advanced reservoir and asset management.
The management of a canal starts from setting the demand delivery
accurately taking into account the crops necessities during the
irrigation cycle and establishing the gate trajectories for
controlling the canal in each time step. In an ideal case; the
system would be controlled but someone could introduce a
disturbance in the canal which could deviated the real canal state
from the desired canal state. In that circumstance; it would be
necessary a feedback controller which could aid the watermaster to
restore the desired canal state. In order to fulfill this
objective; we define an overall control diagrams scheme which
splits the management of the canal control in different blocks and
each of these blocks is represented by a particular algorithm. The
algorithms developed and tested for us in this book are the CSI and
GoRoSoBo algorithms
The world's population is expected to increase to over 8 billion by
2020. About 60% of the total population of the world lives in
coastal areas and 65% of the cities with a population of over 2.5
million are located in coastal areas. Written by an international
panel of experts in the fields of engineering and risk management,
The Handbook of Coastal Disasters Mitigation presents a coherent
overview of 10 years of coastal disaster risk management and
engineering, during which some of the most relevant events of
recent time have taken place, including the Indian Ocean tsunami,
hurricanes Katrina and Sandy in the United States or the 2011
Japanese tsunami.
Tropical Cyclones: Observations and Basic Processes provides a
modern observational overview of tropical cyclone structure and
behavior. The book is organized into two sections. Part I builds a
new foundation for a basic understanding of tropical cyclone
genesis, intensification, and weakening. Part II employs the basic
elements developed in Chapters 2--10 to present new appraisals of
the accepted WISHE paradigm of vortex intensification, storm
energetics, requirements for a quasi-steady state hurricane, and
more likely transient lifecycle behavior in a consistent
three-dimensional flow configuration. Tropical Cyclones provides a
state-of-the-art summary of the fundamentals of cyclones accessible
to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and hurricane
forecasters. Tropical cyclones are one of the biggest threats to
life and property even in the formative stages of their
development. They include a number of different hazards that can
individually cause significant impacts on life and property, such
as storm surge, flooding, extreme winds, tornadoes, and lighting.

benthic habitat and coral reef restoration practitioners, and more.
Whispers from the depths is more than just the story of the
building of the Kariba Dam in the mid-1950s. Built in just five
years against overwhelming odds, the dam is a monument to
engineering excellence. Shrouded in political undertones, the
construction of the dam was vital for the hydro-electric power it
would provide for Zambia’s burgeoning copper industry. Little
thought, however, appears to have been given to the future of the
human and animal populations who lived in the valley that would be
inundated when the dam was completed. The question has to be asked:
Was this awe-inspiring man-made creation achieved at too high a
cost in terms of the human suffering and environmental devastation
it caused? Central to the story of Kariba was the fate of the Tonga
people who had for centuries lived in the Gwembe valley, due to be
flooded when the sluice gates were finally closed to halt the flow
of the mighty Zambezi River. Approximately 57 000 people were
forced to move from their ancestral homes, abandoning family graves
and spiritual sites to the depths of Kariba's water. They became a
dispersed people who have never been able to reunite as a cohesive
society, never again been able to live peacefully on the banks of
the river which gave them life. Animals, too, perished in their
thousands despite the gallant efforts of wildlife personnel who
mounted a hastily planned rescue mission known as Operation Noah.
Whispers from the depths gives a voice to the all but forgotten
BaTonga. It celebrates their unique culture but deplores the price
they paid for progress – a price from which they themselves derived
no benefit whatsoever.
This book collects together about sixty drawings of fishing boats
at Arbroath Harbour, completed between 1989 to 1995. There are also
fifteen drawings of the harbour at Montrose, and of other Scottish
harbours relevant to Arbroath, in the same period. The author's
viewpoint is that of an interested spectator who likes fishing
boats. While drawing, he gained valuable background information
from the local people, including some fishermen, that he met as he
worked. His notes on the harbours he draws, and on the boats and
people within them, are written in the hope that everyone reading
the book will 'feel close to the sea'. The main story unfolds
gradually, starting in 1989 and running through to 1995. It begins
with a bird's eye view of Arbroath Harbour, 'so that even if you
have never been to Arbroath, you will soon know your way around'.
At the end of the book there is a map that show the positions of
all the Scottish harbour towns mentioned in the text. 'I have
written not just for Arbroath people, or just for Scottish people,
or even just for British people. I have written the book for people
everywhere. The call of the sea is universal.'
Flooding is a global phenomenon that claims numerous lives
worldwide each year. Apart from the physical damage to buildings,
contents and loss of life, which are the most obvious, impacts of
floods upon households and other more indirect losses are often
overlooked. These indirect and intangible impacts are generally
associated with disruption to normal life and longer term health
issues. Flooding represents a major barrier to the alleviation of
poverty in many parts of the developing world, where vulnerable
communities are often exposed to sudden and life-threatening
events. As our cities continue to expand, their urban
infrastructures need to be re-evaluated and adapted to new
requirements related to the increase in population and the growing
areas under urbanization. Topics such as contamination and
pollution discharges in urban water bodies, as well as the
monitoring of water recycling systems are currently receiving a
great deal of attention from researchers and professional engineers
working in the water industry. The papers contained in this volume
cover these problems and deals with two main urban water topics:
water supply networks and urban drainage. Originating from the 7th
International Conference on Flood and Urban Water Management, the
included research works include innovative solutions that can help
bring about multiple benefits toward achieving integrated flood
risk and urban water management strategies and policy.
Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental
Perspectives explores a broad-ranging set of questions related to
proposed hydraulic fracturing or `fracking' in the Karoo. The book
is multidisciplinary, with contributors including natural
scientists, social scientists, and academics from the humanities,
all concerned with the ways in which scientific facts and debates
about fracking have been framed and given meaning. The work
comprises four parts: Part 1 provides an international, legal,
energy, economic, and revenue overview of the topic. Part 2 has a
physio-geographic theme, with chapters on the inter-related aspects
of water, geology, geo-hydrology, seismicity and biodiversity, as
well as archaeological and palaeontological considerations. Part 3
focuses on public health, and sociological and humanities-related
aspects, and Part 4 addresses the relevant laws, emphasising their
implementation and the role of governance. The underlying theme of
Hydraulic Fracturing in the Karoo: Critical Legal and Environmental
Perspectives is one of caution. The book emphasises the need for
collaboration between the natural and social sciences and the
responsibilities of those charged with the implementation and
governance of the fracking enterprise if South Africa hopes to
effectively manage fracking at all.

Well Test Analysis for Multilayered Reservoirs with Formation
Crossflow introduces the fundamentals of well test analysis of a
multilayered reservoir with formation crossflow. The effects of
reservoir parameters on wellbore pressure and flow rate are
examined, as is a proper method that has been established to
analyze well test data that leads to better determinations on the
reservoir parameters for each layer of the reservoir. Focusing on
multilayer models for data analysis, this reference explains the
reasons for the existence of single-phase crossflow in multilayer
reservoirs, exploring methods to establish them and presenting
practical applications to utilize and implement for today's more
complex reservoirs. Aiding in better well testing operations and
models, this book is a one-stop solution for today's reservoir and
production engineer, helping them understand every layer of their
reservoir.

to the development of conventional and unconventional reservoirs
and how these concepts are applied in the oil and gas industry to
meet both economic and technical challenges. Written in easy to
understand language, the book provides valuable information
regarding present-day tools, techniques, and technologies and
explains best practices on reservoir management and recovery
approaches. Various reservoir workflow diagrams presented in the
book provide a clear direction to meet the challenges of the
profession. As most reservoir engineering decisions are based on
reservoir simulation, a chapter is devoted to introduce the topic
in lucid fashion. The addition of practical field case studies make
Reservoir Engineering a valuable resource for reservoir engineers
and other professionals in helping them implement a comprehensive
plan to produce oil and gas based on reservoir modeling and
economic analysis, execute a development plan, conduct reservoir
surveillance on a continuous basis, evaluate reservoir performance,
and apply corrective actions as necessary.
