Olympic Ceremonialism and The Performance of National Character - From London 2012 to Rio 2016 (Hardcover, New): R Tzanelli Olympic Ceremonialism and The Performance of National Character - From London 2012 to Rio 2016 (Hardcover, New)
R Tzanelli
R1,864 Discovery Miles 18 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In recent decades ceremonies stood in Olympiads as both vehicles of cultural values and shows embracing the banal and the everyday. But how much do we understand them as forms of public art? This book examines the London 2012 opening and closing ceremonies and the handover event to Rio for the 2016 Olympics as articulations of national and cosmopolitan belonging. It is argued that embodied and projected performances of Britishness and Brazilianness embraced both artistic styles and the contemporary digital turn, refinement and banality. Combinations of art and technology reflected a vision of humanity in motion complying with the Olympic values of fairness, beauty and embodied well-being. The three ceremonial performances supported imaginative travel on stage, on big screens and in musical genres. This travel, at once mediated, embodied and experiential, created an ideal form of 'human': a tornadoros. A creative worker and a tourist, the tornadoros manipulates audio-visual narratives of culture and identity for global Olympic audiences. Spanning Sociology, Sports Studies, Culture and Media Studies, Performance Studies and Tourism Studies, this is a highly interdisciplinary and original perspective on the Olympics.

Redefining Financial Services - The New Renaissance in Value Propositions (Hardcover): J. DiVanna Redefining Financial Services - The New Renaissance in Value Propositions (Hardcover)
J. DiVanna
R3,042 Discovery Miles 30 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Redefining Financial Services explores the fundamental redefinition of the role of financial intermediaries in the new century. Combining empirical knowledge with a historical approach, the author reveals that seven centuries of advances in technology have changed the nature of financial services very little. Examining the state of financial services today in the context of the new economy's evolution, Joe DiVanna investigates what changes are happening in the financial industry, where they are occurring, how they are materializing and, more importantly, why.

Contract Options for Buyers and Sellers of Talent in Professional Sports (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Duane W. Rockerbie, Stephen... Contract Options for Buyers and Sellers of Talent in Professional Sports (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Duane W. Rockerbie, Stephen T Easton
R1,856 Discovery Miles 18 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Palgrave Pivot re-examines salary formation in Major League Baseball in light of real option theory to clarify the connection between salary and marginal revenue product for professional baseball players. Current literature has tended to treat single-year and multi-year contracts similarly, ignoring the potential option value for teams and for players. Recent work points to the observation that both high-productivity and low-productivity athletes have salaries that systematically differ from their marginal revenue product, and that free agents signing multi-year contracts are overpaid relative to free agents signing one-year contracts. This book argues that the value of signing an athlete to a contract should be determined similarly to the determination of the value of an investment project or a financial asset. This book demonstrates how to calculate the value of real options to the player and the team owner with a simple two-year contract, and offers extensions to the real options model for multiyear contracts or when a player is early or late in his career.

Leisure Migration - A Sociological Study on Tourism (Hardcover): Jozsef Borocz Leisure Migration - A Sociological Study on Tourism (Hardcover)
Jozsef Borocz; Edited by Jafar Jafari
R3,036 Discovery Miles 30 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book opens with an account of recent developments in the economic, political and cultural sociology of international tourism and goes on to analyse the relationships between international tourism and the broad economic determinants of the world system. The book aims to understand "leisure migration" in two principal contexts: the socio-economic hierarchies of society, and the legacy of east-west political alliances. This novel theoretical synthesis combines data at the global, continental, and regional levels of tourism, focusing particularly on Austria and Hungary - one of the most exciting areas of Europe - where the social, political, cultural and economic boundaries of the emerging European integration are being contested and redrawn today.

In adopting an eclectic research strategy, including historical narrative, content analysis, linguistic history, statistical modelling, and fieldwork observation, the book breaks new ground with regard to the empirical material it covers, and is a timely and relevant contribution to the advancement of this debate.

Tourism Development in Post-Soviet Nations - From Communism to Capitalism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Susan L Slocum, Valeria... Tourism Development in Post-Soviet Nations - From Communism to Capitalism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Susan L Slocum, Valeria Klitsounova
R4,314 Discovery Miles 43 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Former communist countries face unique issues in developing and marketing tourism businesses, communities, and attractions because of centralized polices that discouraged international influences. While soviet economies relied on state policies to facilitate community development, the success of capitalism lies in access to a variety of resources, such as the environment, fiscal services, infrastructure, and market knowledge at the local level. Moreover, communal societies potentially possess social capital that can provide unique economic development opportunities. This book incorporates a regional perspective that widens the tourism development debate to include theoretical analyses, applied research, and case studies that document the broader successes and challenges that affect tourism stakeholders and addresses the necessary elements that facilitate a comprehensive tourism development strategy in emerging and transitioning former communist countries.

Sports Economics - Current Research (Hardcover, New): John L. Fizel, Elizabeth Gustafson, Lawrence Hadley Sports Economics - Current Research (Hardcover, New)
John L. Fizel, Elizabeth Gustafson, Lawrence Hadley
R2,927 Discovery Miles 29 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The sports industry presents many unusual and interesting opportunities for the application of economic theory and econometrics. In 15 professional papers, this book addresses current economic issues in the industry, including the problem of competitive balance, the location of professional sports teams and their impact on local communities, managerial decision making, and issues related to labor markets. Extending the previous research in sports economics, the papers reflect the most recent applications of economic theory in this area. The book will be a valuable resource for professional economists working on sports economics topics.

In two opening chapters on competitive balance, the contributors develop a model for college football and examine the impact of balance on attendance in major league baseball. In a section on the location of professional sports teams, the chapters then develop a model to predict the location of expansion teams, make econometric estimates of the impact of Super Bowls on the host city, and analyze the ownership of stadiums and arenas. Managerial decision making is discussed in chapters that examine alternative econometric models of production in baseball, use a production function model to analyze technological change in Major League Baseball, examine the management of team streaks, consider the competitive balance between American and National Leagues, analyze the efficiency of player trades in the National Basketball Association, and estimate the impact of participation in inter-collegiate sports on academic performance. In the final section on labor markets, the contributors estimate the impact of owner collusion on baseball players' salaries, consider the impact of the new collective bargaining agreement in Major League Baseball, analyze the impact of being a union representative, and examine the impact of the National Football League's salary cap on player's salaries.

Tourism Employment in Nordic Countries - Trends, Practices, and Opportunities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Andreas Walmsley,... Tourism Employment in Nordic Countries - Trends, Practices, and Opportunities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Andreas Walmsley, Kajsa Aberg, Petra Blinnikka, Gunnar Thor Johannesson
R4,633 Discovery Miles 46 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Viewed through a politico-economic lens, Nordic countries share what is often referred to as the 'Nordic model', characterised by a comprehensive welfare state; higher spending on childcare; more equitable income distribution; and lifelong-learning policies. This edited collection considers these contexts to explore the complex nature of tourism employment, thereby providing insights into the dynamic nature, characteristics, and meaning of work in tourism. Contributors combine explorations of the impact of policy on tourism employment with a more traditional human resources management approach focusing on employment issues from an organizational perspective, such as job satisfaction, training, and retention. The text points to opportunities as well as challenges relating to issues such as the notion of 'decent work', the role and contribution of migrant workers, and more broadly, the varying policy objectives embedded within the Nordic welfare model. Offering a detailed, multi-faceted analysis of tourism employment, this book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners interested in tourism employment in the region.

Geospatial Technologies and Homeland Security - Research Frontiers and Future Challenges (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Daniel Sui Geospatial Technologies and Homeland Security - Research Frontiers and Future Challenges (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Daniel Sui

Homeland security and context In the Geographical Dimensions of Terrorism (GDOT) (Cutter et al. 2003), the first book after 9/11 to address homeland security and geography, we developed several thematic research agendas and explored intersections between geographic research and the importance of context, both geographical and political, in relationship to the concepts of terrorism and security. It is good to see that a great deal of new thought and research continues to flow from that initial research agenda, as illustrated by many of the papers of this new book, entitled Geospatial Technologies and Homeland Security: Research Frontiers and Future Challenges. Context is relevant not only to understanding homeland security issues broadly, but also to the conduct of research on geospatial technologies. It is impossible to understand the implications of a homeland security strategy, let alone hope to make predictions, conduct meaningful modeling and research, or assess the value and dangers of geospatial technologies, without consideration of overarching political, social, economic, and geographic contexts within which these questions are posed.
