Planning After Petroleum - Preparing Cities for the Age Beyond Oil (Hardcover): Jago Dodson, Neil Sipe, Anitra Nelson Planning After Petroleum - Preparing Cities for the Age Beyond Oil (Hardcover)
Jago Dodson, Neil Sipe, Anitra Nelson
R3,584 Discovery Miles 35 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The past decade has been one of the most volatile periods in global petroleum markets in living memory, and future oil supply security and price levels remain highly uncertain. This poses many questions for the professional activities of planners and urbanists because contemporary cities are highly dependent on petroleum as a transport fuel. How will oil dependent cities respond, and adapt to, the changing pattern of petroleum supplies? What key strategies should planners and policy makers implement in petroleum vulnerable cities to address the challenges of moving beyond oil? How might a shift away from petroleum provide opportunities to improve or remake cities for the economic, social and environmental imperatives of twenty-first-century sustainability? Such questions are the focus of contributors to this book with perspectives ranging across the planning challenge: overarching petroleum futures, governance, transition and climate change questions, the role of various urban transport nodes and household responses, ways of measuring oil vulnerability, and the effects on telecommunications, ports and other urban infrastructure. This comprehensive volume - with contributions from and focusing on cities in Australia, the UK, the US, France, Germany, the Netherlands and South Korea - provides key insights to enable cities to plan for the age beyond petroleum.

Routledge Revivals: A Failed Strategy (1993) - The Offshore Oil Industry's Development of the Outer Contintental Shelf... Routledge Revivals: A Failed Strategy (1993) - The Offshore Oil Industry's Development of the Outer Contintental Shelf (Hardcover)
Geoffrey C. Laendner
R2,826 Discovery Miles 28 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First published in 1993, this book traces and analyses the changing policies of American offshore oil companies concerning the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf in the period from 1970 to 1976 - covering environmental legislation, the oil embargo, presidential initiatives, and proposed international laws. Where previous studies concerning the Outer Continental Shelf had only examined broad policy issues on an international level, this study focuses on those American offshore companies who were major actors in ocean affairs, especially in the exploration and development of the region.

Oil and Security in the Arabian Gulf (Hardcover): Abdel Majid Farid Oil and Security in the Arabian Gulf (Hardcover)
Abdel Majid Farid
R4,020 Discovery Miles 40 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The issue of security in the Gulf has an importance which goes far beyond the regional location of the area. It is enough to note that instability in the area may result in the interruption of oil supplies to the rest of the world. This book, first published in 1981, considers some of the challenges facing the region following recent developments such as the fall of the Shah and the proclamation of the Islamic Republic in Iran, the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, the formation of an American task force to intervene in the area, the failure of the Camp David agreement and the Iran-Iraq war.

Supply and Costs in the U.S. Petroleum Industry (Routledge Revivals) - Two Econometric Studies (Paperback): Franklin M. Fisher Supply and Costs in the U.S. Petroleum Industry (Routledge Revivals) - Two Econometric Studies (Paperback)
Franklin M. Fisher
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Any discussion of the various facets of petroleum policy in the United States rests to a greater or less extent on the issue of sensitivity of petroleum exploration, and hence of new petroleum discoveries to economic incentives. Indeed, a principle argument in favour of having a special petroleum policy at all is that domestic petroleum exploration is so sensitive to economic considerations that in the absence of special incentives exploration expenditures would sharply decrease, as would the amount of petroleum discovered; consequently, the nation's known oil resources would be reduced to an extent dangerous in the event of an international crisis. This study attempts to answer the question: how sensitive are new petroleum discoveries to economic incentives? This book will be of interest to students of environmental studies.

The Third Oil Shock (Routledge Revivals) - The Effects of Lower Oil Prices (Hardcover): Joan Pearce The Third Oil Shock (Routledge Revivals) - The Effects of Lower Oil Prices (Hardcover)
Joan Pearce
R3,569 Discovery Miles 35 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First published in 1983, this book a number of collects the essays about the effects of a sustained period of low oil prices. The opening chapter describes how oil prices have impinged on other elements of the economy and assesses the costs and benefits, in the short and long term, of low prices. The following three chapters deal with different groups of countries and indicate clearly that for none of them do lower oil prices have unequivocally positive or negative effects - a situation examined in the chapter on the international financial system. The last three chapters analyse the shifts lower prices are likely to produce in relations among the groups closely involved in the oil market.

The Dilemma of Development in the Arabian Peninsula (Hardcover): Abdul Rahman Osama The Dilemma of Development in the Arabian Peninsula (Hardcover)
Abdul Rahman Osama
R4,477 Discovery Miles 44 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, first published in 1987 and by one of Saudi Arabia's most distinguished academics, reviews the experience of the Arab oil producers in social, economic and political development in the key period of the Seventies and Eighties. It is broadly pessimistic about the prospects for future development and sceptical about past achievements. It argues that the 'petro-bureaucracy' in the Arabian Peninsula has failed to establish the basic principles of effective development because it has been mesmerised by the vast oil revenues it has attempted to administer. The book suggests that in many respects the oil revenues have obstructed serious development because they have made the Arabian economies totally dependent on one expendable resource and this has made them too vulnerable to external pressures and interests. Furthermore, the oil revenues have encouraged fantasy and wishful thinking which have skewed the development process and stimulated pseudo-development. The book makes clear that until the petro-bureaucracy adopts a realistic approach to development there can be no prospect of real development in the Arabian Peninsula.

Oil and the British Economy (Hardcover): Stephen Hall, Fred Atkinson Oil and the British Economy (Hardcover)
Stephen Hall, Fred Atkinson
R1,084 Discovery Miles 10 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The impact of North Sea oil and gas on the British economy is examined thoroughly in this book. It explores why the early years of the 1980s, when oil production had risen to the level of self-sufficiency and beyond were years of recession and unemployment. The book compares the record of British government policy with that of Norway, the Netherlands, Venezuela, Australia and Japan. Issues such as long - term energy policy are also examined.

OPEC Behaviour and World Oil Prices (Hardcover): James M. Griffin, David J. Teece OPEC Behaviour and World Oil Prices (Hardcover)

Steve Isser
R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, originally published in 1996, traces the development of US government policy toward the oil industry during the 1920s and 1930s when the domestic syustem of production control was established. It then charts the deveopment and collapse of oil import controls, and the wild scramble for economic rents generated by Government regulation. It discusses the two oil crises and the 'phantom' Gulf War crisis, and the importance of public opinion in shaping the policy agenda. It also provides an in-depth study of Congressional oil votes from the 1950s to the 1980s and the formation of oil policy, beginning with theories of economic regulation, the role of interest groups in developing the policy agenda and the role of money in politics.

The Oil Companies and the Arab World (Hardcover): Giacomo Luciani The Oil Companies and the Arab World (Hardcover)
Giacomo Luciani
R4,455 Discovery Miles 44 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For many years, vertical integration characterized the international oil industry, with the same company controlling the entire process from crude exploration and production to the retailing. This structure was radically transformed in the 1970s and this book, originally published in 1984, examines whether the dis-integration which resulted was a long-term trend or a temporary phase. It examines the attitude of the major international oil companies, discusses the policies adopted by oil producing and oil importing countries, and the limits of 'government to government' deals underlined. The political and strategic implications of re-integration are explored, and relations between oil exporters and importers, and between the USA, Europe and the Arab world discussed.

It draws almost entirely on primary sources.

Economic Diversification in Nigeria - The Politics of Building a Post-Oil Economy (Hardcover): Zainab Usman Economic Diversification in Nigeria - The Politics of Building a Post-Oil Economy (Hardcover)
Zainab Usman
R3,388 Discovery Miles 33 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nigeria has for long been regarded as the poster child for the ‘curse’ of oil wealth. Due to what is regarded as an African political culture of neopatrimonialism, irreconcilable ethno-religious divisions and predatory subversion of institutions, Nigeria is seen incapable of overcoming the economic deterioration of this ‘resource curse’. Yet, Nigeria achieved strong economic growth for over a decade in the twenty first century driven largely by policy reforms in non-oil sectors. The book argues that Nigeria’s major development challenge is not an ‘oil curse’, but one of achieving economic diversification beyond oil, subsistence agriculture, informal activities and across its subnational entities. Through analysis drawing on economic data, policy documents and interviews, the book argues that Nigeria’s challenge of economic diversification is situated within a political setting of an unstable distribution of power among individual, group and institutional actors. Nigeria’s ruling elites have lurched from one political crisis to another throughout the country’s history and especially in the last two decades of democratic rule. A perpetual state of crisis management orients economic policy to be episodic rather than the systematic and long-term focus necessary to drive the economic transformation Nigeria aspires for. Since the turn of the century, policymaking by successive Nigerian governments despite superficial partisan differences has been oriented towards short-term crisis management of macroeconomic stabilization, restoring growth and selective public sector reforms. To diversify Nigeria’s economy, successive governments must reorient towards a consistent focus on: pro-productivity and pro-poor policies, alongside comprehensive civil service and security sector overhaul. These policy priorities, Nigeria’s ruling elites are belatedly acknowledging, are crucial to achieving economic transformation. However, this policy shift requires tackling the roots of perpetual political crisis, especially stabilizing the balance of power towards equity and inclusion.

The Impact of Oil Revenues on Arab Gulf Development (Hardcover): M. S. El Azhary The Impact of Oil Revenues on Arab Gulf Development (Hardcover)
M. S. El Azhary
R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As the price of oil fell in the eighties the pressures on the Arab Gulf States to speed up the diversification of their economies into non-oil sectors increased. This book, first published in 1984, examines this problem and many other issues connected with the impact of oil revenues on development in the Gulf States. It considers changing oil production policies and developments in other sectors of the economy including agriculture, industry and banking. It explores population problems, moves towards Gulf economic coordination and the impact of oil on society, culture and education. This book provides an assessment of just how much the region depends on oil for its economic prosperity and development and some indication of the enormous problems that would face the region should the demand for oil decease still further.

The Politics of Energy and Memory between the Baltic States and Russia (Paperback, New Ed): Agnia Grigas The Politics of Energy and Memory between the Baltic States and Russia (Paperback, New Ed)
Agnia Grigas
R1,317 Discovery Miles 13 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the 1990s, Baltic-Russian relations have been amongst the most contentious on the European continent. Energy security concerns, historical legacies, and the status of Russian minorities have all proved key flash points. Baltic-Russian relations have been described as a 'litmus test' of Russia's willingness to leave behind its imperialist ambitions; simultaneously the policies of Tallinn, Riga or Vilnius towards Russia can have a direct impact on EU-Russian and NATO-Russian relations. The Baltic states share similar histories and resources, and face the same geopolitical challenges. All are dependent on Russia for energy yet, as this fascinating study reveals, they have pursued very different foreign policies towards their powerful neighbour. In The Politics of Energy and Memory between the Baltic States and Russia Agnia Grigas provides an unprecedented analysis of contemporary Baltic-Russian relations and identifies the causal factors that drive the foreign policies of the Baltic states in such divergent routes. Supported by case studies on the oil and gas sectors as well as the tug of history, this book is an invaluable resource for scholars and policy makers.

The Licit Life of Capitalism - US Oil in Equatorial Guinea (Hardcover): Hannah Appel The Licit Life of Capitalism - US Oil in Equatorial Guinea (Hardcover)
Hannah Appel
R3,062 Discovery Miles 30 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Licit Life of Capitalism is both an account of a specific capitalist project-U.S. oil companies working off the shores of Equatorial Guinea-and a sweeping theorization of more general forms and processes that facilitate diverse capitalist projects around the world. Hannah Appel draws on extensive fieldwork with managers and rig workers, lawyers and bureaucrats, the expat wives of American oil executives and the Equatoguinean women who work in their homes, to turn conventional critiques of capitalism on their head, arguing that market practices do not merely exacerbate inequality; they are made by it. People and places differentially valued by gender, race, and colonial histories are the terrain on which the rules of capitalist economy are built. Appel shows how the corporate form and the contract, offshore rigs and economic theory are the assemblages of liberalism and race, expertise and gender, technology and domesticity that enable the licit life of capitalism-practices that are legally sanctioned, widely replicated, and ordinary, at the same time as they are messy, contested, and, arguably, indefensible.

Singapore, the Energy Economy - From The First Refinery To The End Of Cheap Oil, 1960-2010 (Paperback): Weng Hoong Ng Singapore, the Energy Economy - From The First Refinery To The End Of Cheap Oil, 1960-2010 (Paperback)
Weng Hoong Ng
R1,805 Discovery Miles 18 050 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Singapore might not have survived the 1960s and prospered thereafter had it not built its economy on the foundations of oil refining, trading and support for oil and gas exploration and production. Cheap oil, sound policies and strong government combined to produce the Singapore economic miracle in its first 50 years of self-rule/independence. With the end of cheap oil, how will Singapore fare and what is the relevance of its model of development for other countries? Singapore's successful launch coincided with a golden period of cheap energy, and a pro-globalization and free trade environment. These three elements are now under threat from rising energy prices and the global financial crisis which started in 2007 that will leave a lasting impact on the world's political and economic landscape. If the Singapore model is reaching or has reached its peak, what could take its place? This book poses questions for not just for Singapore planners, but also for anyone interested in modern economics and trade beyond the current era. The book also looks into the numerous subsectors within Singapore's broad energy sector and examines the energy sector's links with the other pillars of its economy: trade, financial, offshore/marine operations, manufacturing and transportation. It considers possible threats and challenges: Singapore's rising energy intensity, its vulnerability to energy supply cut-offs, the likely impact of peak oil, terrorism and environmental / climate issues. It also looks at China's growing investment and role in Singapore's oil and gas industry. The book is a must-read for an excellent insight into Singapore's energy economy, filled with data, information, interviews and analyses previously not available to the public.

Nigeria at Fifty - The Nation in Narration (Paperback): Ebenezer Obadare, Wale Adebanwi Nigeria at Fifty - The Nation in Narration (Paperback)
Ebenezer Obadare, Wale Adebanwi
R1,007 Discovery Miles 10 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nigeria, Africa's most populous and biggest democracy, celebrates her fiftieth year as an independent nation in October 2010. As the cliche states, 'As Nigeria goes, so goes Africa'. This book frames the socio-historical and political trajectory of Nigeria while examining the many dimensions of the critical choices that she has made as an independent nation. How does the social composition of interest and power illuminate the actualities and narratives of the Nigerian crisis? How have the choices made by Nigerian leaders structured, and/or have been structured by, the character of the Nigerian state and state-society relations? In what ways is Nigeria's mono-product, debt-ridden, dependent economy fed by 'the politics of plunder'? And what are the implications of these questions for the structural relationships of production, reproduction and consumption? This book confronts these questions by making state-centric approaches to understanding African countries speak to relevant social theories that pluralize and complicate our understanding of the specific challenges of a prototypical postcolonial state. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Oil and World Power (Routledge Revivals) - Background to the Oil Crisis (Hardcover): Peter O'Dell Oil and World Power (Routledge Revivals) - Background to the Oil Crisis (Hardcover)
Peter O'Dell
R5,520 Discovery Miles 55 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The oil industry is the world's largest commercial enterprise. Its extent is global; international issues are consistently influenced by considerations of oil production and consumption, while the international communications networks of the larger oil companies rival those of many nations. In this, the eighth edition of Oil and World Power, published in 1986, Peter Odell explains the complexities of this gigantic empire and its influence on the world. The far-reaching chapters discuss the U.S.A, the Soviet Union, O.P.E.C., Japan and the oil-consuming countries of the developing world. Evaluating the changing patterns of oil supply and the dramatic fall in oil prices in 1986, Odell proposes a number of forward-thinking conclusions surrounding the relationship between oil in global politics and economic development. This is an exceptionally interesting and relevant work, of great value to those with an interest in the oil industry, global power and international economic development.
