'No one is better . . . eden sees Crace at the top of his game' -
Telegraph Trouble has come to the garden. Its inhabitants live an
eternal and unblemished life, tending to the bountiful fields,
orchards and lakes, and serving their angelic masters. But now one
of the gardeners has escaped, breaching the walls and making her
way into the world beyond; a land of poverty, sickness and death -
as well as liberty. The angels know there are those who would go to
the ends of the earth to find her. Perhaps another fall is coming .
. . 'Vivid and poetic . . . Crace writes with great flair and
inimitable imagination' - Financial Times 'Since announcing his
retirement in 2013, Jim Crace has had more comebacks than Kanye
West, something for which we should all be thankful' - Spectator
Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus
flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the
snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the
Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of human
imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human
desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the
night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of
light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we
owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath,
award-winning astronomy writer and popularizer, has been intrigued
by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Tales is the first
modern guide to combine all the fascinating myths in one book,
illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of
the leading star atlases: Johann Bode's Uranographia of 1801 and
John Flamsteed's Atlas Coelestis of 1729. This classic book, now in
a revised and expanded edition, presents additional information on
the constellations with new and enchanting illustrations. For
anyone interested in the stars and classical mythology, for anyone
who is an armchair astronomer, this is the perfect gift.
Populated by gods, High Kings, wilfull Queens, noble warriors,
fairies, goblins and wizards, the Celtic myths are unsurpassed in
their variety and power. This new book is a dazzling collection of
the most gripping Celtic tales, vividly retold, gathering together
the legends and sagas of this ancient culture in a tribute to the
heroism, romance and mystery of the Celtic people. FLAME TREE 451:
From mystery to crime, supernatural to horror and myth, fantasy and
science fiction, Flame Tree 451 offers a healthy diet of werewolves
and mechanical men, blood-lusty vampires, dastardly villains, mad
scientists, secret worlds, lost civilizations and escapist
fantasies. Discover a storehouse of tales gathered specifically for

"The books line up on my shelf like bright Bodhisattvas ready to
take tough questions or keep quiet company. They stake out a vast
territory, with works from two millennia in multiple genres:
aphorism, lyric, epic, theater, and romance."
--Willis G. Regier, "The Chronicle Review"
"No effort has been spared to make these little volumes as
attractive as possible to readers: the paper is of high quality,
the typesetting immaculate. The founders of the series are John and
Jennifer Clay, and Sanskritists can only thank them for an
initiative intended to make the classics of an ancient Indian
language accessible to a modern international audience."
--"The Times Higher Education Supplement"
"The Clay Sanskrit Library represents one of the most admirable
publishing projects now afoot. . . . Anyone who loves the look and
feel and heft of books will delight in these elegant little
volumes."
--"New Criterion"
"Published in the geek-chic format."
--"BookForum"
"Very few collections of Sanskrit deep enough for research are
housed anywhere in North America. Now, twenty-five hundred years
after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, the ambitious Clay Sanskrit
Library may remedy this state of affairs."
--"Tricycle"
aNow an ambitious new publishing project, the Clay Sanskrit
Library brings together leading Sanskrit translators and scholars
of Indology from around the world to celebrate in translating the
beauty and range of classical Sanskrit literature. . . . Published
as smart green hardbacks that are small enough to fit into a jeans
pocket, the volumes are meant to satisfy both the scholar and the
lay reader. Each volume has a transliteration of the original
Sanskrit texton the left-hand page and an English translation on
the right, as also a helpful introduction and notes. Alongside
definitive translations of the great Indian epics -- 30 or so
volumes will be devoted to the Maha-bharat itself -- Clay Sanskrit
Library makes available to the English-speaking reader many other
delights: The earthy verse of Bhartri-hari, the pungent satire of
Jayanta Bhatta and the roving narratives of Dandin, among others.
All these writers belong properly not just to Indian literature,
but to world literature.a
--"LiveMint"
aThe Clay Sanskrit Library has recently set out to change the
scene by making available well-translated dual-language (English
and Sanskrit) editions of popular Sanskritic texts for the
public.a
--"Namarupa"
In India's great epic the Maha-bharata, the eighth book, aKarna,
a recounts the events that occurred during the mighty hero Karna's
two days as general of the Kaurava army. This second volume resumes
on the war's seventeenth and penultimate day. This will be a
momentous day for the Bharata clans and especially for a number of
their most distinguished heroes, with some of the epic's most
telegraphed events reaching their climax. Not only will the epic's
most anticipated duel between its greatest champions Arjuna and
Karna be played out to its cruel and tragic end, but one of the
more gruesome episodes in the epic will also take place with
Duhshasana meeting the fate that has long waited him since his
brazen maltreatment of Draupadi in the assembly hall.

Legends of Maui (1910) is a collection of Hawaiian folktales and
myths anthologized by W. D. Westervelt. Paying homage to the
importance of Maui across Polynesian cultures, Westervelt
introduces his groundbreaking collection of legends on Hawaii's
founding deity. Westervelt's collection connects the origin story
of Hawaii to the traditions of other Polynesian cultures, providing
an invaluable resource for understanding the historical and
geographical scope of Hawaiian culture. Drawing on the work of
David Malo, Samuel Kamakau, and Abraham Fornander, Westervelt,
originally from Ohio, became a leading authority on the Hawaiian
Islands, publishing extensively on their legends, religious
beliefs, and folk tales. With a beautifully designed cover and
professionally designed manuscript, this edition of W. D.
Westervelt's Legends of Maui is a classic of Hawaiian literature
reimagined for modern readers.
The next few seconds seemed to be played out in slow motion.
Achmaed couldn't avoid the collision, but he did manage to turn
enough so that the container occupied the space between him and the
two onrushing antagonists. They slammed hard into its surface,
driving Achmaed backwards and loosening his grip on the package.
The container twisted in the air and smashed against the edge of
the yacht yielding a loud cracking noise. Before anyone involved in
the scuffle could react, the container popped open and a Grecian
urn, which had been its contents, flew out, rolling end over end in
the air like a large football. Achmaed felt himself gasping
involuntarily as the priceless piece of antiquity smashed against
one of the sizeable steel spars that projected from the side of the
Aquarius. It was the last Achmaed would see of Asan's prized
treasure. The gritty contents of the urn sprayed into the air as
the urn split into a thousand pieces. Achmaed watched with his last
moment of consciousness as the debris spread into the air like a
flock of migrating birds and then fell into the waters of the
Aegean Sea.
