Skewed to the Right - Sport, Mental Health and Vulnerability (Paperback): Amy Izycky Skewed to the Right - Sport, Mental Health and Vulnerability (Paperback)
Amy Izycky
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Features interviews with Graeme Fowler (England cricketer), Nigel Owens (Welsh International Rugby Union referee), Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson (Paralympian), Kieren Emery (GB lightweight rower), Mark Enright (jockey), Michelle Bergstrand (British cyclo-cross champion), Luke Stoltman (five-times Scotland's Strongest Man), Jack Rutter (Paralympian and England cerebral palsy football captain), and Ruth Walczak (GB Lightweight Rower). The demands of the high-performance athlete are huge, with many celebrated for their achievements, and put on a pedestal for admired personality traits such as discipline, sacrifice, commitment, and focus. This book seeks to explore the celebrated traits of the high-performance athlete and, by doing so, to increase awareness of the vulnerability that such traits also present. Through discussion with professional sports people and presentation of their own personal stories the book explores obsessionality, masochism, and focus, and how these characteristics can enhance performance on the field yet hinder life off it and may even develop into clinically diagnosable mental health difficulties. In psychology, assessments are based on statistical phenomena; the title Skewed to the Right is based on the 'bell curve' that is shown through a graph whereby the majority sit in the middle with a few clusters at either on of the extremes. The suggestion is that elite athletes are 'skewed to the right' on a number of key traits that put them between the 'general' population and those with a clinical diagnosis. The book opens with an exploration of weight-restricted sport and how making weight is achieved through practices that become culturally acceptable in the sporting world yet would be seen to be classified as clinically diagnosable eating disorders in the medical world. It then moves on to personality traits that help and hinder - those skewed to the right: masochism, obsessionality, and focus. Part 3 looks at one trait skewed to the left - acceptance - that many sportspeople struggle with. The book closes with a section exploring points of vulnerability for all athletes and ends with a look at where we can go from here. The aim of the book is to increase social awareness of the reality of life for the successful high-performance athlete and the challenging dynamics that exist in sporting culture today. It will be of interest to psychologists, psychotherapists, trainees, and anyone with an interest in sporting culture.

The chapters included in this book, edited by world-renowned scholars Tsung-Min Hung, Ronnie Lidor, and Dieter Hackfort, discuss various theoretical and practical issues related to the use of psychological programs in elite individual and team sports. The objectives of the book are threefold: to examine theoretical and practical aspects of the use of psychological preparation in elite sports; to present the psychological interventions, strategies, and techniques utilised by experienced sport psychology consultants who have worked with elite athletes for many years; to describe the philosophies of consultation, procedures to be used, and consultation frameworks of sport psychology consultants working with elite athletes from different cultures, regions, and continents around the globe. The knowledge gleaned from this book can be used in psychological preparations aimed to help elite athletes in individual and team sports improve their psychological skills and mental readiness for practices, games, and competitions.

Becoming a True Athlete - A Practical Philosophy for Flourishing Through Sport (Paperback): Laurence Halsted Becoming a True Athlete - A Practical Philosophy for Flourishing Through Sport (Paperback)
Laurence Halsted
R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

There is a looming existential crisis for competitive sport. We are witnessing a waning trust in the integrity of sport at all levels that stems from the win-at-all-costs culture that has become so pervasive, worldwide. Doping, fraud, corruption and inhumane high-performance systems as well as worrying levels of dropout, burnout and mental health problems among athletes, all points to the fact that sport has lost track of its true meaning and is increasingly out of touch with its core values. What is needed is a powerful counterpoint to this results-focussed culture, one which goes far deeper than the superficial realm of wins, losses, medals and fame, and that provides a roadmap for athletes to discover deeper meaning and achieve more in their sporting lives. The True Athlete Philosophy is that counterpoint. This is an approach that harnesses the best of sport - the persistent drive for excellence, constant innovation, unmatched opportunities for personal development - and puts it firmly in service of the participants and society as a whole. Sport can be a tremendous tool for unlocking potential and thriving in life, but currently it is not coming close to delivering on that promise. Drawing on a combination of ancient wisdom and modern psychology, The True Athlete Philosophy explores how athletes can harness their lived experience of sport to contribute to a healthy, meaningful and fulfilled life and be of greater benefit to their community.

In Ninety Percent Mental, Bob Tewksbury shows readers a side of the game only he can provide, given his singular background as both a longtime MLB pitcher and a mental skills coach for two of the sport's most fabled franchises, the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants. Fans watching the game on television or even at the stadium don't have access to the mind games a pitcher must play in order to get through an at-bat, an inning, a game. Tewksbury explores the fascinating psychology behind baseball, such as how players use techniques of imagery, self-awareness, and strategic thinking to maximize performance, and how a pitcher's strategy changes throughout a game. He also offers an in-depth look into some of baseball's most monumental moments and intimate anecdotes from a "who's who" of the game, including legendary players who Tewksbury played with and against (such as Mark McGwire, Craig Biggio, and Greg Maddux), game-changing managers and executives (Joe Torre, Bruce Bochy, Brian Sabean) and current star players (Jon Lester, Anthony Rizzo, Andrew Miller, Rich Hill). With Tewksbury's esoteric knowledge as a thinking-fan's player and his expertise as a "baseball whisperer", this entertaining book is perfect for any fan who wants to see the game in a way he or she has never seen it before. Ninety Percent Mental will deliver an unprecedented look at the mound games and mind games of Major League Baseball.

Handbook of Disability Sport and Exercise Psychology (Hardcover): Jeffrey J. Martin Handbook of Disability Sport and Exercise Psychology (Hardcover)
Jeffrey J. Martin
R3,381 Discovery Miles 33 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Historically, very few sport and exercise psychologists and professionals from related fields such as disability and rehabilitation have conducted thorough research on individuals with disabilities engaged in sport and exercise. The tide is turning, however, as growing media attention and familiarity with the Paralympics and the Wounded Warrior Project begins capturing the attention of researchers everywhere. By addressing this gap, Jeffrey J. Martin's compelling Handbook of Disability Sport and Exercise Psychology is one of the first comprehensive overviews of this important field of study. In this volume, Martin, an accomplished professor of exercise psychology, shines a light on a variety of topics ranging from the philosophy, athletic identity, participation motivation, quality of life, social and environmental barriers, body image, and intellectual impairments among many others. Based on the author's own experience and insight, a majority of these topic discussions are accompanied by thoughtful directions for future research and exploration. Designed to spark conversation and initiate new avenues of research, the Handbook of Disability Sport and Exercise Psychology will allow for readers to look outside the traditional literature focusing solely on able-bodied individuals and, instead, develop a much larger perspective on sport and exercise psychology today.

Herding Cats - The Art of Amateur Cricket Captaincy (Paperback): Charlie Campbell Herding Cats - The Art of Amateur Cricket Captaincy (Paperback)
Charlie Campbell 1
R406 R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Save R37 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In 1985 Mike Brearley published The Art of Captaincy, revealing how he steered Middlesex and England to victory with his team of first-class cricketers. He got the absolute best out of his players, inspiring Ian Botham to new heights against the Australians in 1981. Few cricketers have had a greater impact on the amateur game than these two. Every captain would love Brearley's degree in people, as well as a hardhitting all-rounder like Botham. But theirs was a barely recognisable game from the one we play on often dishevelled grounds up and down the country with ragtag teams of ageing, deluded or hungover friends and acquaintances. Now, Charlie Campbell offers us a New Testament to Brearley's Old Testament, as he guides us through the realities of captaining an amateur team. Herding Cats picks its way through the minefield of an amateur's season: from the excitement and hope of pre-season nets, to the desperate scramble to gather 11 players for a frosty game on a far-flung, desolate pitch; from decoding the casual phrase 'I bat a bit', to setting a field of players who can't catch or throw; from handling the most delicate egos, to dealing with a case of the yips; from frequent moments of despair, to sudden and joyful glimpses of unexpected glory. For all those of us who recognise ourselves, our teammates, our friends and partners in the shambling joy of amateur cricket more than in the top-class international game, Campbell lights a path through a weekend world of play at the beating heart of the world's second most popular sport.

Very Brief Psychotherapy (Hardcover): James P. Gustafson Very Brief Psychotherapy (Hardcover)
James P. Gustafson
R3,801 Discovery Miles 38 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology are increasingly driven by the economics of the HMO or Mental Health Center, practitioners in any setting, whether it be private practice or university clinic, are now forced to develop more concrete procedures and models in order to practice more efficiently. This book presents a set of procedures for brief therapy that are based entirely on the four common dynamics of psychiatry. By following the model set forth in this book, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and mental health workers will be able to build an entire brief therapy program based upon the initial conditions for each patient.
The first of the four procedures is to block and contain either the eruption of anxiety or collapse of depression in a patient, usually through pharmacological intervention. Once the anxiety and/or depression has been temporarily contained, the patient will be able to function through the rest of the therapeutic process. The second procedure is to identify and isolate the step that leads up to the eruption of anxiety or collapse of depression, thus allowing the patient to avoid walking into similar situations that lead to catastrophe. Thirdly, the practitioner works with the patient to help her realize that there is always a step in the opposite direction from the old step, one that used to be suppressed by the oncoming anxiety or depression. The identity of this new step will release the patient from the traps of the old patterns, and will free her to enter into a new trajectory. The fourth procedure is to notice that the old step had locked the patient into a (seemingly) inescapable trap, but that any newstep(s) taken will also carry with them the potential for further anxiety and depression. The completion of this final procedure should allow the patient to see that mental health comes from the combined ability to avoid the pitfalls of old steps, while accepting the inherent risks in taking new steps. The success of this brief therapy model is fully realized when a recovered patient begins to fall into a new trap, and can duplicate this process on her own.

A Moral Theory of Sports (Hardcover): Richard J. Severson A Moral Theory of Sports (Hardcover)
Richard J. Severson
R2,933 Discovery Miles 29 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The breadth of our moral experience is more extensive than has been believed over the past several millennia. There is more to morality than being honest and good, or aspiring to universal principles. In fact, in many ways the morality of our distant ancestors bears a remarkable resemblance to the moral experiences of modern athletes. In A Moral Theory of Sports, ethicist Richard J. Severson brings together stories from today's sports world and the moral practices of hunter-gatherers to shed new light on both sports and morality. Guided by anthropologists, biologists, neuroscientists, and others, Severson discuss what the moral life actually looked like for hunter-gatherer bands in the late Pleistocene epoch and argues that the championing of group success that was the epitome of their morality is the epitome of modern sports, as well. With fascinating analogies and anecdotes from football, basketball, tennis, cycling, and more, A Moral Theory of Sports offers a unique interpretation of human nature and our love affair with sports.

Recovery and Stress in Sport - A Manual for Testing and Assessment (Paperback): Michael Kellmann, Sarah Koelling Recovery and Stress in Sport - A Manual for Testing and Assessment (Paperback)
Michael Kellmann, Sarah Koelling
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Balancing training, stress, and recovery is essential for achieving optimal performance. The performance of professional athletes can be severely compromised by overtraining, injuries, prolonged periods of competition, or even life events outside their sporting lives. The current recovery-stress state depends on preceding stress and recovery activities, but through simultaneous assessment of stress and recovery, a differentiated picture can be provided. This manual includes two measurement instruments to gauge individual recovery, enabling both athletes and coaches to better understand the often-unconscious processes that impinge upon peak performance, and to monitor the physical, mental, emotional, mental, and overall recovery-stress state before and after training. The Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS) and the Short Recovery and Stress Scale (SRSS) are instruments that systematically enlighten the recovery-stress states of athletes. Through utilization of the ARSS and the SRSS, athletes and coaches can better understand the importance of daily activities, including how they can relate to stress/recovery and the direct impact on athletic performance. In addition to the instruments themselves, both of which are simple and easy to use, the manual also discusses their development, their basis in theory, and case studies showcasing their usage. The ARSS and the SRSS provide important information regarding the current recovery-stress state during the process of training, and are essential tools for coaches, sport scientists, sport psychologists, and athletes alike.

R1,527 Discovery Miles 15 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This brief highlights the association of different performance variables that influences archery performance and the employment of different machine learning algorithms in the identification of potential archers. The sport of archery is often associated with a myriad of performance indicators namely bio-physiological, psychological, anthropometric as well as physical fitness. Traditionally, the determination of potential archers is carried out by means of conventional statistical techniques. Nonetheless, such methods often fall short in associating non-linear relationships between the variables. This book explores the notion of machine learning that is capable of mitigating the aforesaid issue. This book is valuable for coaches and managers in identifying potential archers during talent identification programs.

Sexual Abuse in Sport - A Qualitative Case Study (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Helen Owton Sexual Abuse in Sport - A Qualitative Case Study (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Helen Owton
R1,727 Discovery Miles 17 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about sexual abuse in sport, and specifically about one girl's experience of long-term chronic abuse in sport. A 'non-conventional' approach is employed to explore the experiences of a female athlete named Bella who was groomed, sexually abused by her male coach, and then subjected to years of athlete domestic violence. Through a collaborative auto-ethnography process, these experiences are reported through vignettes and selected poems seeking to involve the reader in the grooming process of a young female athlete, so that they might react from the different social positions they currently occupy. Bella's story acts as a pedagogical resource in ways that stimulate ethical discussions and enhance knowledge of sexual abuse in sport, by assisting those involved to better understand their own 'field' and the dynamics of abuse within it, in order to develop effective abuse prevention strategies.
