Buchbesprechung
Combines technical data on each American Civil War firearm and
details of its actual use on the battlefield--with a guide to
collecting and firing surviving relics and modern reproductions The
popular Civil War News columnist has written a unique work,
combining technical data on each Civil War firearm, an often
surprising treatment of their actual use on the battlefield, and a
guide to collecting and firing surviving relics and modern
reproductions.
This new illustrated book by noted Third Reich edged weapon author,
collector, and dealer Thomas Johnson explores the vast array of
militaria liberated from Germany by U.S. soldiers during the Second
World War. The book contains over 580 beautiful full-color,
large-format photographs of German daggers, swords, helmets,
uniforms, insignia, award documents, weapons, and many other rare
and unusual items. Also included is a generous selection of World
War II era photographs showing many items in the act of being
liberated.
The author presents here a survey of over 500 examples, in 6
categories, of African traditional weapons including knives,
daggers, long and short, swords, lances and throwing weapons. The
items, from various contexts and regions, have full commentaries
and are carefully drawn, including sheaths and scabbards where
applicable. Examples from most of the leading collections are
featured. Each chapter ends with a detailed typological and
comparative analysis, and catalogue by weapon category.
The first illustration of a cannon in Europe can be dated quite
precisely to 1326. This book explores the development of gunpowder, the
earliest appearance of cast-bronze cannon in Western Europe, followed
by the design and development of the wrought-iron cannon. The
wrought-iron hoop-and-stave method of barrel construction was a system
that came to dominate medieval artillery design both large and small
until the end of the 15th century, and saw the cannon used not only as
a prestige weapon, but start to be used as a practical and terrifying
weapon on the medieval battlefield. In 1453, the Ottomans' conquest of
Constantinople, with their extensive artillery, marked the triumph of
medieval firepower.
The book will focus on the technology and tactics of early European
artillery on both sea and land, and assess its impact on medieval
warfare.
Antigonides.
The reliefs of the column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome are used
extensively for the illustration of Roman soldiers. However,
despite the fact that in the last decades a number of sites at the
Danube Limes have been analyzed, where numerous militaria from the
Markomannic Wars have emerged, there is no comparison between this
work of official Roman art and the archaeological finds. This book
aims to address this lacuna. Each piece of equipment of the Roman
soldier is analyzed in its sculptural representation and compared
with the existing finds as well as supplementary comparisons with
secondary sources. The result is a broad picture of the Roman army
under Marcus Aurelius and of Rome's depiction of their forces in
state propaganda. In addition, the present work comprehensively
separates the antique parts of the frieze from the additions made
during the late Renaissance for the first time and thus provides a
solid basis for future archaeological and art historical
evaluations.
