Woodchucks and Woodchuck Rifles [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback): Charles Singer Landis Woodchucks and Woodchuck Rifles [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback)
Charles Singer Landis
R738 Discovery Miles 7 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2012 Reprint of 1951 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Profusely illustrated. Charles Singer Landis was the preeminent small-bore writer and target/varmint shooter of his time. Above all, Landis was an experimenter with a keen interest in the "how" and "why" of firearms and ammunition performance. He was a perceptive observer of wildlife, which made him an expert hunter. Best of all, he was a good writer with the ability to organize his vast store of knowledge and information and present it in a style both concise and eminently readable. His "Woodchucks and Woodchuck Rifles" remains one of the most definitive books on the subject.

Sixguns by Keith - The Standard Reference Work [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback): Elmer Keith Sixguns by Keith - The Standard Reference Work [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback)
Elmer Keith
R588 Discovery Miles 5 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2012 Reprint of 1955 Edition. Profusely illustrated. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Keith was born in Missouri in 1899. His family moved to Montana six years later, where he grew up around former outlaws, lawmen, buffalo hunters, and Indian fighters as his life spanned the time from the Civil War veterans and gunfighters of the Frontier to the more modern age of hand guns. His teachers had survived the bloodiest war in our nation's history and had seen the great herds of buffaloes and the cow towns that helped build the West. Keith's writings had great influence on firearms in general and especially on single action six guns. Keith's knowledge of every facet of handguns in general and six shooters in particular is truly remarkable. He covers it all, from history to game shooting to gun fighting and much more. Although this book was written before the advent of the .44 Magnum, Mr. Keith's knowledge and experience are invaluable, with his game shooting and long range abilities most impressive of all. Keith also covers slip shooting with the Colt SAA, a fascinating and surprisingly effective technique generally ignored by modern writers. But most importantly, Elmer's honesty and integrity are his greatest attributes to those who knew him. If you love good old six shooters, you must have this book. This title remains an important and classic work on the subject. Gunsmithing - A Manual of Firearm Design, Construction, Alteration and Remodeling [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback): Roy F... Gunsmithing - A Manual of Firearm Design, Construction, Alteration and Remodeling [Illustrated Edition] (Paperback)
Roy F Dunlap
R917 Discovery Miles 9 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

2012 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Illustrated with over 100 photos and drawings. Roy F. Dunlap's book is self-described as "a manual of firearms design, construction, alteration and remodeling for amateur and professional gunsmiths and users of modern firearms." What makes Dunlap's book important is its specificity. For example, instead of merely bringing up the need for a bench grinder, he cites why a 1/4- o r 1/3-horsepower, double-shaft model, turning at 1,750 rpm with a wire-brush wheel on one side and a medium-coarse wheel on the other is the best choice. He supports his recommendation by explaining why you'll find wider use for a medium coarse than a finer stone. His chapter entitled "Helpful Gunsmith Knowledge," is absolutely crammed with bits of information, and includes tips that he evidently could find no other place for in his book. In the midst of a general discussion on disassembly, for instance, Dunlap digresses to describe in detail a L-shaped tool he made to simplify reassembly of an L.C. Smith double and how to use it. All in all, Dunlap covers soldering and brazing; welding; heat treatment of metals; making and fitting sights and accessories; making, fitting and heat treatment of parts; cartridge information useful to gunsmiths; rifle barrels; chamber and barrel work; rifle-action work; pistol and revolver work; shotgun work; twenty two rim fire arms; browning, blueing and blacking of metal; fitting commercial metallic sights; mounting telescopic sights; wood for gun stocks; design of gun stocks; stock making; checkering; stock repair and alteration; stock finishing; styling the custom rifle; custom metal work; ornamentation of wood and metal; target rifles; the Garand rifle; testing facilities and apparatus; synthetic bedding; cartridge and chamber drawings; and data sheets. A classic work, profusely illustrated.

Stampings On Shotshells (Paperback): Ken J. Rutterford Stampings On Shotshells (Paperback)
Ken J. Rutterford
R1,381 Discovery Miles 13 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book you will find over 6,000 drawings of shotgun cartridge head-stampings. The information on these stampings is as important to the cartridge collector as the markings on coins are to the numismatist (or coin collector). In the early days of breech loading, any information to be found on a cartridge was stamped onto the base of the brass head. Many of today's shooting folk do not realise the vast amount of history that has gone in to the making of the modern cartridge. One reason for producing this book is to record some of this history so that it will not be lost to future generations. Up until the first world war, most towns in the UK had at least one firm that bought in printed and often stamped cartridge cases. These old firms, gunsmiths, gun-makers and also ironmongers, would load the cases and sell their own celebrated brands of shotgun cartridges. The paper tubes were often printed, but for just a little extra cost they would have their name and that of the town stamped in to the brass heads. Not all firms that sold their own cartridges would go to this expense, but many did and this book provides a record of many of them for the enthusiast.

Greenblatt Personal Firearms Record (Paperback): Kim Greenblatt Greenblatt Personal Firearms Record (Paperback)
Kim Greenblatt
R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The best firearms home log you can have because you can hide it in plain sight. With an innocent (and boring) looking title on the cover you can list over 600 firearms in this book to track your purchases. This book is not to be confused with the Curio & Relics FFL 03 bound book. This book is for logging in all your firearms in your collection. The purpose of the boring cover is for you to hide the book in plain sight on your desk, in a bookshelf - anywhere. It should be kept separate from your gun collection in case somebody breaks in and steals your firearms. You will have a separate record for the police, insurance company or whatever you need it for. Column headings include Manufacturer/Importer, Model, Serial Number, Type/Action, Caliber/Gauge, Date Acquired, Cost and Purchase location (address). Part of all proceeds go to Rett Syndrome research. A girl is born every 15 minutes with Rett Syndrome. Boys die at birth. Rett is part of the autistic spectrum. Be safe, legal and prepared with the Greenblatt Personal Firearms Record book.

This is the story of a search for information about a Civil War painting unique in several respects: it is on an old-fashioned roll-down window blind, is the only known surviving work of previously unknown soldier artist John H. G. Hood, and is the only known one of a Union soldier in a Confederate uniform. The man on horseback in the painting, James A. Hensal, was a dashing figure who during the war was sentenced to death by court-martial after shooting and killing his superior officer. For reasons having to do with his exploits, Hensal's execution was never carried out and he later rose to become chief of scouts for Union General Grenville Dodge. Speaking of Hensal, Dodge said, "He was the bravest man I ever knew." The painting now resides at the Guthrie County Historical Village in Panora, Iowa, the location where the painting was executed and where both John H. G. Hood and James A. Hensal lived after the war.

Armed America - The Remarkable Story of How and Why Guns Became as American as Apple Pie (Paperback): Clayton E. Cramer Armed America - The Remarkable Story of How and Why Guns Became as American as Apple Pie (Paperback)
Clayton E. Cramer
R485 Discovery Miles 4 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"For many Americans, guns seem to be a fundamental part of the American experience―and always have been."

Grand in scope, rigorous in research, and elegant in presenting the formative years of our country, "Armed America" traces the winding historical trail of United States citizens' passion for firearms. Author and historial Clayton E. Cramer goes back to the source, unearthing first-hand accounts from the colonial times, through the Revolutionary War period, and into the early years of the American Republic.

In "Armed America," Cramer depicts a budding nation dependent on its firearms not only for food and protection, but also for recreation and enjoyment. Through newspaper clippings, official documents, and personal diaries, he shows that recent grandiose theories claiming that guns were scarce in early America are shaky at best, and downright false at worst. Above all, Cramer allows readers a priceless glimpse of a country literally fighting for its identity.

For those who think that our citizens' attraction to firearms is a recent phenomenon, it's time to think again. "Armed America" proves that the right to bear arms is as American as apple pie.
