Satan in America - The Devil We Know (Paperback): W. Scott Poole Satan in America - The Devil We Know (Paperback)
W. Scott Poole
R1,514 Discovery Miles 15 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Satan in America tells the story of America's complicated relationship with the devil. 'New light' evangelists of the eighteenth century, enslaved African Americans, demagogic politicians, and modern American film-makers have used the devil to damn their enemies, explain the nature of evil and injustice, mount social crusades, construct a national identity, and express anxiety about matters as diverse as the threat of war to the dangers of deviant sexuality. The idea of the monstrous and the bizarre providing cultural metaphors that interact with historical change is not new. Poole takes a new tack by examining this idea in conjunction with the concerns of American religious history. The book shows that both the range and the scope of American religiousness made theological evil an especially potent symbol. Satan appears repeatedly on the political, religious, and cultural landscape of the United States, a shadow self to the sunny image of American progress and idealism.

Modern Satanism - Anatomy of a Radical Subculture (Hardcover, New): Chris Mathews Modern Satanism - Anatomy of a Radical Subculture (Hardcover, New)
Chris Mathews
R2,092 Discovery Miles 20 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1966, Anton LaVey introduced to the world the Church of Satan, an atheistic religion devoted to the philosophy of individualism and pitilessness often associated with Satan. Modern Satanism offers a comprehensive survey and analysis of the church that LaVey built. Satanism has been an open religion for forty years now and operates successfully in its self-created countercultural niche. Given the provocative nature of its name, contemporary Satanism is only superficially understood as an alternative religion/ideology, and all-too-frequently seen as a medieval superstition and associated with rumors of obscure rituals, perverse hedonism, cult-like behavior, and tales of ritual abuse and murder. These may be misconceptions, but the truth behind the unenviable reputation is no less dramatic. Satanism generally eschews supernatural beliefs and embodies a staunchly individualistic, pitiless, anti-egalitarian creed. If there is anything fundamentally diabolical about modern Satanism, it stems more from the echoes of Nazism in its theories than from its horror-comic trappings.

"Modern Satanism" covers the history, ideology, personalities, and practices of the decentralized international movement that contemporary Satanism has become. The work addresses the various beliefs and practices espoused by those who follow it: the ideal of Satan as a rebellious emblem; SatanisM's occult, literary, and philosophical influences; the history of the Church of Satan and other Satanic organizations; the ideology of Satanism; SatanisM's frequent flirtations and strong parallels with neo-Nazism and other forms of extremism; Satanism in the media and popular culture; and the reasons for SatanisM's continuing attractiveness to new converts. Though the tone of the work attempts to remain neutral when discussing historical matters, it is by necessity critical of the subculture's extremist rhetoric and recurring associations with the far right and racialist extremism.

Communicating with the Spirits (Hardcover): Eva Pocs, Gabor Klaniczay Communicating with the Spirits (Hardcover)
Eva Pocs, Gabor Klaniczay
R2,602 Discovery Miles 26 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Focuses on the problem of communication with the other world: the phenomenon of spirit possession and its changing historical interpretations, the imaginary schemes elaborated for giving accounts of the journeys to the other world, for communicating with the dead, and finally the historical archetypes of this kind of religious manifestation-trance prophecy, divination, and shamanism. Recognized historians and ethnologists analyze the relationship, coexistence and conflicts of popular belief systems, Judeo-Christian mythology and demonology in medieval and modern Europe. The essays address links between rites and beliefs, folklore and literature; the legacy of various pre-Christian mythologies; the syncretic forms of ancient, medieval and modern belief- and rite-systems; "pure" examples from religious-ethnological research outside Europe to elucidate European problems.

Death Metal Music - The Passion and Politics of a Subculture (Paperback): Natalie J. Purcell Death Metal Music - The Passion and Politics of a Subculture (Paperback)
Natalie J. Purcell
R698 Discovery Miles 6 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Death Metal is among the most despised forms of violently themed entertainment. Many politicians, conservative groups and typical Americans attribute youth violence and the destruction of social values to such entertainment. The usual assumptions about the Death Metal scene and its fans have rarely been challenged.

This book investigates the demographic trends, attitudes, philosophical beliefs, ethical systems, and behavioral patterns within the scene, seeking to situate Death Metal in the larger social order. The Death Metal community proves to be a useful microcosm for much of American subculture and lends insight into the psychological and social functions of many forbidden or illicit entertainment forms. The author's analysis, rich in interviews with rock stars, radio hosts, and average adolescent fans, provides a key to comprehending deviant tendencies in modern American culture.

Satanism Today - An Encyclopedia of Religion, Folklore, and Popular Culture (Hardcover): James R Lewis Satanism Today - An Encyclopedia of Religion, Folklore, and Popular Culture (Hardcover)
James R Lewis
R3,155 Discovery Miles 31 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This authoritative reference work presents a full image of the Prince of Darkness as he appears throughout traditional theology, mythology, art and literature, and popular culture. This nonsensationalist encyclopedia examines contemporary images of the devil and sorts out the many different forms these images take. Although much of the myths relating to Satan derive directly or indirectly from the Christian tradition, the key sources of diabolical images today are horror movies, heavy metal music, and conservative Christian literature. This encyclopedia gives a brief overview depicting the history and transformation of the meaning of the Prince of Darkness, and 300 entries cover subjects like the angel of death, backward masking (messages revealed when songs are played backward), neopagan witchcraft, UFOs, and The Satanic Bible. Extensive appendixes include the l992 FBI study of satanic ritual abuse, the most influential document ever written on the subject, as well as sample satanic scriptures and a satanic wedding ceremony. Satanism Today also includes a chronology, bibliographies, and references.

Raising the Devil - Satanism, New Religions, and the Media (Hardcover): Bill Ellis Raising the Devil - Satanism, New Religions, and the Media (Hardcover)
Bill Ellis
R1,282 Discovery Miles 12 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Raising the Devil reveals how the Christian Pentecostal movement, right-wing conspiracy theories, and an opportunistic media turned grassroots folk traditions into the Satanism scare of the 1980s. During the mid-twentieth century, devil worship was seen as merely an isolated practice of medieval times. But by the early 1980s, many influential experts in clinical medicine and in law enforcement were proclaiming that satanic cults were widespread and dangerous. By examining the broader context for alleged "cult" activity, Bill Ellis demonstrates how the image of contemporary Satanism emerged during the 1970s. Blaming a wide range of mental and physical illnesses on in-dwelling demons, a faction of the Pentecostal movement became convinced that their gifts of the spirit were being opposed by satanic activities. They attributed these activities to a "cult" that was the evil twin of true Christianity. In some of the cases Ellis considers, common folk beliefs and rituals were misunderstood as evidence of devil worship. In others, narratives and rituals themselves were used to combat satanic forces. As the media found such stories more and more attractive, any activity with even remotely occult overtones was demonized in order to fit a model of absolute good confronting evil. Ellis's wide-ranging investigation covers ouija boards, cattle mutilation, graveyard desecration, and "diabolical medicine"--the psychiatric community's version of exorcism. He offers a balanced view of contentious issues such as demonic possession, satanic ritual abuse, and the testimonies of confessing "ex-Satanists." A trained folklorist, Ellis seeks to navigate a middle road in this dialog, and his insights into informal religious traditions clarify how the image of Satanism both explained and created deviant behavior.

This classic sourcebook in demonology, a reprint of the work first published in 1900, assembles 350 images of the Devil in comparing the personification of evil that is common to many cultures.

Ruth Petzoldt, Paul D. Neubauer
R2,406 Discovery Miles 24 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents a chronological series of essays on various demonic traits and traditions handed down from classical antiquity, reinterpreted and systematized in the Middle Ages in Europe, and extending their influences to our present day and culture. The main focus lies on the adaptation and reformulation of specific demonological constellations in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, combining ethnological approaches with concepts of cultural history and their reflection in the arts and in literature. These superhuman and supernatural entities present us with a multitude of forms, figures, and functions - from helpful messengers and mediators to frightful and devilish antagonists of the humans they encounter. As model explanations of that which may not be explained in any other way they offer answers and interpretations of the 'Other' outside humanity as well as inside the human being.

Mal'uocchiu - Ambiguity, Evil Eye, and the Language of Distress (Paperback): Sam Migliore Mal'uocchiu - Ambiguity, Evil Eye, and the Language of Distress (Paperback)
Sam Migliore
R1,185 Discovery Miles 11 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The evil eye has received considerable attention in the literature of disciplines as diverse as anthropology and medicine. Researchers have attempted to identify and explain this essentially ambiguous and variable phenomenon from a number of perspectives - as a culture-bound syndrome, an idiom of distress, a mechanism of social control, and a representation of psychobiological fear. In Mal'uocchiu: Ambiguity, Evil Eye, and the Language of Distress, Sam Migliore shifts the focus of discussion from paradigms to a practical examination of how people use the notion of the evil eye in a variety of sociocultural contexts, particularly in various aspects of Sicilian-Canadian culture and experience.Drawing on the theories of Luigi Pirandello and Ludwig Wittgenstein, Migliore argues that mal'uocchiu, and by implication other folk constructs, is like a character in search of an author to give it 'form' or 'meaning.' The book begins by considering the indeterminate nature of the evil-eye complex. Migliore proposes that this indeterminacy allows people to create myriad alternative meanings and messages to define and make sense of their personal experiences. He then examines how the evil eye relates to Sicilian-Canadian conceptions of health and illness, and discusses treatment and prevention strategies. Throughout the study, the author blends context-setting, case studies, personal recollection, and interpretation to provide readers with an accessible, alternative look at the multifaceted nature of this folk tradition. His position as both an anthropologist and a community 'insider' affords him a unique perspective on the subject. This study will be essential reading for students of medical anthropology, religion, and ethnic studies.

Damned Women - Sinners and Witches in Puritan New England (Hardcover): Elizabeth Reis Damned Women - Sinners and Witches in Puritan New England (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Reis
R1,853 Discovery Miles 18 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In her analysis of the cultural construction of gender in early America, Elizabeth Reis explores the intersection of Puritan theology, Puritan evaluations of womanhood, and the Salem witchcraft episodes. She finds in those intersections the basis for understanding why women were accused of witchcraft more often than men, why they confessed more often, and why they frequently accused other women of being witches. In negotiating their beliefs about the devil's powers, both women and men embedded womanhood in the discourse of depravity.Puritan ministers insisted that women and men were equal in the sight of God, with both sexes equally capable of cleaving to Christ or to the devil. Nevertheless, Reis explains, womanhood and evil were inextricably linked in the minds and hearts of seventeenth-century New England Puritans. Women and men feared hell equally but Puritan culture encouraged women to believe it was their vile natures that would take them there rather than the particular sins they might have committed.Following the Salem witchcraft trials, Reis argues, Puritans' understanding of sin and the devil changed. Ministers and laity conceived of a Satan who tempted sinners and presided physically over hell, rather than one who possessed souls in the living world. Women and men became increasingly confident of their redemption, although women more than men continued to imagine themselves as essentially corrupt, even after the Great Awakening.

Witchcraft and its Transformations, c.1650-c.1750 (Hardcover): Ian Bostridge Witchcraft and its Transformations, c.1650-c.1750 (Hardcover)
Ian Bostridge
R6,624 Discovery Miles 66 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an original and important study of the significance of witchcraft in English public life in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this lively account, Ian Bostridge explores contemporary beliefs about witchcraft and shows how it remained a serious concern across the spectrum of political opinion. He concludes that its gradual descent into polite ridicule had as much to do with political developments as with the birth of reason.

Tituba, Reluctant Witch of Salem - Devilish Indians and Puritan Fantasies (Hardcover): Elaine G Breslaw Tituba, Reluctant Witch of Salem - Devilish Indians and Puritan Fantasies (Hardcover)
Elaine G Breslaw
R2,679 Discovery Miles 26 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"A fascinating theory about the origins of the witch hunt that is sure to influence future historians. . . . a valuable probe of how myths can feed hysteria." --The Washington Post Book World "An imaginative reconstruction of what might have been Tituba's past." --Times Literary Supplement "A fine example of readable scholarship." --Baltimore Sun In this important book, Elaine Breslaw claims to have rediscovered Tituba, the elusive, mysterious, and often mythologized Indian woman accused of witchcraft in Salem in 1692 and immortalized in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Reconstructing the life of the slave woman at the center of the notorious Salem witch trials, the book follows Tituba from her likely origins in South America to Barbados, forcefully dispelling the commonly-held belief that Tituba was African. The uniquely multicultural nature of life on a seventeenth- century Barbadan sugar plantation--defined by a mixture of English, American Indian, and African ways and folklore--indelibly shaped the young Tituba's world and the mental images she brought with her to Massachusetts. Breslaw divides Tituba's story into two parts. The first focuses on Tituba's roots in Barbados, the second on her life in the New World. The author emphasizes the inextricably linked worlds of the Caribbean and the North American colonies, illustrating how the Puritan worldview was influenced by its perception of possessed Indians. Breslaw argues that Tituba's confession to practicing witchcraft clearly reveals her savvy and determined efforts to protect herself by actively manipulating Puritan fears. This confession, perceived as evidence of a diabolical conspiracy, was the central agent in the cataclysmic series of events that saw 19 people executed and over 150 imprisoned, including a young girl of 5. A landmark contribution to women's history and early American history, Tituba, Reluctant Witch of Salem sheds new light on one of the most painful episodes in American history, through the eyes of its most crucial participant. Elaine G. Breslaw is Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and author of the acclaimed Tituba, Reluctant Witch of Salem: Devilish Indians and Puritan Fantasies (also available from NYU Press).

Persuasions of the Witch's Craft - Ritual Magic in Contemporary England (Paperback): T. M Luhrmann Persuasions of the Witch's Craft - Ritual Magic in Contemporary England (Paperback)
T. M Luhrmann
R926 Discovery Miles 9 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To find out why reasonable people are drawn to the seemingly bizarre practices of magic and witchcraft, Tanya Luhrmann immersed herself in the secret lives of Londoners who call themselves magicians. She came to know them as friends and equals and was initiated into various covens and magical groups. She explains the process through which once-skeptical individuals--educated, middle-class people, frequently of high intelligence--become committed to the ideas behind witchcraft and find magical ritual so compellingly persuasive. This intriguing book draws some disturbing conclusions about the ambivalence of belief within modern urban society.

Even today witchcraft is found in many socities, and ancient Mesopotamia was no exception. To the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians witchcraft was the cause of otherwise inexplicable diseases and misfortunes, and elaborate means of protection against and cure from the consequences of witchcraft were developed. This study examines Mesopotamian anti-witchcraft literature, focusing on the extant descriptions of witches and sorceresses, their methods, the symptoms of the bewitched and the rituals and remedies used to combat witchcraft.

Joseph Klaits
R503 Discovery Miles 5 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first book to consider the general course and significance of the European witch craze of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries since H.R. Trevor-Roper's classic and pioneering study appeared some fifteen years ago. Drawing upon the advances in historical and social-science scholarship of the past decade and a half, Joseph Klaits integrates the recent appreciations of witchcraft in regional studies, the history of popular culture, anthropology, sociology, and psychology to better illuminate the place of witch hunting in the context of social, political, economic and religious change.

"In all, Klaits has done a good job. Avoiding the scandalous and sensational, he has maintained throughout, with sensitivity and economy, an awareness of the uniqueness of the theories and persecutions that have fascinated scholars now for two decades and are unlikely to lose their appeal in the foreseeable future." American Historical Review

In 1634 Urbain Grandier, a handsome and successful seducer of women and priest of the parish of Loudun, was tried, tortured and burnt at the stake. He had been found guilty of being in league with the devil and seducing an entire convent of nuns in what was the most sensational case of mass possession and sexual hysteria in history. Grandier maintained his innocence to the end and four years after his death the nuns were still being subjected to exorcisms to free them from their demonic bondage. Huxley's vivid account of this bizarre tale of religious and sexual obsession transforms our understanding of the medieval world.

The book explores the issues of exorcism and demonic possession and its meaning on this new twentieth century. The author presents leading experts in the field of mental health, sociologists and theology which face off the classic battle royale of science versus religion and good versus evil. Framed within the most famous and widely documented exorcism case in the history of Christianity, the 1949 exorcism of a thirteen year old boy in Mt. Ranier, MD on which William Peter Blatty based his celebrated novel and later film The Exorcist, the most frightening horror film to come out of Hollywood, the author explores the controversial subject in the light of science. "Is demonic possession, like sin, one of the dead metaphors supposedly killed off by scientific spirit of the 21st century?" "Is our quest for the existence of such phenomena reflected in the human need to live in a world where evil embodies the image of Satan-the fallen angel who inhabits the inner circle of Dante's inferno?" "Is the Antichrist a living and viable force at work in our lives, awaiting his next opportunity to exert his influence as he attempts to drag the world into a state of chaos?". The author presents documents on the Mount Rainier Exorcism never before unveiled that had remained hidden in the archives of the prestigious Rhine Research Foundation, former Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory since 1949. For the first , he uncovers the mystery of the Mount Rainier Exorcism, via a rigorous scientific methodology ,and presents interviews with actual witnesses of the case and photographs of the actual sites where the mysterious events took place never before released. The author may finally settle down the mystery surrounding the Mount Rainier case and The Exorcist.
