In SCAR TISSUE Anthony Kiedis, charismatic and highly articulate
frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recounts his remarkable life
story, and the history of the band itself. Raised in the Midwest,
he moved to LA aged eleven to live with his father Blackie,
purveyor of pills, pot, and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. After a
brief child-acting career, Kiedis dropped out of U.C.L.A. and
plunged headfirst into the demimonde of the L.A. underground music
scene. He formed the band with three schoolfriends - and found his
life's purpose. Crisscrossing the country, the Chili Peppers were
musical innovators and influenced a whole generation of
musicians.;But there's a price to pay for both success and excess
and in SCAR TISSUE, Kiedis writes candidly of the overdose death of
his soul mate and band mate, Hillel Slovak, and his own ongoing
struggle with an addiction to drugs.;SCAR TISSUE far transcends the
typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a
typical rock star. It is instead a compelling story of dedication
and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and
redemption.
Written by a renowned composer whose works have been performed by
major orchestras around the world, The Study of Orchestration is
the only text that explores the characteristics of orchestral
instruments and shows students how a master composer approaches
orchestration. The fourth edition invites students to experience
the instruments through online audio and video recordings and now
offers more coverage of writing for band.
A collection of true stories, gossip and details of 500 of the
singles that failed to dent the Top 10, but which are still worthy
of inclusion in a volume such as this. This book demonstrates just
how much a melting pot of talent, creativity and energy the decade
really was. It s not just in the groove, but between the grooves
that you'll find the magic. Nuggets of information and connections
between the artists, producers and songwriters offer a unique
insight into the careers and development of key (and not so key)
performers. The idea behind this book is simple to gather together
a fantastic selection of 60s pop releases that are not nearly as
well-known as they deserve to be. Packed full of beautiful glossy
pictures of each and every disc featured, it is a colourful and
quirky guide to records that you may never have heard of, but you
will certainly want to listen to when you've finished.
The Eighties were about big ideas writ large - new money, new
style, gender fluidity, gay pride, attritional politics, the
'special relationship', nuclear fear, AIDS, cocaine, ecstasy,
tabloid royalty, the rise of urban pop, and ultimately geopolitical
chaos. Using a big narrative approach, Dylan Jones' history of the
decade in pop frames the decade through some of its most important
and popular hits, choosing records which either epitomised their
time, or ushered in a new cultural shift. So we move seamlessly
from Rapper's Delight and the genre defining moment of hip hop into
The Specials' spectral, Ghost Town; from ABC and the apotheosis of
New Pop (The Look of Love) to Madonna's breakthrough moment with
Like a Virgin, and so on. In the '80s each year brought a new twist
as technology shifted and genres snowballed, MTV reigned supreme
and the story of pop became globalised. It was a decade of excess
in all areas, especially ambition, but it was in the transcendent
moments of pop perfection that the '80s found its true art-form.
Subjective and idiosyncratic, SHINY AND NEW takes us from downtown
New York to post-industrial Manchester, in the first widescreen
attempt to weave together the stories, the songs and events that
re-shaped music and society.
This book contains all the scales and arpeggios required for
ABRSM's Grade 5 Piano exam. It covers all the new requirements from
2021.
Visually stunning and deeply insightful, 80s Sound and Vision is
THE defining book of an unforgettable decade, capturing the raw
energy, creativity and flamboyance of the era through its fashion
and music. With images by renowned photographer Sheila Rock, this
personal journey offers a sumptuous visual account including many
rare images from the photographer's archive, alongside those
originally featured in seminal publications such as The Face,
Rolling Stone and Vogue. Rock's compelling first hand narrative
shot across a decade primarily in London but also LA, San Francisco
and Tokyo, takes us to a time when the real catwalk happened on the
street; when style was the first and last word and when youth made
their own identity, culture, music and entertainment. Here are the
burgeoning roots of gender fluidity and an index of impressive
talents that bubbled out of the suburbs and art schools to energise
and invigorate a grey place with positivity and possibility. This
lavish compendium is a who's who of the artists, designers,
stylists, hairdressers, models and performers, who made the 1980s
their own. Alongside many notable stars (David Bowie, Brian Ferry,
Naomi Campbell, Judy Blame, Leigh Bowery) are documented the
equally relevant style gangs and subcultures who lived by their own
rules (New Romantics, Goths, Mods and Metal Heads) and the 'it'
hang outs and clubs (Billy's, Blitz, Le Beat Route) where a new
sensibility was created and paraded. 80s Sound and Vision is a
unique chronicle of an extraordinary time and bears witness to the
powerful explosion of imagination and innovation that shaped a
decade.
'Wonderful ... we need music in our lives now more than ever'
HERBIE HANCOCK 'Joan Koenig is on a wonderful mission to enrich

of music and use it to supercharge early childhood development.

ago, Joan Koenig has led a global movement to improve children's
lives and minds with the transformative power of music. With a
curriculum and philosophy drawn from cutting-edge science, L'Ecole
Koenig has educated and empowered even the youngest students. From

who nourishes her empathy, creativity, and memory, while practising
music from other cultures. In The Musical Child, Koenig shares
stories from her classrooms, along with tips about how to use the
latest research during these critical years, when children are most
sensitive to musical exposure-and most receptive to its benefits. A
gift for parents, caregivers, musicians, and educators, The Musical

‘Whatever I did, at least I meant it . . .’ Gary Moore White
Knuckles chronicles the personal and professional journey of one of
rock’s most influential musicians: Gary Moore. Born in Belfast
and rising to conquer some of the world’s biggest stages, the
guitarist-singer-songwriter enjoyed spells with the likes of rock
giants Thin Lizzy before becoming a successful solo artist in his
own right. Moore’s solo career spanned three decades and millions
of album sales until his untimely passing in 2011. Balancing
biography with a critical analysis of Moore’s songs and guitar
style, White Knuckles explores the evolution of Gary Moore’s
music, from progressive rock and jazz fusion to metal and pure
blues. It also examines his friendships and artistic collaborations
with the likes of George Harrison, Philip Lynott, Peter Green, Rory
Gallagher, Cream’s Jack Bruce and many more. Based on interviews
with Moore’s friends, colleagues and fellow musicians, this
definitive work catalogues the life and oeuvre of a true legend.
With a foreword by Paul McCartney 'It's semi-devotional -- a really
special place' Florence Welch 'There are certain things that are
mythical. Abbey Road is mythical' Nile Rodgers Many people will
recognise the famous zebra crossing. Some visitors may have
graffitied their name on its hallowed outer walls. Others might
even have managed to penetrate the iron gates. But what draws in
these thousands of fans here, year after year? What is it that
really happens behind the doors of the most celebrated recording
studio in the world? It may have begun life as an affluent suburban
house, but it soon became a creative hub renowned around the world
as a place where great music, ground-breaking sounds and
unforgettable tunes were forged - nothing less than a witness to,
and a key participant in, the history of popular music itself. What
has been going on there for over ninety years has called for skills
that are musical, creative, technical, mechanical, interpersonal,
logistical, managerial, chemical and, romantics might be tempted
add, close to magic. This is for the people who believe in the
magic.

Since Dylan went electric, listening to rock 'n' roll has often
been a surprisingly literary experience, and contemporary
literature is curiously attuned to the history and beat of popular
music. In The Ink in the Grooves, Florence Dore brings together a
remarkable array of acclaimed novelists, musicians, and music
writers to explore the provocatively creative relationship between
musical and literary inspiration: the vitality that writers draw
from a three-minute blast of guitars and the poetic insights that
musicians find in literary works from Shakespeare to Southern
Gothic. Together, the essays and interviews in The Ink in the
Grooves provide a backstage pass to the creative processes behind
some of the most exciting and influential albums and novels of our
time. Contributors: Laura Cantrell, Michael Chabon, Roddy Doyle,
Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, William Ferris, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon
Giddens, Dave Grohl, Peter Guralnick, Amy Helm, Randall Kenan,

From 1976 to 1978, the young photographer Simon Barker was a member
of the "Bromley Contingent"--a group of avid Sex Pistols fans who
comprised the group's inner circle at the height of the punk
movement. Many of them, such as Jordan and Siouxsie Sioux, were
notorious for their daredevil dress sense, and several--such as
Sioux, Steven Severin, Adam Ant, Poly Styrene, Billy Idol, Viv
Albertine and Ari Up--went on to form some of the most important
bands of the era. This compilation of previously unseen photographs
by Barker shows these founders of punk in their earliest
incarnations--in bedrooms and kitchens, at public gigs and private
parties--before media and commerce sunk their claws into punk's
iconoclastic look and class politics. Taken with the simplest and
cheapest pocket cameras, the photographs in this collection
constitute Barker's "family album for the years 1976 to 1978." In
the spirit of the Pistols' "God Save the Queen," the volume closes
with a photographic sequence taken by Barker during the 1976
Jubilee celebrations, which shows Romanian tyrant Nicolae Ceausescu
hobnobbing with the Queen of England in the royal procession.
It seems excessive…but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
The mass of black curls. The top hat. The cigarette dangling from
pouty lips. These are the trademarks of one of the world’s
greatest and most revered guitarists, a celebrity musician known by
one name: Slash. Saul “Slash” Hudson was born in Hampstead to a
Jewish father and a black American mother who created David
Bowie’s look in The Man Who Fell to Earth. He was raised in Stoke
until he was 11, when he and his mother moved to LA. Frequent
visitors to the house were David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Wood
and Iggy Pop. At this time Slash got into BMX bikes and would
eventually turn professional, winning major awards and money, but
at 15 his grandmother gave him his first guitar. Sessions with
numerous local LA rock bands followed until a fateful meeting with
singer W Axl Rose…and the rest was rock history. Guns N’ Roses
spent two years builiding their reputation before Appetite for
Destruction was unleashed on an unsuspecting world. Chart success
and global domination followed but with it came the inevitable fall
– addicted to heroin, booze and cigarettes the band imploded in a
rift between Axl and Slash that is as deep today as ever. But with
a new wife, kids and new band Velvet Revolver, Slash is back on
track. As raucous and edgy as his music, Slash sets the record
straight and tells the real story as only Slash can.
John Lenwood McLean - sugar free saxophonist from Sugar Hill,
Harlem - is widely known as one of the finest, most consistent
soloists in jazz history. From early in his career Jackie's
powerful, unsentimental, sometimes astringent sound and inventive
style made audiences and critics sit up and listen. Steeped in -
but eventually moving well beyond - the influence of his mentor and
friend Charlie Parker, he built an attractive, instantly
recognisable musical personality. As author Derek Ansell says, his
career trajectory is far from the typical jazz story of the tragic
artist in which early brilliance leads to later decline. McLean's
story is one of glorious triumph over the drug addiction that
affected so many of his friends and might have destroyed him. Able
to produce uniformly fine recordings through the darkest periods of
his personal life, he saw his reputation as a musician steadily
grow and became not only a living legend as an improviser but a
much respected educator whose students carry on his legacy.
Fortunately, McLean's discography is large and Derek Ansell is a
surefooted guide through the recordings, presenting them in the
context in which they were made and indicating the special gems
among a vast body of recorded work that is one of jazz's greatest
treasures.
