Fairy stories, especially from the rich tradition of Ireland where
the supernatural grew from the legends of the Celts, are the magic
stories of everyday folk seeking solutions to the challenges of the
day. This spritely new collection brings together the fables and
stories of banshees, kings, trembling farmers, tricksters and
beloved princesses. 'Smallhead and the King's Sons' (a Cinderella
story) and 'The Haughty Princess' (recalling Grimm's 'Kings
Thrushbeard') are amongst the many delightful tales of hope and
reckless determination. Fairy tales bring the myths of ancient
times into the Victorian and Modern eras, where superstition and
the supernatural still exist. Rooted in the past, such fairy
stories bring morals and lessons for the young, and wise words for
the old. They are a reminder of the power of the natural world and
offer suggestions for our inner fears of the dark and the shadows.
These tales provide a link between the myths and legends of the
Celts, and the modern tales of dark monsters, of vampires and
bewitchment, of the dark voices hidden in the earth, and the stars.

Beowulf is an epic poem probably written in the 900s CE. It tells
of events 600 years before in vivid detail, where the hero Beowulf
is entreated to help a king defend his halls against the monster
Grendel. The poem was written in old English, about a hero of the
Goths (the early Swedish people) who came to help the King of the
Danes. Its vivid accounts bear some historical evidence, and served
to influence heroic literature of Europe and the modern era. FLAME

This smart new paperback edition contains the fully-reset text of
three medieval English poems, translated by Tolkien for the
modern-day reader and containing romance, tragedy, love, sex and
honour. It features a beautifully decorated text and includes as a
bonus the complete version of Tolkien's acclaimed lecture on Sir
Gawain. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl are two poems by
an unknown author written in about 1400. Sir Gawain is a romance, a
fairy-tale for adults, full of life and colour; but it is also much
more than this, being at the same time a powerful moral tale which
examines religious and social values. Pearl is apparently an elegy
on the death of a child, a poem pervaded with a sense of great
personal loss: but, like Gawain it is also a sophisticated and
moving debate on much less tangible matters. Sir Orfeo is a
slighter romance, belonging to an earlier and different tradition.
It was a special favourite of Tolkien's. The three translations
represent the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the
originals, and are uniquely accompanied with the complete text of
Tolkien's acclaimed 1953 W.P. Ker Memorial Lecture that he
delivered on Sir Gawain.
The Greek myths are among the world's most important cultural building
blocks and they have been retold many times, but rarely do they focus
on the remarkable women at the heart of these ancient stories.
Stories of gods and monsters are the mainstay of epic poetry and Greek
tragedy, from Homer to Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, from the
Trojan War to Jason and the Argonauts. And still, today, a wealth of
novels, plays and films draw their inspiration from stories first told
almost three thousand years ago. But modern tellers of Greek myth have
usually been men, and have routinely shown little interest in telling
women’s stories. And when they do, those women are often painted as
monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil. But Pandora – the first woman,
who according to legend unloosed chaos upon the world – was not a
villain, and even Medea and Phaedra have more nuanced stories than
generations of retellings might indicate.
Now, in Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths, Natalie Haynes –
broadcaster, writer and passionate classicist – redresses this
imbalance. Taking Pandora and her jar (the box came later) as the
starting point, she puts the women of the Greek myths on equal footing
with the menfolk. After millennia of stories telling of gods and men,
be they Zeus or Agamemnon, Paris or Odysseus, Oedipus or Jason, the
voices that sing from these pages are those of Hera, Athena and
Artemis, and of Clytemnestra, Jocasta, Eurydice and Penelope.

Set during the 19th century, Tribes of Norland (The lost summer) is
a gripping adventure. In a land of gods, warriors, and dark forces,
The evil Gingo tribe has joined forces with the Zastics, and with
the help of a mind controlling yellow powder crumbled from stones
embedded in the walls of caves, the two seek to return to the old
days, when they ruled over the lowlands from the top of the
mountain. But to open the sealed cave that holds these powerful
stones, the Gingo need a secret code imprinted on Marcus'
grandfather's arm since birth. Accompanied by Oulu, a teenage girl,
and a Senja warrior, Marcus sets out on a mission to rescue his
grandparents from the tribesmen. The trio journeys through the
forests, across the lowlands, through the pass, to the top of the
Norland Mountains, where the Gingo and the Zastics are preparing to
hatch their plan for domination. Will Marcus and his comrades
succeed in halting them and freeing his grandparents from their
evil clutches?
