The Gender of Sexuality - Exploring Sexual Possibilities (Hardcover, Second Edition): Virginia Rutter, Pepper Schwartz The Gender of Sexuality - Exploring Sexual Possibilities (Hardcover, Second Edition)
Virginia Rutter, Pepper Schwartz
R4,317 Discovery Miles 43 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Gender of Sexuality serves as a fun and informative guide on how to approach the topics of gender and sexuality-two areas fraught with stereotypes and misinformation. The second edition of this book features significant new material on the changing status of gender, same sex marriage, and transgender. After introducing key concepts in gender and sexuality, the authors explore topics such as sexual desire, the role of biology, sexual behavior, uncommitted sexual relationships and "hooking up," marriage and cohabitation, and the politics of sexuality. Examples from popular culture, film, and media invite readers to engage with key concepts. This is an ideal book for courses on gender, sexuality, marriage and family, or social problems.

Force or Fraud - British Seduction Stories and the Problem of Resistance, 1660-1760 (Hardcover): Toni Bowers Force or Fraud - British Seduction Stories and the Problem of Resistance, 1660-1760 (Hardcover)
Toni Bowers
R3,690 Discovery Miles 36 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Force or fraud - rape or seduction? This book examines the development, between the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 and the accession of George III in 1760, of the peculiarly modern habit of making that distinction on the basis of female responsive agency. It tells the story of how rape and seduction came to be distinguished according to measures of women's resistance and consent in low-brow "amatory" writing, and how at the same time amatory fictions interrogated the implications of their own procedures, implications still very much with us today.
The amatory tales of Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, Eliza Haywood, and Samuel Richardson - early pioneers in British prose fiction - were immensely popular in their day. But they were also scandalous and controversial, not least because they so often depicted innocent young women under assault from men in positions of legitimate authority over them. Focusing on an ideologically-inflected strategy it calls "collusive resistance," Force or Fraud uncovers the paradoxical means by which formulaic late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century seduction stories wielded a surprising degree of power and influence - not only over female imaginations, publication lists, and leisure time, but also over the interpretation of one of the age's most troubling problems, the problem of constructing virtuous resistance to those in authority. Stories about the ambiguous seductions of young women helped British political subjects negotiate a period of dramatic change and uncertainty, and to imagine newly legitimate forms of resistance.

Colonizing Russia's Promised Land - Orthodoxy and Community on the Siberian Steppe (Hardcover): Aileen E. Friesen Colonizing Russia's Promised Land - Orthodoxy and Community on the Siberian Steppe (Hardcover)
Aileen E. Friesen
R1,868 Discovery Miles 18 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The movement of millions of settlers to Siberia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked one of the most ambitious undertakings pursued by the tsarist state. Colonizing Russia's Promised Land examines how Russian Orthodoxy acted as a basic building block for constructing Russian settler communities in current-day southern Siberia and northern Kazakhstan. Russian state officials aspired to lay claim to land that was politically under their authority, but remained culturally unfamiliar. By exploring the formation and evolution of Omsk diocese - a settlement mission - Colonizing Russia's Promised Land reveals how the migration of settlers expanded the role of Orthodoxy as a cultural force in transforming Russia's imperial periphery by "russifying" the land and marginalizing the Indigenous Kazakh population. In the first study exploring the role of Orthodoxy in settler colonialism, Aileen Friesen shows how settlers, clergymen, and state officials viewed the recreation of Orthodox parish life as practised in European Russia as fundamental to the establishment of settler communities, and to the success of colonization. Friesen uniquely gives peasant settlers a voice in this discussion, as they expressed their religious aspirations and fears to priests and tsarist officials. Despite this agreement, tensions existed not only among settlers, but also within the Orthodox Church as these groups struggled to define what constituted the Russian Orthodox faith and culture.

Ars Erotica - Sex and Somaesthetics in the Classical Arts of Love (Paperback): Richard Shusterman Ars Erotica - Sex and Somaesthetics in the Classical Arts of Love (Paperback)
Richard Shusterman
R894 Discovery Miles 8 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The term ars erotica refers to the styles and techniques of lovemaking with the honorific title of art. But in what sense are these practices artistic and how do they contribute to the aesthetics and ethics of self-cultivation in the art of living? In this book, Richard Shusterman offers a critical, comparative analysis of the erotic theories proposed by the most influential premodern cultural traditions that shaped our contemporary world. Beginning with ancient Greece, whose god of desiring love gave eroticism its name, Shusterman examines the Judaeo-Christian biblical tradition and the classical erotic theories of Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and Japanese cultures, before concluding with medieval and Renaissance Europe. His exploration of their errors and insights shows how we could improve the quality of life and love today. By using the engine of eros to cultivate qualities of sensitivity, grace, skill, and self-mastery, we can reimagine a richer, more positive vision of sex education.

Laura Doyle's controversial approach to dating has given thousands of single women everything they need to attract romance, intimacy, and a marriage proposal. A Surrendered Single doesn't have to look for Mr Right - she attracts him. Practical and compassionate, THE SURRENDERED SINGLE is a step-by-step guide that shows you how to: * Ask men to ask you out so that you always have a date * Avoid the remorse of, 'I wish I hadn't said...' * Judge a man's character in 30 days or fewer * Become your best self and attract good men Whether you're recovering from a break-up or divorce, on the dating scene or want your romance to deepen, THE SURRENDERED SINGLE will bring you the relationship you want with a man you love - and who loves you.

Sexual Liberation, Socialist Style - Communist Czechoslovakia and the Science of Desire, 1945-1989 (Paperback): Katerina Liskova Sexual Liberation, Socialist Style - Communist Czechoslovakia and the Science of Desire, 1945-1989 (Paperback)
Katerina Liskova
R977 Discovery Miles 9 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first account of sexual liberation in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Katerina Liskova reveals how, in the case of Czechoslovakia, important aspects of sexuality were already liberated during the 1950s - abortion was legalized, homosexuality decriminalized, the female orgasm came into experts' focus - and all that was underscored by an emphasis on gender equality. However, with the coming of Normalization, gender discourses reversed and women were to aspire to be caring mothers and docile wives. Good sex was to cement a lasting marriage and family. In contrast to the usual Western accounts highlighting the importance of social movements to sexual and gender freedom, here we discover, through the analysis of rich archival sources covering forty years of state socialism in Czechoslovakia, how experts, including sexologists, demographers, and psychologists, advised the state on population development, marriage and the family to shape the most intimate aspects of people's lives.

Sexuality and Public Space in India - Reading the Visible (Hardcover): Carmel Christy Sexuality and Public Space in India - Reading the Visible (Hardcover)
Carmel Christy
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The topic of sexuality and gender within the South Asian context is timely and widely discussed across a variety of academic disciplines. Since the end of the last century, there have been debates in the cultural sphere in India on issues concerning Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender people's rights, gender, sex workers' rights and caste. There has also been an explicit visibility for sexuality in the form of discussion around intimate scenes in films, advertisements and moral concerns around pre-marital heterosexual relationships and same-sex relationships. This book brings out the modalities through which explicit visibility of sexuality gets constituted in the public space of India after the 1990s. The specificities through which relations of gender/ sexuality and caste get constituted and performed in regional media provide significant entry points to an understanding of larger structures and the ever-present fissures through which these larger structures emerge. Focussing on the southern state of Kerala, the book investigates women's sexuality and caste through a number of case studies: the Suryanelli rape case, neology in the media and the debates around the life narratives of Nalini Jameela, a sex worker. The book does not stop at representational practices as it also looks at the negotiations between the subject and her represented figures which is a significant addition to the existing body of work in the field of media and gender studies. Sexuality and Public Space in India is a careful interrogation of the mass-mediatized space of contemporary public discourse around sexuality. It will be of interest to academics in South Asian Studies, Sociology, Anthropology and Gender Studies.

Men and Sex - A Sexual Script Approach (Paperback): Philip Graham Men and Sex - A Sexual Script Approach (Paperback)
Philip Graham
R981 Discovery Miles 9 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Men and Sex provides a comprehensive yet accessible account of male sexuality by using the theoretical concept of the 'sexual script' to illuminate different aspects of men's sexual behaviour. Graham begins by discussing different theories of sexuality, before providing a more detailed description of sexual script theory. This proposes how male sexual behaviour can be explained as a result of cultural influences modified by individual experience and personality as well as by interaction with others. Individual chapters detail the development of sexual scripts in childhood and adolescence, masturbation, cultural influences on sexuality, heterosexual behaviour, variations and problems in sexual functioning, homosexual behaviour, transsexualism, procreative sex, coercive sexual behaviour, the impact of physical and mental health problems on sexuality, and sexuality and pornography. The concluding chapter looks at the future of male sexuality. The book makes a valuable contribution to the burgeoning literature on masculinity studies.

Intimate Relationships across Cultures - A Comparative Study (Hardcover): Charles T Hill Intimate Relationships across Cultures - A Comparative Study (Hardcover)
Charles T Hill
R2,793 Discovery Miles 27 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intimate relationships exist in social domains, in which there are cultural rules regarding appropriate behaviors. But they also inhabit psychological domains of thoughts, feelings, and desires. How are intimate relationships experienced by people living in various types of romantic or sexual relationships and in various cultural regions around the world? In what ways are they similar, and in what ways are they different? This book presents a cross-cultural extension of the findings originating from the classic Boston Couples Study. Amassing a wealth of new data from almost 9,000 participants worldwide, Hill explores the factors that predict having a current partner, relationship satisfaction, and relationship commitment. These predictions are compared across eight relationship types and nine cultural regions, then uniquely combined in a Comprehensive Partner Model and a Comprehensive Commitment Model. The findings test the generalizability of previous theories about intimate relationships, with implications for self-reflection, couples counseling, and well-being.

Putting Children's Interests First in US Family Law and Policy - With Power Comes Responsibility (Paperback): Helen M.... Putting Children's Interests First in US Family Law and Policy - With Power Comes Responsibility (Paperback)
Helen M. Alvare
R963 Discovery Miles 9 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The well-being of children should be a social priority, and should consider the family circumstances into which children are born. Putting Children's Interests First in US Family Law and Policy: With Power Comes Responsibility details the rise of a federal policy of 'sexual expressionism', which prioritizes adults' interests over children's welfare. It describes the costs to children in the areas of family structure and stability, and the federal programs attempting to ameliorate the situation of non-marital children. Offering a detailed empirical and ethical critique both of 'sexual expressionism' and of the related federal programs, this study will be of interest to scholars and activists supporting children, women and the poor.

Carien Lubbe-De Beer, John Marnell
R199 Discovery Miles 1 990 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

Despite increasing visibility of same-sex relationships in South Africa, there remains a distinct lack of research and public discussion around same-sex family practices and related legislative and social issues. This new collection of essays, interviews and images seeks to address this critical information gap by both capturing recent scholarship and documenting the challenges and experiences of same-sex partnered families. By bringing together work from diverse academic and professional disciplines - as well as visual materials from two recent exhibitions - this unique collection will play a crucial role in promoting further research into LGBTI families in South Africa. Topics covered include the theory and context of LGBTI families in South Africa; the legislative framework; media representations of same-sex families; assisted reproduction technology - challenges, experiences and understandings; parenting practices; disclosure practices within families; and intimate partner violence.

Stolen Women in Medieval England - Rape, Abduction, and Adultery, 1100-1500 (Paperback): Caroline Dunn Stolen Women in Medieval England - Rape, Abduction, and Adultery, 1100-1500 (Paperback)
Caroline Dunn
R975 Discovery Miles 9 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study of illicit sexuality in medieval England explores links between marriage and sex, law and disorder, and property and power. Some medieval Englishwomen endured rape or were kidnapped for forced marriages, yet most ravished women were married and many 'wife-thefts' were not forced kidnappings but cases of adultery fictitiously framed as abduction by abandoned husbands. In pursuing the themes of illicit sexuality and non-normative marital practices, this work analyses the nuances of the key Latin term raptus and the three overlapping offences that it could denote: rape, abduction and adultery. This investigation broadens our understanding of the role of women in the legal system; provides a means for analysing male control over female bodies, sexuality and access to the courts; and reveals ways in which female agency could, on occasion, manoeuvre around such controls.

Dementia, Sex and Wellbeing - A Person-Centred Guide for People with Dementia, Their Partners, Caregivers and Professionals... Dementia, Sex and Wellbeing - A Person-Centred Guide for People with Dementia, Their Partners, Caregivers and Professionals (Paperback)
Danuta Lipinska; Foreword by Caroline Baker; Afterword by Sally Knocker
R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite being integral parts of all our identities, sexuality, sex and intimacy are what many would call the Last Taboo in dementia care, usually seen as 'problem behaviours' to be stopped and dealt with. Informed by a combination of accessible neuroscience and person-centred compassion, Danuta Lipinska's new book shows that the human need for intimacy, attachment and sexual expression is as important for supporting the wellbeing and personhood of people with dementia as communication and care. Considering the brain as the body's biggest sex organ, it examines the cognitive changes that occur in dementia and what these changes mean in the context of sexual behaviour and consent. Taking Carl Rogers' Core Conditions and Tom Kitwood's psychological needs of persons living with dementia as a starting point, Lipinska offers a unique model for person-centred conversations about sex and sexuality that we have not seen before.

Hollywood and the Female Body - A History of Idolization and Objectification (Paperback): Stephen Handzo Hollywood and the Female Body - A History of Idolization and Objectification (Paperback)
Stephen Handzo
R860 Discovery Miles 8 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the first, brief moving images of female nudes in the 1880s to the present, the motion picture camera made the female body a battleground in what we now call the culture wars. Churchmen feared the excitation of male lust; feminists decried the idealization of a body type that devalued the majority of women. This history of Hollywood's treatment of women's bodies traces the full span of the motion picture era. Primitive peepshow images of burlesque dancers gave way to the "artistic" nudity of the 1910s when model Audrey Munson and swimmer Annette Kellerman contended for the title of American Venus. Clara Bow personified the qualified sexual freedom of the 1920s flapper. Jean Harlow, Mae West and the scantily clad chorus girls of the early 1930s provoked the Legion of Decency to demand the creation of a Production Code Administration that turned saucy Betty Boop into a housewife. Things loosened up during World War II when Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth ruled the screen. The postwar years saw the blonde bombshells and "Mammary madness" of the 1950s while the 1960's brought bikini-clad sex kittens. With the replacement of the Production Code by a ratings system in 1968, nudity and sex scenes proliferated in the R-rated movies of the 1970s and 1980s. Recent movies, often directed by women, have pointed the way toward a more egalitarian future. Finally, the #MeToo movement and the fall of Harvey Weinstein have forced the industry to confront its own sexism. Each chapter of this book situates movies, famous and obscure, into the context of changes in the movie industry and the larger society.
