shape and texture with changing flow conditions. Some of the material from the boundaries may be entrained into the flow, or sediment may be added to the flow, sometimes by tributaries as suspended matter. One instance is the transport of granular material in pipelines Since the changing boundaries are the central feature of most flow processes in nature, the term loose boundary hydraulics is here introduced.
Examines the physical processes involved in the interaction between air or liquid flow and the solid boundaries of its movement, showing how the properties of each material affect the dynamics between them.

Dikes and Revetments - Design, Maintenance and Safety Assessment (Hardcover): Kristian Pilarczyk Dikes and Revetments - Design, Maintenance and Safety Assessment (Hardcover)
Kristian Pilarczyk
R5,274 Discovery Miles 52 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Low-lying countries, such as the Netherlands, are strongly dependent on good and safe sea defences. In the past, the design of dikes and revetments was mostly based on vague experience, rather than on general valid calculation methods. The demand for reliable design methods for protective structures has, in the Netherlands, resulted in increased research in this field. These contributions have been prepared by Dutch experts participating in the study groups of the Technical Advisory Committee on Water Defences. The book opens with an outline of general strategy and methodology on sea defences, illustrated in the following chapters by technical information on specific items and Dutch experience, and it ends with more general aspects such as probabilistic approach, integral (multifunctional) design, management & safety assessment. Together, these chapters provide an almost complete technical overview of the items needed for the design and maintenance of dikes and revetments. The enclosed CRESS-program allows for an initial estimation of hydraulic loads and preliminary design.

The "EAU 2012" takes into account the new generation of standards, which is shortly to be introduced into the building control system; it consists of Eurocode 7, the associated national application documents and additional national regulations (DIN 1054:2010). In certain cases, partial safety factors are determined differently based on experience in practice. This means that the safety standard of sea and port buildings remains in place; the recommendations nevertheless satisfy the requirements for international recognition and application regarding the planning, design, specification, tender procedure, construction and monitoring, as well as the handover of - and cost accounting for - port and waterway systems under uniform criteria.

James Massola
R263 R238 Discovery Miles 2 380 Save R25 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First came the awful news that 12 boys and their football coach were missing. Then came the flickering video of the boys found by a pair of British divers nine days later. Monsoon rains had raised the water level in the cave system, and they were trapped in an air pocket, surrounded by rising muddy water, over two kilometres from the cave entrance. Expert British, Australian, American, Chinese, and other international divers joined the Thai Navy SEALs and hundreds of local volunteers to mount one of the most risky and complex rescue operations the world has ever seen. South-east Asia correspondent James Massola recreates the drama, tension, and inspiration of the days in July 2018 when the eyes of the whole world were trained on a remote Thai mountain. Very little information about what happened inside the cave was released by the Thai authorities at the time, but through interviews Massola has managed to obtain extensive details of the nine long days the Wild Boars were on their own and during the rescue operation itself as well as background information about the boys and coach. He writes about the pivotal role of the British Cave Rescue Council in leading the international effort, and determining the technical aspects of the rescue. He reveals how the Thai, British, US, Australian and other international divers worked together so smoothly, when even a minor miscommunication could have resulted in death or serious injury. And, most dramatically, he discloses the number of instances in which the rescue operation nearly went wrong.

River Dynamics - Geomorphology to Support Management (Hardcover): Bruce L. Rhoads River Dynamics - Geomorphology to Support Management (Hardcover)
Bruce L. Rhoads
R1,721 Discovery Miles 17 210 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Rivers are important agents of change that shape the Earth's surface and evolve through time in response to fluctuations in climate and other environmental conditions. They are fundamental in landscape development, and essential for water supply, irrigation, and transportation. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the geomorphological processes that shape rivers and that produce change in the form of rivers. It explores how the dynamics of rivers are being affected by anthropogenic change, including climate change, dam construction, and modification of rivers for flood control and land drainage. It discusses how concern about environmental degradation of rivers has led to the emergence of management strategies to restore and naturalize these systems, and how river management techniques work best when coordinated with the natural dynamics of rivers. This textbook provides an excellent resource for students, researchers, and professionals in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, river science, and environmental policy.

Water resources stored by dams and reservoirs play an essential role in water resource management, hydropower and flood control. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management.

Crops, People and Irrigation - Water Allocation Practices of Farmers and Engineers (Paperback): Geert Diemer, Frans Huibers Crops, People and Irrigation - Water Allocation Practices of Farmers and Engineers (Paperback)
Geert Diemer, Frans Huibers
R454 Discovery Miles 4 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most engineer-designed irrigation systems assume water will be distributed on the basis of delivery schedules that optimize physical relationships. These schedules often neglect the social parameters that govern irrigation management. This deficiency probably constrains yields on many of the gravity schemes that account for 90 per cent of all land irrigated in developing countries. The shortcoming is partly attributable to the widespread failure to study water distribution processes from an angle that is both technical and social.;In the case studies presented in this collection, irrigation engineers describe water distribution practices as they actually occur in various schemes. Six of the schemes (in Mexico, Portugal, and Bolivia) are farmer-managed and one (in south India) is managed jointly by farmers and technical officers. The authors relate water flows to social processes and contrast conventional engineering wisdom with the practices they have observed.

Dams have emerged as one of the most important tools for the management of rivers. Over 45,000 large dams around the world have played an important role in helping communities and economies harness water resources for food production, energy generation, flood control and domestic use. The benefits derived from large dams have made a significant contributions to human development. Floods have taken a large toll of human lives over the years and also caused large economic losses. World Bank is pushing construction of large dams. Along with dams, the river interlinking project is also under consideration in India. The more recent focus has been on the strategic development of sustainable irrigation practices within an integrated Catchment Management context. World Commission on Dams (WCD) has suggested some recommendations and strategic priorities for the construction of dams. WCD report has proved to be important in reducing environmental and social challenges. This book aims at exploring the significance of rivers and dams from economic, ecological, social and cultural angles. The book tries to present general patterns and trends in the management of rivers as well as planning and operation for large dams. The central issues in the large dams debate - the benefits and adverse impacts - are also considered. The book is presented in three sections: 'Rivers and Darns: An Overview', 'Key Issues' and 'Country Experiences'.
