Leadership at the Crossroads - A Roadmap Through the Potholes and Pitfalls of Christian Leadership (Hardcover): Bruce Tucker Leadership at the Crossroads - A Roadmap Through the Potholes and Pitfalls of Christian Leadership (Hardcover)
Bruce Tucker
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Leadership makes a difference. Leaders directly impact the success or failure of any group or church. Excellent leaders direct churches to successfully accomplish their goals, fulfill their missions, and create a vibrant fellowship of believers who significantly influence their communities for Christ. Poor leaders can undermine the mission of a church, devastate the reputation of a fellowship, and sometimes dissolve the ministries of a congregation. The effects of average leaders are variable. They often allow churches to limp along, to become routine, even stale, or to just survive from week to week. Many factors challenge churches already, and ineffective leadership can make those challenges even more difficult to conquer.

A primary reason why leaders struggle so often is a lack of understanding and training in the basic principles of genuine leadership. Further confounding this lack of understanding is the promotion of contemporary philosophies about leadership that can distort those basic concepts of leadership. This ignorance is not the fault of pastors who have a sincere desire to lead effectively, but the training in leadership at many seminaries is often limited. Leadership at the Crossroads addresses some of those concerns. What is leadership? What leadership style works best? How can ministers more effectively motivate their congregations? How can pastors direct the planning process, promote decision making, properly delegate responsibilities, and initiate change? What methods are effective in conflict resolution? These questions, as well as others, are addressed in Leadership at the Crossroads.

The Birth of Moses and the Buddha - A Paradigm for the Comparative Study of Religions (Hardcover, New): Vanessa Rebecca Sasson The Birth of Moses and the Buddha - A Paradigm for the Comparative Study of Religions (Hardcover, New)
Vanessa Rebecca Sasson
R1,836 Discovery Miles 18 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Responding to a recent upsurge of Jewish interest in Buddhism, Sasson undertakes the first serious academic effort to uncover the common ground between the founders of the two religions, Moses and the Buddha. Because this is a study of traditions rather than a historical investigation, Sasson is able to synthesize various kinds of materials, from biblical and non-biblical, adn from early Pali and Sanskrit Buddhist sources. She notes the striking similarities between the life-patterns of the two leaders. Both were raised as princes and both eventually left their lavish upbringings only to discover something higher. Their mothers play prominent roles in the narratives of their births, while their fathers are often excluded from view. They were both born surrounded by light and embodying miraculous qualities. But there are also some rather consequential differences, which allow these two colossal figures to maintain their uniqueness and significance. Moses was a man chosen for a particular mission by a higher power, a human being serving as the deity's tool. By contrast, the Buddha was a man whose mission was self-determined and actualized over time. Moses lived one life; the Buddha lived many. The Buddha became the symbol of human perfection; Moses was cherished by his tradition despite - or possibly because of - his personal failings. And although Moses is often presented as the founder of Israelite religion, the Buddha was simply following the blueprint outlined by the Buddhas before him. The programme of this study goes further than to compare and contrast the two figures. Sasson argues that the comparative model she adopts can highlight doctrines and priorities of a religion that may otherwise remain hidden. In that way, the birth of Moses and the Buddha may serve as a paradigm for the comparative study of religions.

The Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong, 1921-1969 - In Love With the Chinese (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): C. Chu The Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong, 1921-1969 - In Love With the Chinese (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
C. Chu
R1,530 Discovery Miles 15 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong, 1921-1969: In Love with the Chinese "describes the adaptation of American women to cross-cultural situations in Hong Kong from 1921 to 1969. The Maryknoll Sisters were the first American Catholic community of women founded for overseas missionary work, and were the first American Sisters in Hong Kong. Maryknollers were independent, outgoing, and joyful women who were highly educated, and acted in professional capacities as teachers, social workers, and medical personnel. The assertion of this book is that the mission provided Maryknollers what they had long desired--equal employment opportunities--which were only later emphasized in the women's liberation movement of the 1960s.

American Protestants and TV in the 1950s - Responses to a New Medium (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Martin E. Marty American Protestants and TV in the 1950s - Responses to a New Medium (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Martin E. Marty; M Rosenthal
R1,506 Discovery Miles 15 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While television today is taken for granted, Americans in the 1950s faced the challenge of negotiating the new medium's place in the home and in American culture in general. Protestant leaders--both mainstream and evangelical--began to think carefully about what television meant for their communities and its potential impact on their work. Using the American Protestant experience of the introduction of television, Rosenthal illustrates the importance of the interplay between a new medium and its users in an engaging book suitable for general readers and students alike.

The Public Sphere - Liberal Modernity, Catholicism, Islam (Hardcover, First): A. Salvatore The Public Sphere - Liberal Modernity, Catholicism, Islam (Hardcover, First)
A. Salvatore
R1,538 Discovery Miles 15 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a theory-informed, comparative and historical exploration of the notion of the public sphere within Western and Islamic traditions. It situates the emergence of the modern public sphere in a wider historical and theoretical context than usually done in conventional analyses. The work traces cross-cutting genealogies spanning conventional borders between tradition and modernity, and in particular between the Western and the Islamic world. This approach unsettles received, evolutionary views of the public sphere as an exclusive legacy of Western political cultures. The public sphere is finally reconceived as a complex platform for the modern cultivation of culturally diverse, competing, yet intersecting discourses.

An invitation and guide for leaders "to cast a courageous and imaginative vision, to lead resiliently, and to be present and steady in times of deep anxiety." Ed Friedman's genius was to see the individual in the family in the larger group, bringing the wisdom of his experience as a therapist and rabbi to the field of organizational leadership. A timeless bestseller, A Failure of Nerve still astonishes in this new edition with its relevance and continues to transform the lives of leaders everywhere-business, church, family, schools-as it has for more than 20 years: Offers prescient guide to leadership in the age of "quick fix." Provides ways to recognize and address organizational dysfunction. Emphasizes "strength over pathology" in these anxious times. "The age that is upon us requires differentiated leadership that is willing to rise above the anxiety of the masses. We need leaders who will have the 'capacity to understand and deal effectively' with the hive mind that is us. This is, in Friedman's words, 'the key to the kingdom.' I am grateful for this accessible new edition." C. Andrew Doyle, Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Texas

Episcopal Elections in Late Antiquity (Hardcover): Johan Leemans, Peter Van Nuffelen, Shawn W J Keough, Carla Nicolaye Episcopal Elections in Late Antiquity (Hardcover)
Johan Leemans, Peter Van Nuffelen, Shawn W J Keough, Carla Nicolaye
R6,489 Discovery Miles 64 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The present volume contributes to a reassessment of the phenomenon of episcopal elections from the broadest possible perspective, examining the varied combination of factors, personalities, rules and habits that played a role in the process that eventually resulted in one specific candidate becoming the new bishop, and not another. The importance of episcopal elections hardly needs stating: With the bishop emerging as one of the key figures of late antique society, his election was a defining moment for the local community, and an occasion when local, ecclesiastical, and secular tensions were played out. Building on the state of the art regarding late antique bishops and episcopal election, this volume of collected studies by leading scholars offers fresh perspectives by focussing on specific case-studies and opening up new approaches. Covering much of the Later Roman Empire between 250-600 AD, the contributions will be of interest to scholars interested in Late Antique Christianity across disciplines as diverse as patristics, ancient history, canon law and oriental studies.

The Religious Dimensions of Advertising (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): T Sheffield The Religious Dimensions of Advertising (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
T Sheffield
R1,509 Discovery Miles 15 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This groundbreaking work explores media scholar Sut Jhally's thesis that advertising functions as a religion in late capitalism and relates this to critical theological studies. Sheffield argues that advertising is not itself a religion, but that it contains religious dimensions - analogous to Durkheim's description of objects as totems.

Prayer in Counseling - The Practitioner's Handbook (Hardcover): Jeff C. Vanzant Prayer in Counseling - The Practitioner's Handbook (Hardcover)
Jeff C. Vanzant
R759 Discovery Miles 7 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Prayer in Counseling ... The Practitioner's Handbook" is a bold apologetic for seeing greater use of prayer with the practice of counseling and psychotherapy in faith-based community, pastoral, and mainstream counseling settings. Using the evidence-based results of the best research studies and client surveys on the efficacy of prayer, the choice to integrate prayer with therapy is philosophically and empirically analyzed from every vantage. Practical examples, key filtering questions, and "tried and true" guidelines help the reader find a balance between the two extremes of avoidance/neglect of prayer as well as excessive/unwise usage. Gathering the best wisdom from the existing literature, the author builds a strong case to view prayer and counseling as unique but complementary avenues for dynamic change in a person's life. In light of potential counseling dilemmas and the need for healthy accountability "Prayer in Counseling" provides a roadmap to navigate the challenging ethical considerations of when and how to integrate prayer into therapy. Scriptural hindrances to effective prayer are identified and then contrasted against biblical principles and practical direction to make prayer a powerful, healing, and successful spiritual intervention in the counseling arena.

Liberating Faith - Religious Voices for Justice, Peace, and Ecological Wisdom (Paperback, New): Roger S. Gottlieb Liberating Faith - Religious Voices for Justice, Peace, and Ecological Wisdom (Paperback, New)
Roger S. Gottlieb; Contributions by Diane Ackerman, Nawal H. Ammar, Scott Appleby, Naim Stifan Ateek, …
R1,919 Discovery Miles 19 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This sweeping new anthology shows how religion has joined with and learned from movements for social justice, peace, and ecological wisdom. Liberating Faith surveys the entire range of religious social activism: from liberation theology and feminist religion to ecotheology and peace activism. It includes theology, social critique, position papers, denominational statements, manifestos, rituals, prayers, biographical accounts, and journalistic descriptions of real world struggles, beginning with a survey of ethical teachings from traditional sources. Following sections deal with "precursor" voices before the 20th century, Gandhi's exemplary vision, overviews of the connections between religion, society, and political movements, and impassioned accounts of particular issues. Containing voices from a multitude of traditions, national settings, and perspectives. Liberating Faith includes writings by Latin American liberation theologians and radical American religious activists, statements on social justice by the Pope and environmental morality by the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch, religious critiques of collective and interpersonal violence, passionate denunciations of racism and quiet eloquence which demands that we all stand up for morality in dark times. Among the more than eighty authors are Thomas Berry, Thich Nhat Hanh, Abraham Heschel, Martin Luther King, Winona Laduke, Michael Lerner, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Judith Plaskow, Rosemary Ruether, and Vandana Shiva. An invaluable teaching resource and the definitive introduction to global religious social activism, this book offers a visionary alternative to both repressive fundamentalism and spiritless secularism.

Sociology in Theology - Reflexivity and Belief (Hardcover): K Flanagan Sociology in Theology - Reflexivity and Belief (Hardcover)
K Flanagan
R1,507 Discovery Miles 15 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sociology has taken a recent and unexpected theological turn that has radical implications for reflexivity. This original study explores these in four areas: visual aspects of reflexivity and theology; Simmel and Mauss on prayer as a form of spiritual capital; identity and the constitution of character; and finally, and most controversially, a reflection on sociological expectations of theology. This is one of the few works that explores a new terrain with profound implications for sociology and theology.
