Oilfields and Airpower in African Conflict - The Case of Biafra (Hardcover): Onianwa Oluchukwu Ignatus Oilfields and Airpower in African Conflict - The Case of Biafra (Hardcover)
Onianwa Oluchukwu Ignatus
R3,770 Discovery Miles 37 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this intrepid study, noted Nigerian historian Onianwa Oluchukwu Ignatus investigates the air war component of the Nigerian-Biafran War, a crucial postcolonial conflict in Africa. It focuses on the Biafra's air operations against oil installations and facilities owned by multinational oil companies in Nigeria. In addition to exploring global airpower historiography, this study explores the tactical aspects of how the renewed air war changed the military equation of the conflict when both sides were at loggerheads in peace settlement and relief arrangements. This episode was important in postcolonial military history of Africa, when modern air weapons were developed at the local level for offensive military capability. While the air operations of the Biafrans were sporadic yet destructive, they caused considerable damage to public utilities in Nigeria. Internally, the air attacks paved the way for internal disturbances in the oil producing areas by damaging oil companies' activities and the reducing foreign investment. Externally, it caused a loss of confidence in Nigeria. The Biafran air offensive proved to be the key strategy in Nigeria's response to the crisis, which focused on neutralizing Biafran airpower.

Petrocinema - Sponsored Film and the Oil Industry (Hardcover): Marina Dahlquist, Patrick Vonderau Petrocinema - Sponsored Film and the Oil Industry (Hardcover)
Marina Dahlquist, Patrick Vonderau
R4,050 Discovery Miles 40 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Petrocinema presents a collection of essays concerning the close relationship between the oil industry and modern media-especially film. Since the early 1920s, oil extracting companies such as Standard Oil, Royal Dutch/Shell, ConocoPhillips, or Statoil have been producing and circulating moving images for various purposes including research and training, safety, process observation, or promotion. Such industrial and sponsored films include documentaries, educationals, and commercials that formed part of a larger cultural project to transform the image of oil exploitation, creating media interfaces that would allow corporations to coordinate their goals with broader cultural and societal concerns. Falling outside of the domain of conventional cinema, such films firmly belong to an emerging canon of sponsored and educational film and media that has developed over the past decade. Contributing to this burgeoning field of sponsored and educational film scholarship, chapters in this book bear on the intersecting cultural histories of oil extraction and media history by looking closely at moving image imaginaries of the oil industry, from the earliest origins or "spills" in the 20th century to today's post industrial "petromelancholia."

Economics at the Wheel - The Costs of Cars and Drivers (Hardcover): Richard C. Porter Economics at the Wheel - The Costs of Cars and Drivers (Hardcover)
Richard C. Porter
R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Economics at the Wheel" is about cars and driving, and all the problems that cars and drivers create for America. It explains actual government policy intended to reduce the damage cars and drivers do to us, and it explains why these government policies are almost all failures because they attack the wrong problem or attack it in the wrong way. The reader will come away with a much fuller understanding of air pollution, global warming, highway safety, auto insurance, gasoline taxation, rush-hour congestion, leaking underground storage tanks, and many other auto-related issues. It looks at common actions and circumstances from an economics perspective. It is readable with accessible prose style and few footnotes. It includes questions to provoke student thinking and boxed sections of side materials to stimulate discussions.

Supply and Costs in the U.S. Petroleum Industry (Routledge Revivals) - Two Econometric Studies (Hardcover): Franklin M. Fisher Supply and Costs in the U.S. Petroleum Industry (Routledge Revivals) - Two Econometric Studies (Hardcover)
Franklin M. Fisher
R1,578 Discovery Miles 15 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Any discussion of the various facets of petroleum policy in the United States rests to a greater or less extent on the issue of sensitivity of petroleum exploration, and hence of new petroleum discoveries to economic incentives. Indeed, a principle argument in favour of having a special petroleum policy at all is that domestic petroleum exploration is so sensitive to economic considerations that in the absence of special incentives exploration expenditures would sharply decrease, as would the amount of petroleum discovered; consequently, the nation's known oil resources would be reduced to an extent dangerous in the event of an international crisis. This study attempts to answer the question: how sensitive are new petroleum discoveries to economic incentives? This book will be of interest to students of environmental studies.

Arab Oil Policies in the 1970s (RLE Economy of Middle East) - Opportunity and Responsibility (Hardcover): Yusuf A. Sayigh Arab Oil Policies in the 1970s (RLE Economy of Middle East) - Opportunity and Responsibility (Hardcover)
Yusuf A. Sayigh
R2,848 Discovery Miles 28 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until 1973 few people, either in the advanced, industrial countries or in the developing countries of the Third World, thought seriously on the issues and complexities involved in the production and marketing of the oil on which they relied. It was only with the sudden steep increases in oil prices that the oil industry became a matter of general discussion, and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) became a front page topic for analysis and comment. However, real understanding of the organisation and its policies did not accompany this rush of interest and much confusion has followed. In particular, the Arab exporters have received the weight of the criticism although they have only a share in the market and not a monopoly. This book attempts to instil a greater mutual understanding between oil exporters and importers, although it is not a wholesale endorsement of Arab policies, by outlining the major policy areas in this field. It looks at new policy options and their implications in exploration, marketing and pricing and at downstream operations such as the petrochemical and gas industries. In conclusion, this study identifies the wide-ranging opportunities that the new oil policies have opened up for the Arab countries, in the national, regional and international context, and assesses and clarifies the responsibilities which accompany this success.

Oil, Turmoil, and Islam in the Middle East (Hardcover): Nazma Ali Oil, Turmoil, and Islam in the Middle East (Hardcover)
Nazma Ali
R2,659 Discovery Miles 26 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The turmoil and strife of the Middle East raises serious questions about the security of the world's oil supply. "Oil, Turmoil, and Islam in the Middle East" is a hard-hitting indictment of OPEC and OAPEC, arguing that these organizations can no longer afford to impose indiscriminate price increases on the marketplace because they hurt not only themselves but oil poor Third World nations, as well. The author analyzes the importance of Middle Eastern oil in world politics. He emphasizes that any consideration of the forces influencing development in the Middle East should take Islamic tradition into account. Each chapter is organized around a current Middle Eastern problem: oil politics in relation to international energy needs; the ramifications of the new oil wealth and power of the Middle East; the Iran-Iraq War; Muslim insurgency in Afghanistan; the Arab-Israeli conflict; turmoil in Lebanon; Palestinian nationalism; and the Middle East as a superpower.

Oil and Gas in the Disputed Kurdish Territories - Jurisprudence, Regional Minorities and Natural Resources in a Federal System... Oil and Gas in the Disputed Kurdish Territories - Jurisprudence, Regional Minorities and Natural Resources in a Federal System (Hardcover)
Rex J. Zedalis
R4,788 Discovery Miles 47 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the historical and contextual background to the oil and gas resources in the Kurdish territories, placing particular emphasis on the reserves situated in the disputed provinces. The volume is singularly unique in focusing on an examination of the rules reflected in both the national and the regional constitutional, legislative, and contractual measures and documents relevant to the question of whether the central government in Baghdad or the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in Erbil has a stronger claim to legal control over the oil and gas resources in the disputed Kurdish territories. As a subsidiary focus, the author also draws attention to how the basic thrust of the volume connects to broader jurisprudential issues regarding the nature and purpose of law, the matter of claims by native peoples to natural resources on traditional lands, and the place of regional minorities operating in a federal system. Since the law examined is domestic or municipal in origin, additional reference is made to the role that such law can play in the "bottom up" (as opposed to more conventional "top down") development of international law. The book's opening chapters provide a valuable contextual introduction, followed by a number of substantive chapters providing an analytical and critical assessment of the controlling legal rules. Written in a scholarly, yet accessible style, and covering matters of basic importance to academics, lawyers, political scientists, government representatives, and students of energy and natural resources, as well as those of developing legal structures, Oil and Gas in the Disputed Kurdish Territories is an essential addition to any collection.

Nigeria at Fifty - The Nation in Narration (Hardcover): Ebenezer Obadare, Wale Adebanwi Nigeria at Fifty - The Nation in Narration (Hardcover)
Ebenezer Obadare, Wale Adebanwi
R3,642 Discovery Miles 36 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nigeria, Africa's most populous and biggest democracy, celebrates her fiftieth year as an independent nation in October 2010. As the cliche states, 'As Nigeria goes, so goes Africa'. This book frames the socio-historical and political trajectory of Nigeria while examining the many dimensions of the critical choices that she has made as an independent nation. How does the social composition of interest and power illuminate the actualities and narratives of the Nigerian crisis? How have the choices made by Nigerian leaders structured, and/or have been structured by, the character of the Nigerian state and state-society relations? In what ways is Nigeria's mono-product, debt-ridden, dependent economy fed by 'the politics of plunder'? And what are the implications of these questions for the structural relationships of production, reproduction and consumption? This book confronts these questions by making state-centric approaches to understanding African countries speak to relevant social theories that pluralize and complicate our understanding of the specific challenges of a prototypical postcolonial state. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Finders Keepers? - How the Law of Capture Shaped the World Oil Industry (Hardcover): Terence Daintith Finders Keepers? - How the Law of Capture Shaped the World Oil Industry (Hardcover)
Terence Daintith
R5,178 Discovery Miles 51 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the beginnings of the oil industry, production activity has been governed by the 'law of capture,' dictating that one owns the oil recovered from one's property even if it has migrated from under neighboring land. This 'finders keepers' principle has been excoriated by foreign critics as a 'law of the jungle' and identified by American commentators as the root cause of the enormous waste of oil and gas resulting from US production methods in the first half of the twentieth century. Yet while in almost every other country the law of capture is today of marginal significance, it continues in full vigour in the United States, with potentially wasteful results. In this richly documented account, Terence Daintith adopts a historical and comparative perspective to show how legal rules, technical knowledge (or the lack of it) and political ideas combined to shape attitudes and behavior in the business of oil production, leading to the original adoption of the law of capture, its consolidation in the United States, and its marginalization elsewhere.

Corrosion and Materials Selection - A Guide for the Chemical and Petroleum Industries (Hardcover): A Bahadori Corrosion and Materials Selection - A Guide for the Chemical and Petroleum Industries (Hardcover)
A Bahadori
R4,915 Discovery Miles 49 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The petroleum and chemical industries contain a wide variety of corrosive environments, many of which are unique to these industries. Oil and gas production operations consume a tremendous amount of iron and steel pipe, tubing, pumps, valves, and sucker rods. Metallic corrosion is costly. However, the cost of corrosion is not just financial. Beyond the huge direct outlay of funds to repair or replace corroded structures are the indirect costs natural resources, potential hazards, and lost opportunity. Wasting natural resources is a direct contradiction to the growing need for sustainable development. By selecting the correct material and applying proper corrosion protection methods, these costs can be reduced, or even eliminated. This book provides a minimum design requirement for consideration when designing systems in order to prevent or control corrosion damage safely and economically, and addresses: Corrosion problems in petroleum and chemical industries Requirements for corrosion control Chemical control of corrosive environments Corrosion inhibitors in refineries and petrochemical plants Materials selection and service life of materials Surface preparation, protection and maintainability Corrosion monitoring - plant inspection techniques and laboratory corrosion testing techniques Intended for engineers and industry personnel working in the petroleum and chemical industries, this book is also a valuable resource for research and development teams, safety engineers, corrosion specialists and researchers in chemical engineering, engineering and materials science.

The New Economy of Oil - Impacts on Business, Geopolitics and Society. (Paperback, Revised): Norman Selley The New Economy of Oil - Impacts on Business, Geopolitics and Society. (Paperback, Revised)
Norman Selley; Edited by John Mitchel, Jonathan Stern, Koji Morita
R1,633 Discovery Miles 16 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An analysis of the condition of the oil industry at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that the chief concern of the industry over the next couple of decades will not be its availability but its acceptability. Having dominated the 20th century, playing a crucial role in industrial development, oil now faces an unprecedented series of challenges: as a major polluter, it faces competition from other energy sources - gas and renewables - and ever more stringent regulation and control, with higher taxes. Faced with these pressures, the oil companies are repositioning themselves as energy industries - and oil is certain to have a diminishing share in their portfolio of fuels.;The implications are enormous, given the current dependence on oil of so much industry and government revenue. This book should be useful to all those involved with oil, from industry professionals to competitors, commentators, investors, managers, politicians and regulators, as well as more general readers.

40 Classic Crude Oil Trades - Real-Life Examples of Innovative Trading (Paperback): Owain Johnson 40 Classic Crude Oil Trades - Real-Life Examples of Innovative Trading (Paperback)
Owain Johnson
R1,607 Discovery Miles 16 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Some of the trades covered in the book are well known but most are only known to a small group or to market specialists. The ability to 'see into' actual trades offers a fascinating and unprecedented insight for those interested in the oil markets and gives the book broad appeal. The book can be used as an educational reference work by market participants and as a more general guide to how the crude oil market operates and the strategies that traders employ. There are very academic books about the theory of trading but nothing that directly covers real-life examples of innovative and winning trades, each of which illuminate a different aspect of trading or a different era in the oil markets. The presentation of each individual trade has been designed so that they can be used as case studies by business schools.

Fundamentals of Petroleum Trading (Hardcover): Hossein Razavi, Fereidun Fesharaki Fundamentals of Petroleum Trading (Hardcover)
Hossein Razavi, Fereidun Fesharaki
R2,659 Discovery Miles 26 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until as recently as the late 1970s, the main channel for oil distribution was the integrated system of the major oil companies, while the volume of spot trading was limited to roughly 5 percent of the total oil trade. Today, spot and spot-related deals account for 80 to 85 percent of internationally traded petroleum, and have ushered in a new era of petroleum trading. In this work, Hossein Razavi and Fereidun Fesharaki offer a detailed study of the workings and issues surrounding today's oil trading market as they apply to all parties involved in the production, distribution, and consumption of petroleum. They provide a complete description of petroleum spot markets, futures, and options trading, and their interlinkages with contract sales.

Razavi and Fesharaki cover a wide range of topics, and challenge the generally accepted view that spot and futures trading have wrested the power of price setting away from OPEC. They claim that prices are still determined by supply, which OPEC continues to influence. The book is divided into four sections, beginning with an overview of recent developments in spot, futures, and contract trading. Section two provides an analysis of spot and spot-related deals, while the third section describes the mechanics, organization, and evolution of petroleum futures markets and options trading. The work concludes with an in-depth section on interlinkages, examining the interactions among various segments of the market, including spot and futures trading, petroleum stock building, and OPEC. This book will be a valuable resource tool for libraries as well as a wide range of users, from oil industry professionals and financial analysts to students of energy-related topics.
