Your answer to the software project management gap The Complete Software Project Manager: From Planning to Launch and Beyond addresses an interesting problem experienced by today's project managers: they are often leading software projects, but have no background in technology. To close this gap in experience and help you improve your software project management skills, this essential text covers key topics, including: how to understand software development and why it is so difficult, how to plan a project, choose technology platforms, and develop project specifications, how to staff a project, how to develop a budget, test software development progress, and troubleshoot problems, and what to do when it all goes wrong. Real-life examples, hints, and management tools help you apply these new ideas, and lists of red flags, danger signals, and things to avoid at all costs assist in keeping your project on track. Companies have, due to the nature of the competitive environment, been somewhat forced to adopt new technologies. Oftentimes, the professionals leading the development of these technologies do not have any experience in the tech field and this can cause problems. To improve efficiency and effectiveness, this groundbreaking book offers guidance to professionals who need a crash course in software project management. * Review the basics of software project management, and dig into the more complicated topics that guide you in developing an effective management approach * Avoid common pitfalls by perusing red flags, danger signals, and things to avoid at all costs * Leverage practical roadmaps, charts, and step-by-step processes * Explore real-world examples to see effective software project management in action The Complete Software Project Manager: From Planning to Launch and Beyond is a fundamental resource for professionals who are leading software projects but do not have a background in technology.
The utility simply known as "make" is one of the most enduring features of both Unix and other operating systems. First invented in the 1970s, "make" still turns up to this day as the central engine in most programming projects; it even builds the Linux kernel. In the third edition of the classic "Managing Projects with GNU make," readers will learn why this utility continues to hold its top position in project build software, despite many younger competitors. The premise behind "make" is simple: after you change source files and want to rebuild your program or other output files, "make" checks timestamps to see what has changed and rebuilds just what you need, without wasting time rebuilding other files. But on top of this simple principle, "make" layers a rich collection of options that lets you manipulate multiple directories, build different versions of programs for different platforms, and customize your builds in other ways. This edition focuses on the GNU version of "make," which has deservedly become the industry standard. GNU make contains powerful extensions that are explored in this book. It is also popular because it is free software and provides a version for almost every platform, including a version for Microsoft Windows as part of the free Cygwin project. "Managing Projects with GNU make," 3rd Edition provides guidelines on meeting the needs of large, modern projects. Also added are a number of interesting advanced topics such as portability, parallelism, and use with Java. Robert Mecklenburg, author of the third edition, has used "make" for decades with a variety of platforms and languages. In this book he zealously lays forth how to get your builds to be asefficient as possible, reduce maintenance, avoid errors, and thoroughly understand what "make" is doing. Chapters on C++ and Java provide makefile entries optimized for projects in those languages. The author even includes a discussion of the makefile used to build the book.
In order to make strategy happen there is a need for powerful management information systems. SAP focuses on the application of modern business administration concepts, e.g. Value Based Management, the Balanced Scorecard, the Management Cockpit or flexible planning methods. The book describes the methodology and implementation of a powerful tool for enterprise management. Practical examples show how SAP Strategic Enterprise Management/Business Analytics (SAP SEM/BA) can help to improve cross functional planning, reporting and analyzing. SAP SEM/BA is a leading edge IT-solution for top management and related departments in large enterprises and groups. It demonstrates the state of the art of modern management information and decision support systems.
Emphasizing that it's much easier and more cost effective to make changes in the planning phases of a project rather than later on, Project Management Tools and Techniques for Success provides an accessible introduction to project management fundamentals. Highlighting approaches for avoiding common pitfalls, it begins with an introduction to project management that compares and contrasts the stages of poor management with those of effective management. Because change is inherent in virtually all projects, the text outlines the human effects of change and suggests ways to mitigate these effects. It addresses team dynamics, sourcing alternatives, motivating the team, managing expectations, assessing risk, and defining and prioritizing project requirements. The book translates difficult concepts into practical applications with a case study that examines the merger of two companies, along with the subsequent development of a new corporate headquarters. By adding a layer of statistical methods and tools to the front-end of a project, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) augments standard Six Sigma processes to help ensure project results meet customers' needs and that delays caused by new requirements or rework after implementation are eliminated or reduced. The book explains how to effectively incorporate DFSS tools to reduce the possibility of failure in your next project. Clearly illustrating effective project management practices, the book includes a listing of commonly used acronyms, suggestions for additional reading, along with instructions on how to create four of the most important tools discussed in the book.
You think agile techniques might be for you, but your projects and organization are unique. An "out-of-the-box" agile approach won't work. Instead, unite agile and lean principles for your project. See how to design a custom approach, reap the benefits of collaboration, and deliver value. For project managers who want to use agile techniques, managers who want to start, and technical leaders who want to know more and succeed, this book is your first step toward agile project success. You've tried to use an off-the-shelf approach to agile techniques, and it's not working. Instead of a standard method or framework, work from agile and lean principles to design your own agile approach in a way that works for you. Build collaborative, cross-functional teams. See how small batch sizes and frequent delivery create an environment of trust and transparency between the team, management, and customers. Learn about the interpersonal skills that help agile teams work together so well. In addition to seeing work and knowing what "done" means, you'll see examples of many possible team-based measurements. Look at tools you can use for status reporting, and how to use those measurements to help your managers understand what agile techniques buy them. Recognize the traps that prevent agile principles from working in too many organizations, and what to do about those traps. Use agile techniques for workgroups, and see what managers can do to create and nurture an agile culture. You might be surprised at how few meetings and rituals you need to still work in an agile way. Johanna's signature frankness and humor will get you on the right track to design your agile project to succeed. What You Need: No technical expertise or experience needed, just a desire to know more about how you might use agile in your project.

No matter what business you're in, at the end of the day, it's all about people. Workers are people, and so are managers. Every day, millions of people wake up, get dressed, and go to work. The fact that all of them do different jobs and have different levels of authority has been used for ages to divide us. The truth of the matter, however, is that we're all just trying to make a living and provide for the ones we love-and that's a powerful common bond. If you can grasp that one concept, you'll have the power to change your world for the better in ways that you never dreamed possible. When you reach people at this fundamental level-letting them know that you care about what's important to them and showing what's in it for them personally when they join forces with you-nothing is beyond your grasp. Unite the Tribes: Ending Turf Wars for Career and Business Success presents the "Ten Pillars of the Empire" for just this purpose. You don't have to become a great charismatic leader to make them work. Each pillar speaks to you as an individual employee and shows you how to improve both your career and the company's bottom line in a practical and organized manner. These principles and tactics are designed for the real world, where things inevitably do not always go right. The pillars are at once practical, sensible, and applicable in the hectic realities of the workplace because they focus on people, which you'll come to see as the most unstoppable force in a company's dynamic. The workforce doesn't have to settle for less any longer. Working together, we have the power to build a better tomorrow. Unite, and be invincible! |
