Worldwide supplies of sugar and cotton were impacted dramatically
as the U.S. Civil War dragged on. New areas of production entered
these lucrative markets, particularly in the South Pacific, and
plantation agriculture grew substantially in disparate areas such
as Australia, Fiji, and Hawaii. The increase in production required
an increase in labor; in the rush to fill the vacuum, freebooters
and other unsavory characters began a slave trade in Melanesians
and Polynesians that continued into the twentieth century. ""The
White Pacific"" ranges over the broad expanse of Oceania to
reconstruct the history of ""blackbirding"" (slave trading) in the
region. It examines the role of U.S. citizens (many of them
ex-slaveholders and ex-confederates) in the trade and its roots in
Civil War dislocations. What unfolds is a dramatic tale of unfree
labor, conflicts between formal and informal empire, white
supremacy, threats to sovereignty in Hawaii, the origins of a White
Australian policy, and the rise of Japan as a Pacific power and
putative protector. It also pieces together a wonderfully
suggestive history of the African American presence in the Pacific.
Based on deft archival research in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji,
Hawaii, the United States, and Great Britain, ""The White Pacific""
uncovers a heretofore hidden story of race, labor, war, and
intrigue that contributes significantly to the emerging
intersectional histories of race and ethnicity.
Trajectories of Empire extends from the beginning of the Iberian
expansion of the mid-fifteenth century, through colonialism and
slavery, and into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Latin
American republics. Its point of departure is the question of
empire and its aftermath, as reflected in the lives of contemporary
Latin Americans of African descent, and of their ancestors caught
up in the historical process of Iberian colonial expansion,
colonization, and the Atlantic slave trade. The book's chapters
explore what it's like to be Black today in the so-called racial
democracies of Brazil, Colombia, and Cuba; the role of medical
science in the objectification and nullification of Black female
personhood during slavery in Brazil in the nineteenth century; the
deployment of visual culture to support insurgency for a largely
illiterate slave body again in the nineteenth century in Cuba;
aspects of discourse that promoted the colonial project as
evangelization, or alternately offered resistance to its racialized
culture of dominance in the seventeenth century; and the
experiences of the first generations of forced African migrants
into Spain and Portugal in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries,
as the discursive template was created around their social roles as
enslaved or formerly enslaved people. Trajectories of Empire's
contributors come from the fields of literary criticism, visual
culture, history, anthropology, popular culture (rap), and cultural
studies. As the product of an interdisciplinary collective, this
book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in
Iberian or Hispanic Studies, Africana Studies, Postcolonial
Studies, and Transatlantic Studies, as well as the general public.
Contemporary craft, art and design are inseparable from the flows
of production and consumption under global capitalism. The New
Politics of the Handmade features twenty-three voices who
critically rethink the handmade in this dramatically shifting
economy. The authors examine craft within the conditions of extreme
material and economic disparity; a renewed focus on labour and
materiality in contemporary art and museums; the political
dimensions of craftivism, neoliberalism, and state power; efforts
toward urban renewal and sustainability; the use of digital
technologies; and craft's connections to race, cultural identity
and sovereignty in texts that criss-cross five continents. They
claim contemporary craft as a dynamic critical position for
understanding the most immediate political and aesthetic issues of
our time.
In Folklore Figures of French and Creole Louisiana, Nathan J.
Rabalais examines the impact of Louisiana's remarkably diverse
cultural and ethnic groups on folklore characters and motifs during
the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Establishing connections
between Louisiana and France, West Africa, Canada, and the
Antilles, Rabalais explores how folk characters, motifs, and morals
adapted to their new contexts in Louisiana. By viewing the state's
folklore in the light of its immigration history, he demonstrates
how folktales can serve as indicators of sociocultural adaptation
as well as contact among cultural communities. In particular, he
examines the ways in which collective traumas experienced by
Louisiana's major ethnic groups-slavery, the grand d? (R)rangement,
linguistic discrimination-resulted in fundamental changes in these
folktales in relation to their European and African counterparts.
Rabalais points to the development of an altered moral economy in
Cajun and Creole folktales. Conventional heroic qualities, such as
physical strength, are subverted in Louisiana folklore in favor of
wit and cunning. Analyses of Black Creole animal tales like those
of Bouki et Lapin and Tortie demonstrate the trickster hero's
ability to overcome both literal and symbolic entrapment through
cleverness. Some elements of Louisiana's folklore tradition, such
as the rougarou and cauchemar, remain an integral presence in the
state's cultural landscape, apparent in humor, popular culture,
regional branding, and children's books. Through its adaptive use
of folklore, French and Creole Louisiana will continue to retell
old stories in innovative ways as well as create new stories for
future generations.
This volume collects 50 stories of gardening invention, innovation
and discovery. Among them is that of Thomas Hyl, who in 1577
devised the first water sprinkler; Nathaniel Ward who began a craze
for indoor gardening in 1829 with his terrarium case; and Henry
Telende, who in 1720 grew England's first pineapple. From the
invention of the trellis, flower pots and the waterscrew in the
ancient world; via secateurs, jute string and flame guns in the
Victorian age; to the Gro-Bag and Flymo of modern times, the
ingenious achievements make an inspiring international collection.
This book explores the impact of violence on the religious beliefs
of front soldiers and civilians in Germany during the First World
War. The central argument is that religion was the main prism
through which men and women in the Great War articulated and
processed trauma. Inspired by trauma studies, the history of
emotions, and the social and cultural history of religion, this
book moves away from the history of clerical authorities and
institutions at war and instead focuses on the history of religion
and war 'from below.' Jason Crouthamel provides a fascinating
exploration into the language and belief systems used by ordinary
people to explain the inexplicable. From Judeo-Christian traditions
to popular beliefs and 'superstitions,' German soldiers and
civilians depended on a malleable psychological toolbox that
included a hybrid of ideas stitched together using prewar concepts
mixed with images or experiences derived from the surreal
environment of modern combat. Perhaps most interestingly, studying
the front experience exposes not only lived religion, but also how
religious beliefs are invented. Front soldiers in particular
constructed new, subjective spiritual and religious concepts based
on encounters with industrialized weapons, the sacred experience of
comradeship, and immersion in mass death, which profoundly altered
their sense of self and the supernatural. More than just a coping
mechanism, religious language and beliefs enabled victims, and
perpetrators, of violence to narrate concepts of psychological
renewal and rebirth. In the wake of defeat and revolution,
religious concepts shaped by the war experience also became a
cornerstone of visions for radical political movements, including
the National Socialists, to transform a shattered and embittered
German nation. Making use of letters between soldiers and
civilians, diaries, memoirs and front newspapers, Trauma, Religion
and Spirituality in Germany during the First World War offers a
unique glimpse into the belief systems of men and women at a
turning point in European history.
This is the first full-scale study of the world of
eighteenth-century British cookery books, their authors, their
readers and their recipes. For many decades, we have treated them
as collectables - often fetching thousands at auction and in
rare-book catalogues - or as quaint survivors, while ignoring their
true history or what they have to tell us about the Georgians at
table. The publication of cookery books was pursued more vigorously
in Britain than in any other west European country: it was also the
genre that attracted more women writers to its ranks - indeed,
perhaps the very first woman to earn her living from her writing in
modern Britain was Hannah Woolley, author of The Cook's Guide and
other works. Reason enough to look more closely at the form. This
book pursues the authors: their identity, their intentions, their
biographies; and it weighs up their audience. How far did the one
determine the other? How far did the character of the authors and
their output direct the course of British cookery during the
eighteenth century? While books advised and encouraged their
readers to cook, create and compound, the experience at table may
have been very different. The British Housewife tests the fantasy
against the reality perceived in contemporary diaries.

There is an extensive bibliography together with a long appendix
giving the full wording of the title pages of many of the cookery
books under discussion, making this an indispensable handbook as
well as a major contribution to understanding a subject we know too
little about. There are several illustrations of table layouts,
title pages and frontispieces from the original books.
The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is the site of one
of America's most famous armed struggles, but the events
surrounding Custer's defeat there in 1876 are only the beginning of
the story. As park custodians, American Indians, and others have
contested how the site should be preserved and interpreted for
posterity, the Little Bighorn has turned into a battlefield in more
ways than one. In Stricken Field, one of America's foremost
military historians offers the first comprehensive history of the
site and its administration in more than half a century.Jerome A.
Greene has produced a compelling account of one of the West's most
hallowed and controversial attractions, beginning with the battle
itself and ending with the establishment of an American Indian
memorial early in the twenty-first century. Chronicling successive
efforts of the War Department and the National Park Service to
oversee the site, Greene describes the principal issues that have
confounded its managers, from battle observances and memorials to
ongoing maintenance, visitor access, and public use. Stricken Field
is a cautionary tale. Greene elucidates the conflict between the
Park Service's dual mission to provide public access while
preserving the integrity of a historical resource. He also traces
the complex events surrounding the site, including Indian protests
in the 1970s and 1980s that ultimately contributed to the 2003
dedication of a monument finally recognizing the Lakotas, Northern
Cheyennes, and other American Indians who fought there.
