Does Social Media Have Limits? - Bodies of Light & the Desire for Omnipresence (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Camila Mozzini-Alister Does Social Media Have Limits? - Bodies of Light & the Desire for Omnipresence (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Camila Mozzini-Alister
R2,971 Discovery Miles 29 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a vibrant investigation on a deeply human subconscious desire: the desire for omnipresence, or in a nutshell, the desire to be here, there, and everywhere at the same time. After all, why is it not enough just to be in the offline ordinariness of the here and now? To answer this question, Camila Mozzini-Alister does the crossing of two seemingly distant universes: mediation and meditation. Throughout a vigorous archaeology of the relationship between screen and mind allied with an engaging first-person narrative, the author raises awareness of the risks of becoming addicted to social media and obsessed by meditation. This brings forth a vital question: what are the limits for the desire to be more than a body?

Philosophical Reflections on Disability (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): D. Christopher Ralston, Justin Ho Philosophical Reflections on Disability (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
D. Christopher Ralston, Justin Ho
R2,947 Discovery Miles 29 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This project draws together the diverse strands of the debate regarding disability in a way never before combined in a single volume. After providing a representative sampling of competing philosophical approaches to the conceptualization of disability as such, the volume goes on to address such themes as the complex interplay between disability and quality of life, questions of social justice as it relates to disability, and the personal dimensions of the disability experience.

By explicitly locating the discussion of various applied ethical questions within the broader theoretical context of how disability is best conceptualized, the volume seeks to bridge the gap between abstract philosophical musings about the nature of disease, illness and disability found in much of the philosophy of medicine literature, on the one hand, and the comparatively concrete but less philosophical discourse frequently encountered in much of the disability studies literature. It also critically examines various claims advanced by disability advocates, as well as those of their critics.

In bringing together leading scholars in the fields of moral theory, bioethics, and disability studies, this volume makes a unique contribution to the scholarly literature, while also offering a valuable resource to instructors and students interested in a text that critically examines and assesses various approaches to some of the most vexing problems in contemporary social and political philosophy.

Community and Conflict - The Sources of Liberal Solidarity (Hardcover): D. Edyvane Community and Conflict - The Sources of Liberal Solidarity (Hardcover)
D. Edyvane
R1,454 Discovery Miles 14 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Against the widespread supposition that moral conflict is undermining of community, this book argues that conflict is necessary for a liberal political community. It develops a new philosophical basis for political association at the heart of which lies an innovative account of the way in which journey narratives in literature can serve to shed light on the possibilities for solidarity in modern democratic societies.

Scientists, Democracy and Society - A Community of Inquirers (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Pierluigi Barrotta Scientists, Democracy and Society - A Community of Inquirers (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Pierluigi Barrotta
R2,800 Discovery Miles 28 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph examines the relationship between science and democracy. The author argues that there is no clear-cut division between science and the rest of society. Rather, scientists and laypeople form a single community of inquiry, which aims at the truth. To defend his theory, the author shows that science and society are both heterogeneous and fragmented. They display variable and shifting alliances between components. He also explains how information flow between science and society is bi-directional through "transactional" processes. In other words, science and society mutually define themselves. The author also explains how science is both objective and laden with values. Coverage includes a wide range of topics, such as: the ideal of value-free science, the is/ought divide, "thick terms" and the language of science, inductive risk, the dichotomy between pure science and applied science, constructivism and the philosophy of risk. It also looks at the concepts of truth and objectivity, the autonomy of science, moral and social inquiry, perfectionism and democracy, and the role of experts in democratic societies. The style is philosophical, but the book features many examples and case-studies. It will appeal to philosophers of science, those in science and technology studies as well as interested general readers.

Liberalism and Value Pluralism (Hardcover): George Crowder Liberalism and Value Pluralism (Hardcover)
George Crowder
R6,180 Discovery Miles 61 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Value pluralism is the idea, associated with the late Isaiah Berlin, that fundamental human values are irreducibly plural and incommensurable. Ends like liberty, equality and community are intrinsic goods which can neither be ranked in an absolute hierarchy nor translated into units of a common denominator. If that is true, how can we choose among such values when they come into conflict in particular cases? In particular, what reason is there to justify the value ranking characteristic of liberal democracy, favouring personal autonomy and toleration? Recent commentators have seen value pluralism as undermining the traditional claims of liberalism to universal authority, rendering it at best no more than one political form among others with no greater claim to legitimacy. Against that view, George Crowder argues that a strong distinctive case for liberalism as a universal project is implied by value pluralism itself. Reflection on the elements of value pluralism yields a set of ethical principles, including respect for universal values, rejection of political utopianism, promotion of value diversity, accommodation of reasonable disagreement, and cultivation of civic virtues. Those principles are best satisfied by a liberal form of politics characterised by a strong commitment to personal autonomy, by policies of moderate redistribution and multiculturalism, and by constitutional restraints on democractic politics. This is the first book-length defence of liberalism on the basis of value pluralism, complementing and extending the work of Berlin and others.>

War and Delusion - A Critical Examination (Hardcover): L. Calhoun War and Delusion - A Critical Examination (Hardcover)
L. Calhoun
R1,838 Discovery Miles 18 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

War and Delusion offers a fresh look at just war theory, which has dominated normative thought about war for centuries. This work examines the cultural milieu in which the just war paradigm arose and asks whether 'just war' rationalizations today constitute sound justifications or function rather as pro-military propaganda. By delving beneath the surface of the official stories written by victors to examine war's real effects--moral, psychological, and physical--upon both the perpetrators and the victims, War and Delusion reveals how the practice of modern war contradicts the most basic values and principles of modern Western democracies.

An Age of Limits - Social Theory for the 21st Century (Hardcover): R. Schroeder An Age of Limits - Social Theory for the 21st Century (Hardcover)
R. Schroeder
R1,834 Discovery Miles 18 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this ambitious and bold book, Ralph Schroeder develops a new social theory centred on the notion of limits. The current era, from the 1970s onwards, has seen a departure from the three defining trends of the modern age: the struggle for social citizenship rights, the disembedding of markets, and the transformation of nature. Based on a comparative-historical analysis, the book argues that there are now similar constraints on social development throughout the global North and beyond. These constraints include the waning of conflicts driving the extension and deepening of rights, the instability of increasing financialization, and the progressive lack of control over the exploitation of natural resources. The key challenge for social theory therefore lies in identifying the cleavages between the dominant political, economic and cultural powers, and countervailing forces that can potentially overcome them.
The book explores several advanced Western democracies in depth, as well as China and India. It will fundamentally challenge our theoretical understanding of contemporary societies and their dynamics.

Rebecca Jean Emigh, Patricia Ahmed, Dylan Riley
R1,678 Discovery Miles 16 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the history of racial classifications in Puerto Rico censuses, starting with the Spanish censuses and continuing through the US ones. Because Puerto Rican censuses were collected regularly over hundreds of years, they are fascinating "test cases" to see what census categories might have been available and effective in shaping everyday ones. Published twentieth-century censuses have been well studied, but this book also examines unpublished documents in previous centuries to understand the historical precursors of contemporary ones. State-centered theories hypothesize that censuses, especially colonial ones, have powerful transformative effects. In contrast, this book shows that such transformations are affected by the power and interests of social actors, not the strength of the state. Thus, despite hundreds of years of exposure to the official dichotomous and trichotomous census categories, these categories never replaced the continuous everyday ones because the census categories rarely coincided with Puerto Rican's interests.

Contemporary Confucianism in Thought and Action (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Guy Alitto Contemporary Confucianism in Thought and Action (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Guy Alitto
R2,674 R1,780 Discovery Miles 17 800 Save R894 (33%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume focuses on contemporary Confucianism, and collects essays by famous sinologists such as Guy Alitto, John Makeham, Tse-ki Hon and others. The content is divided into three sections - addressing the "theory" and "practice" of contemporary Confucianism, as well as how the two relate to each other - to provide readers a more meaningful understanding of contemporary Confucianism and Chinese culture. In 1921, at the height of the New Culture Movement's iconoclastic attack on Confucius, Liang Shuming ( ) fatefully predicted that in fact the future world culture would be Confucian. Over the nine decades that followed, Liang's reputation and the fortunes of Confucianism in China rose and fell together. So, readers may be interested in the question whether it is possible that a reconstituted "Confucianism" might yet become China's spiritual mainstream and a major constituent of world culture.

Kant's Practical Philosophy - From Critique to Doctrine (Hardcover, New): G. Banham Kant's Practical Philosophy - From Critique to Doctrine (Hardcover, New)
G. Banham
R2,800 Discovery Miles 28 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The discussion of Kant's Practical Philosophy has been marred by viewing it as purely formalist and centered only on the categorical imperative. This important new study sets out a much more vivid account of the nature and range of Kant's concerns demonstrating his commitment to the notion of rational religion and including extensive discussion of his treatment of evil. Culminating with accounts of property, the nature of right and virtue, this work presents Kant as a vital revolutionary thinker.

The Rise of Neo-liberalism and the Decline of Freedom (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Birsen Filip The Rise of Neo-liberalism and the Decline of Freedom (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Birsen Filip
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the relationship that prevails between the state and freedom in the works of Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek, as well as those of some of their peers, including Gary Becker, James Buchanan, and George Stigler. The author explains that their concept of freedom was largely derived from the principles and values of neo-liberalism. However, she maintains that neo-liberals never cared about providing the masses with genuine freedom; rather, they value freedom for its instrumental value in terms of facilitating the global spread of free-market capitalism. The author explains that the neo-liberal concept of freedom has been a very useful tool in promoting the superiority of free-market capitalism over centrally planned economies aimed at achieving the common good. She argues that even though neo-liberals are strongly opposed to central planning, they are tolerant of state planning intended to help establish and sustain the conditions of a free-market system. She also contends that the extensive implementation of neo-liberal reforms and policies has led to states losing their sovereignty and moving away from their traditional role of achieving the common good. The author claims that the world has essentially become the sum of many neo-liberal societies, particularly during the last four decades. She also maintains that, throughout human history, no other ideology, school of thought, political, religious or military institution, kingdom, or empire has been as successful as neo-liberalism, when it comes to shaping people's beliefs, ideals, goals, and lifestyle on a global scale. Unfortunately, neo-liberalism has proven to be very detrimental for civilization and the future of the planet. The author concludes that the widespread adoption of the neo-liberal concept of freedom, in combination with the pretense that economics is a natural, ahistorical and value-free science, has triggered the emergence of methodological monism, which has resulted in unfreedom and the poverty of economics, while also delaying the progress of the entire discipline.

Reading Hayek in the 21st Century - A Critical Inquiry into His Political Thought (Hardcover): T. Papaioannou Reading Hayek in the 21st Century - A Critical Inquiry into His Political Thought (Hardcover)
T. Papaioannou
R1,462 Discovery Miles 14 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Papaioannou offers a radical new reading of Hayek in the 21st century, arguing that the moral dimension of his political theory is based on the methodological implications of an epistemologically founded morality, a morality that must respect the natural limits of human knowledge.

The Courage of Truth (Hardcover): Graham Burchell The Courage of Truth (Hardcover)
Graham Burchell; M Foucault 1
R1,163 Discovery Miles 11 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Courage of the Truth is the last course that Michel Foucault delivered at the College de France before his death in 1984. In this course, he continues the theme of the previous year's lectures in exploring the notion of "truth-telling" in politics to establish a number of ethically irreducible conditionsbased on courage and conviction.

Transcending Postmodernism (Hardcover): M. Kaplan Transcending Postmodernism (Hardcover)
M. Kaplan; Foreword by Patrick A. Heelan; I. Hamati-Ataya
R1,831 Discovery Miles 18 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary philosophy is torn between a reliance on the pragmatic meanings of designated objects and a foundation based on formal theory. This book shows that philosophical knowledge, which no more has a terminal state than an infinite set has a last term, advances when the dialectical relationship between the two approaches is synthesized. The choice of designations is intimately related to theory and the form of theory is intimately related to the character of designated objects. The intimate dialectical relationship between theory and meaning is explored in detail in the area of international theory. The recent emphasis on realism rests on a regressive misunderstanding of the dialectical relationship between theory and practice that loses Newton's acute understanding of it, an understanding that underlies the great advances of physics, and that is lost in the contemporary social sciences.

New Uses of Bourdieu in Film and Media Studies (Hardcover): Guy Austin New Uses of Bourdieu in Film and Media Studies (Hardcover)
Guy Austin
R2,668 Discovery Miles 26 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through his influential work on cultural capital and social mobility, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has provided critical insights into the complex interactions of power, class, and culture in the modern era. Ubiquitous though Bourdieu's theories are, however, they have only intermittently been used to study some of the most important forms of cultural production today: cinema and new media. With topics ranging from film festivals and photography to constantly evolving mobile technologies, this collection demonstrates the enormous relevance that Bourdieu's key concepts hold for the field of media studies, deploying them as powerful tools of analysis and forging new avenues of inquiry in the process.

Johanna Seibt, Jesper Garsdal
R3,962 Discovery Miles 39 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Intercultural dialogue is often invoked in vague reference to a method that can build cross-cultural understanding and facilitate global policy-making. This book clarifies the theoretical foundations of intercultural dialogue and demonstrates the practical significance of intercultural value inquiry, combining the perspectives of philosophy, conflict research, religious studies, and education.

Jeff Malpas, Norelle Lickiss
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea of human dignity is central to any reflection on the nature of human worth, and has become a key concept in international and national law, in medical ethics, and in much philosophical and political theory. However, the idea is a complex one that also takes on many different forms. This collection explores the idea of human dignity as it arises within these many different domains, opening up the possibility of a multidisciplinary conversation that illuminates the concept itself, as well as the idea of the human to which it stands in an essential relation. The book is not only an intriguing and stimulating exploration of human dignity from a range of perspectives, but also provides an important resource for those who wish to take the exploration further.

The Physiology of Sexist and Racist Oppression (Hardcover): Shannon Sullivan The Physiology of Sexist and Racist Oppression (Hardcover)
Shannon Sullivan
R3,520 Discovery Miles 35 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While gender and race often are considered socially constructed, this book argues that they are physiologically constituted through the biopsychosocial effects of sexism and racism. This means that to be fully successful, critical philosophy of race and feminist philosophy need to examine not only the financial, legal, political and other forms of racist and sexism oppression, but also their physiological operations. Examining a complex tangle of affects, emotions, knowledge, and privilege, The Physiology of Sexist and Racist Oppression develops an understanding of the human body whose unconscious habits are biological. On this account, affect and emotion are thoroughly somatic, not something "mental " or extra-biological layered on top of the body. They also are interpersonal, social, and can be transactionally transmitted between people. Ranging from the stomach and the gut to the hips and the heart, from autoimmune diseases to epigenetic markers, Sullivan demonstrates the gastrointestinal effects of sexual abuse that disproportionately affect women, often manifesting as IBS, Crohn's disease, or similar functional disorders. She also explores the transgenerational effects of racism via epigenetic changes in African American women, who experience much higher pre-term birth rates than white women do, and she reveals the unjust benefits for heart health experienced by white people as a result of their racial privilege. Finally, developing the notion of a physiological therapy that doesn't prioritize bringing unconscious habits to conscious awareness, Sullivan closes with a double-barreled approach for both working for institutional change and transforming biologically unconscious habits. The Physiology of Sexist and Racist Oppression skillfully combines feminist and critical philosophy of race with the biological and health sciences. The result is a critical physiology of race and gender that offers new strategies for fighting male and white privilege.

The Cost of Free Speech - Pornography, Hate Speech, and their Challenge to Liberalism (Hardcover): A. Levin The Cost of Free Speech - Pornography, Hate Speech, and their Challenge to Liberalism (Hardcover)
A. Levin
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The distinctly contemporary proliferation of pornography and hate speech poses a challenge to liberalism's traditional ideal of a 'marketplace of ideas' facilitated by state neutrality about the content of speech. This new study argues that the liberal state ought to depart from neutrality to meet this challenge.

The Constitution of Bangladesh - People, Politics and Judicial Intervention (Paperback): Arafat Hosen Khan The Constitution of Bangladesh - People, Politics and Judicial Intervention (Paperback)
Arafat Hosen Khan
R1,097 Discovery Miles 10 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the Constitution of Bangladesh. It traces the sociopolitical and legal context of its birth in the aftermath of a violent Independence War, through to the seventeen amendments to date as Bangladesh evolved through military coups and dictatorships, shifting alliances between religious and political parties, and the emergence of development state. Aimed at readers who are keen to understand the underpinnings of the constitutional system, its evolution, and the politics behind the scenes, the book will explore the impact of political bargains and extra-legal developments on the evolution of the Constitution instead of treating it as a standalone doctrine. By focusing on the overall sociopolitical context up until 2020, the book departs from the dominant tendency in legal scholarship to restrict attention to the development of the Constitution from its inception to the modern day. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of law, politics and South Asian studies.
