Shadow - the architectural power of withholding light (Paperback): Simon Unwin Shadow - the architectural power of withholding light (Paperback)
Simon Unwin
R790 Discovery Miles 7 900 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. Shadows may be insubstantial but they are, nevertheless, an important element in architecture. In prehistoric times we sought shade as a refuge from the hot sun and chilling rain. Through history architects have used shadows to draw, to mould form, to paint pictures, to orchestrate atmosphere, to indicate the passing of time ... as well as to identify place. Sometimes shadow can be the substance of architecture.

About Architecture - An Essential Guide in 55 Buildings (Hardcover): Hugh Pearman About Architecture - An Essential Guide in 55 Buildings (Hardcover)
Hugh Pearman
R985 R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Save R209 (21%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

About Architecture is an engaging introduction to architecture, exploring the ways in which we construct our built environment, and why. Hugh Pearman guides us through the architecture that shapes our lives—from how our towns and cities are organized, to where we live, learn and work, and how we get around, interact with others, and relax. Organized by type—from civic spaces, to homes, offices, and museums—the clear and straightforward structure demystifies the many styles and functions of architecture. Pearman explores how architecture responds to our changing lifestyles and how some buildings evolve or find new uses. He demonstrates that while there is endless variety within each building type, the essence of architecture—the way buildings serve their users—remains surprisingly constant.   Through 55 fascinating international examples, from antiquity to the present day, About Architecture reveals the intriguing stories of the buildings that explain our world.

Architecture and the Mimetic Self - A Psychoanalytic Study of How Buildings Make and Break Our Lives (Paperback): Lucy Huskinson Architecture and the Mimetic Self - A Psychoanalytic Study of How Buildings Make and Break Our Lives (Paperback)
Lucy Huskinson
R1,125 Discovery Miles 11 250 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Buildings shape our identity and sense of self in profound ways that are not always evident to architects and town planners, or even to those who think they are intimately familiar with the buildings they inhabit. Architecture and the Mimetic Self provides a useful theoretical guide to our unconscious behaviour in relation to buildings, and explains both how and why we are drawn to specific elements and features of architectural design. It reveals how even the most uninspiring of buildings can be modified to meet our unconscious expectations and requirements of them-and, by the same token, it explores the repercussions for our wellbeing when buildings fail to do so. Criteria for effective architectural design have for a long time been grounded in utilitarian and aesthetic principles of function, efficiency, cost, and visual impact. Although these are important considerations, they often fail to meet the fundamental needs of those who inhabit and use buildings. Misconceptions are rife, not least because our responses to architecture are often difficult to measure, and are in large part unconscious. By bridging psychoanalytic thought and architectural theory, Architecture and the Mimetic Self frees the former from its preoccupations with interpersonal human relations to address the vital relationships that we establish with our nonhuman environments. In addition to providing a guide to the unconscious behaviours that are most relevant for evaluating architectural design, this book explains how our relationships with the built environment inform a more expansive and useful psychoanalytic theory of human relationship and identity. It will appeal to psychoanalysts and analytical psychologists, architects, and all who are interested in the overlaps of psychology, architecture, and the built environment.

The New Urban Condition - Criticism and Theory from Architecture and Urbanism (Hardcover): Leandro Medrano, Tom Avermaete, Luiz... The New Urban Condition - Criticism and Theory from Architecture and Urbanism (Hardcover)
Leandro Medrano, Tom Avermaete, Luiz Recaman
R4,160 Discovery Miles 41 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores new architectural and design perspectives on the contemporary urban condition. While architects and urban designers have long maintained that their actions, drawings, and buildings are "post-critical," this book seeks to expand the critical dimension of architecture and urbanism. In a series of historical and theoretical studies, this book examines how the materialities, forms, and practices of architecture and urban design can act as a critique towards the new urban condition. It proposes not only new concepts and theories but also instruments of analysis and reflection to better understand the current counter-hegemonic tendencies in both disciplinary strategies and appropriation tactics. The diversely international selection of chapters, from Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United States, and the Netherlands, combine different theoretical and empirical perspectives into a new analysis of the city and architecture. Demonstrating the need for new critical urban and architectural thinking that engages with the challenges and processes of the contemporary urban condition, this volume will be a thought-provoking read for academics and students in architecture, urban design, geography, political science, and more.

The Tender Detail - Ornament and Sentimentality in the Architecture of Louis H. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright (Paperback):... The Tender Detail - Ornament and Sentimentality in the Architecture of Louis H. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright (Paperback)
Daniel E. Snyder
R806 Discovery Miles 8 060 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Tender Detail tells a story about repression, sentimentality, sexuality, and ornament in architecture. The protagonists are Louis H. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, two of the most important architects and designers in American history. Interweaving close readings of their buildings and writings with wide-ranging discussions across the fields of architecture, sexuality, gender, and philosophy, the book explores how both men worked to solve the problem of ornamentation. It shows how their solutions, while widely different, were both intimately rooted in the tender emotions of sentimentality. Viewing ornament in this way sheds new light on Sullivan and Wright's artistic intentions, and reveals much about the role of affect, the value of beauty in architecture, and the agency and ontology of objects. Illuminated by personal stories from their respective autobiographies, which add a level of human interest unusual in an academic work, The Tender Detail is a readable and rigorous architectural history which sheds fresh light on Sullivan and Wright's relationship, their work, and on the nature of ornament itself.

Mapping the Global Architect of Alterity - Practice, Representation and Education (Paperback, New): Michael Jenson Mapping the Global Architect of Alterity - Practice, Representation and Education (Paperback, New)
Michael Jenson
R1,189 Discovery Miles 11 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Due to globalization, cultural spaces are now developing with no tangible connection to geographical place. The territorial logic traditionally used to underpin architecture and envision our built environment is being radically altered, forcing the adoption of a new method of conceptualizing space/geography and what constitutes architectural practice. Construction techniques, design sensibilities, and cultural identities are being transformed as technology transports us to places that were previously unreachable. The resultant "globalized" architect must become more than just an artful visionary, but also a master of the art of the political nudge willing to act within multiple mediums and at the simultaneous scales of a chaotic new world disorder. Though fearless they must also be responsible, inherently understanding the necessity to align bold visions with the mundane details of the everyday in ways that are culturally flexible and accepting of change. The potential for what must be considered the legitimate practice of the architect must move from a purely material venue to one more directly engaged in the chaos of the larger economic, political, and social spheres of a globalizing world. The issues and possible interactions with globalization contained in this text exemplify ways that architecture is transforming into a more flexible and fluid interdisciplinary version of its traditional self in order to rise to challenges of this new international terrain. A theme runs throughout in the form of a call: that architects must conceptually re-construct their frames of reference to better align with the demands of a rapidly globalizing world.

Theories of the Digital in Architecture (Paperback, New): Rivka Oxman, Robert Oxman Theories of the Digital in Architecture (Paperback, New)
Rivka Oxman, Robert Oxman
R2,071 Discovery Miles 20 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the form of a critical anthology," " this book interlaces an ensemble of seminal articles by leading figures in the theory and practice of digital design with a series of original theoretical texts. It develops a meta-theory of the emerging interactions of media technologies and design in architecture. This theory is promoted as a foundation of transformations in design methods as well as a basis for the evolution of new forms of design thinking.

The development of an explication of emerging concepts in the form of a new taxonomy is an important contribution in any form of discourse analysis. "Theories of the Digital in Architecture" attempts to develop such a conceptual orientation for the growing impact of the integration of digital media technologies in design. It locates these conceptual structures within a historical perspective that identifies the coming into being of a new epistemology of the digital in architecture.

Lee Seung-Yeon
R2,938 Discovery Miles 29 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Seon (Zen) Buddhism was first introduced to Korea around Korea's late Silla and early Goryeo eras, the function of the "beopdang" (Dharma hall) was transfused to the lecture hall found in ancient Buddhist temples, establishing a pivotal area within the temple compound called the "upper monastic area." By exploring the structural formation and dissolution of the upper monastic area, the author shows how Korea established its own distinctive Seon temples, unlike those of China and Japan, in the course of assimilating a newly-introduced foreign culture as its own. To accomplish this, the author analyzed the inscriptions on stone monuments which recorded the lives of eminent monks and also numerous excavated temple ruins. These analyses give us a new perspective on the evolution of the upper monastic area, which had the beopdang as its center, at a time when early Seon temples were being established under very adverse and unstable circumstances. The exploration of the spatial organization and layout of Korean Seon temple architecture has illuminated the continuity between Korean Buddhist temples of both the ancient and medieval eras.

The Territories of Identity - Architecture in the Age of Evolving Globalization (Paperback, New): Soumyen Bandyopadhyay,... The Territories of Identity - Architecture in the Age of Evolving Globalization (Paperback, New)
Soumyen Bandyopadhyay, Guillermo Garma Montiel
R1,743 Discovery Miles 17 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The expedited globalised process of exchange and new forms of cultural production have transformed old established notions of identity, calling into question their conceptual foundations. This book explores the spatial and representational dimension of this phenomenon, by addressing how the reshaping of the key themes of place, architecture and memory are altering the nature, as well as, our understanding of identity. Cutting across boundaries, the book drives discussion of identity beyond the well-worn concern for its loss within a globalised context, and importantly provides links between identity, place, memory and representation in architecture. Examining a range of case studies from Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Singapore, as well as with contributions cutting across geographical and temporal boundaries, this volume addresses such issues as architecture technology, place and memory - critical issues in the monitoring and mapping of identity shift within a rapidly globalising context. With contributions from renowned authors in the field including Nicholas Temple, Patsy Hely, Robert Brown, Liane Lefaivre, John Hendrix, Ana Souto, Fiona MacLaren, Stephen Walker, Nezar AlSayyad, Andrzej Piotrowski, Catherine Ettinger, Luz Marie Rodriguez, and Raymond Quek this book presents fresh insights and diverse perspectives on the evolving question of identity and globalisation.

Team 10: An Archival History (Paperback, New): Annie Pedret Team 10: An Archival History (Paperback, New)
Annie Pedret
R1,713 Discovery Miles 17 130 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This early history of Team 10 and the group's emergence from CIAM (International Congress of Modern Architecture ) shifts the locus of the group's importance from their better-known projects of the 1960s and 70s to the group's more theoretically intense period of the late 1940s and 50s. Extensive archival research reveals another story of Team 10 thinking than the one's portrayed by CIAM and Team 10 member Alison Smithson, which historians have been echoing, in one way or another, ever since. Offered here is a theoretical framework for understanding the new values that were introduced to modern architecture in postwar CIAM and the common ground that allowed this diverse group of architects and with disparate approaches to be considered, "first and foremost," modern.

Essential reading for anyone interested in a deeper and nuanced understanding of the theoretical context architects have been practicing in since the 1950s, this account blurs the boundaries between modernism and postmodernism, and reveals the important role played by representation in establishing and changing ideologies, institutions, and power structures.

Space Matters - Exploring Spatial Theory and Practice Today (Hardcover): Lukas Feireiss Space Matters - Exploring Spatial Theory and Practice Today (Hardcover)
Lukas Feireiss
R1,039 R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Save R217 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the subject of earnest discussion, the meaning of space reaches far beyond the horizon of a single discipline. Lukas Feiriss has assembled a collection of international contributions for Space Matters, a publication of the space & design strategies study program of the Univeristy of Art and Design, Linz, Austria to create an inspiring expansion of the contemporary discourse on space. The publication addresses cultural resarchers and readers in creative professions - architects, artists, curators, scientists and students in all the related fields as well as those members of a broader audience that are interested in the incorporation of space and the pratices with which it is designed in cultural, social and humanities-oriented contexts.

An Anthropology of Architecture (Paperback, New): Victor Buchli An Anthropology of Architecture (Paperback, New)
Victor Buchli
R1,163 Discovery Miles 11 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ever since anthropology has existed as a discipline, anthropologists have thought about architectural forms. This book provides the first overview of how anthropologists have studied architecture and the extraordinarily rich thought and data this has produced. With a focus on domestic space - that intimate context in which anthropologists traditionally work - the book explains how anthropologists think about public and private boundaries, gender, sex and the body, the materiality of architectural forms and materials, building technologies and architectural representations. Each chapter uses a broad range of case studies from around the world to examine from within anthropology what architecture 'does' - how it makes people and shapes, sustains and unravels social relations. An Anthropology of Architecture is key reading for students of anthropology, material culture, geography, sociology, architectural theory, design and city planning.

Nexus Network Journal 14,3 - Architecture and Mathematics (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Kim Williams Nexus Network Journal 14,3 - Architecture and Mathematics (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Kim Williams
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Winter 2012 (vol. 14 no. 3) issue of the Nexus Network Journal features seven original papers dedicated to the theme "Digital Fabrication". Digital fabrication is changing architecture in fundamental ways in every phase, from concept to artifact. Projects growing out of research in digital fabrication are dependent on software that is entirely surface-oriented in its underlying mathematics. Decisions made during design, prototyping, fabrication and assembly rely on codes, scripts, parameters, operating systems and software, creating the need for teams with multidisciplinary expertise and different skills, from IT to architecture, design, material engineering, and mathematics, among others The papers grew out of a Lisbon symposium hosted by the ISCTE-Instituto Universitario de Lisboa entitled "Digital Fabrication - A State of the Art". The issue is completed with four other research papers which address different mathematical instruments applied to architecture, including geometric tracing systems, proportional systems, descriptive geometry and correspondence analysis. The issue concludes with a book review.

Foucault for Architects (Paperback, New): Gordana Fontana Giusti Foucault for Architects (Paperback, New)
Gordana Fontana Giusti
R950 Discovery Miles 9 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the mid-1960s onwards Michel Foucault has had a significant impact on diverse aspects of culture, knowledge and arts including architecture and its critical discourse. The implications for architecture have been wide-ranging. His archaeological and genealogical approaches to knowledge have transformed architectural history and theory, while his attitude to arts and aesthetics led to a renewed focus on the avant-garde. Prepared by an architect, this book offers an excellent entry point into the remarkable work of Michel Foucault, and provides a focused introduction suitable for architects, urban designers, and students of architecture. Foucault's crucial juxtaposition of space, knowledge and power has unlocked novel spatial possibilities for thinking about design in architecture and urbanism. While the philosopher's ultimate attention on the issues of body and sexuality has defined our understanding of the possibilities and limits of human condition and its relation to architecture. The book concentrates on a number of historical and theoretical issues often addressed by Foucault that have been grouped under the themes of archaeology, enclosure, bodies, spatiality and aesthetics in order to examine and demonstrate their relevancy for architectural knowledge, its history and its practice.

Political Theory and Architecture (Paperback): Duncan Bell, Bernardo Zacka Political Theory and Architecture (Paperback)
Duncan Bell, Bernardo Zacka
R964 Discovery Miles 9 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What can political theory teach us about architecture, and what can it learn from paying closer attention to architecture? The essays assembled in this volume begin from a common postulate: that architecture is not merely a backdrop to political life but a political force in its own right. Each in their own way, they aim to give countenance to that claim, and to show how our thinking about politics can be enriched by reflecting on the built environment. The collection advances four lines of inquiry, probing the connection between architecture and political regimes; examining how architecture can be constitutive of the ethical and political realm; uncovering how architecture is enmeshed in logics of governmentality and in the political economy of the city; and asking to what extent we can think of architecture-tributary as it is to the flows of capital-as a partially autonomous social force. Taken together, the essays demonstrate the salience of a range of political theoretical approaches for the analysis of architecture, and show that architecture deserves a place as an object of study in political theory, alongside institutions, laws, norms, practices, imaginaries, and discourses.

Fractal Geometry in Architecture and Design (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996): Carl Bovill Fractal Geometry in Architecture and Design (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)
Carl Bovill
R2,948 Discovery Miles 29 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

na broad sense Design Science is the grammar of a language of images Irather than of words. Modern communication techniques enable us to transmit and reconstitute images without needing to know a specific verbal sequence language such as the Morse code or Hungarian. International traffic signs use international image symbols which are not specific to any particular verbal language. An image language differs from a verbal one in that the latter uses a linear string of symbols, whereas the former is multi dimensional. Architectural renderings commonly show projections onto three mutual ly perpendicular planes, or consist of cross sections at different altitudes capa ble of being stacked and representing different floor plans. Such renderings make it difficult to imagine buildings comprising ramps and other features which disguise the separation between floors, and consequently limit the cre ative process of the architect. Analogously, we tend to analyze natural struc tures as if nature had used similar stacked renderings, rather than, for instance, a system of packed spheres, with the result that we fail to perceive the system of organization determining the form of such structures. Perception is a complex process. Our senses record; they are analogous to audio or video devices. We cannot, however, claim that such devices perceive.

The Contradiction Between Form and Function in Architecture (Paperback, New): John Shannon Hendrix The Contradiction Between Form and Function in Architecture (Paperback, New)
John Shannon Hendrix
R1,710 Discovery Miles 17 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Continuing the themes that have been addressed in The Humanities in Architectural Design and The Cultural Role of Architecture, this book illustrates the important role that a contradiction between form and function plays in compositional strategies in architecture. The contradiction between form and function is seen as a device for poetic expression, for the expression of ideas, in architecture. Here the role of the terms "form" and "function" are analyzed throughout the history of architecture and architectural theory, from Vitruvius to the present, with particular emphasis on twentieth-century functionalism. Historical examples are given from Ancient, Classical, Islamic, Christian, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Neoclassical architecture, and from movements in the twentieth century to the present. In addition philosophical issues such as lineamenti, Vorstellung, differance, dream construction, deep structure and surface structure, topology theory, self-generation, and immanence are explored in relation to the compositions and writings of architects throughout history. This book contributes to the project of re-establishing architecture as a humanistic discipline, to re-establish an emphasis on the expression of ideas, and on the ethical role of architecture to engage the intellect of the observer and to represent human identity.

Modern Architecture Since 1900 (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): William J.R. Curtis Modern Architecture Since 1900 (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
William J.R. Curtis
R1,325 Discovery Miles 13 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since its first publication in 1982, Modern Architecture Since 1900 has become established as a contemporary classic. Worldwide in scope, it combines a clear historical outline with masterly analysis and interpretation. Technical, economic, social and intellectual developments are brought together in a comprehensive narrative which provides a setting for the detailed examination of buildings. Throughout the book the author's focus is on the individual architect, and on the qualities that give outstanding buildings their lasting value. For the third edition, the text has been radically revised and expanded, incorporating much new material and a fresh appreciation of regional identity and variety. Seven chapters are entirely new, including expanded coverage of recent world architecture. Described by James Ackerman of Harvard University as 'immeasurably the finest work covering this field in existence', this book presents a penetrating analysis of the modern tradition and its origins, tracing the creative interaction between old and new that has generated such an astonishing richness of architectural forms across the world and throughout the century.

Galileo Engineer (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Matteo Valleriani Galileo Engineer (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Matteo Valleriani
R2,973 Discovery Miles 29 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), his life and his work have been and continue to be the subject of an enormous number of scholarly works. One of the con- quences of this is the proliferation of identities bestowed on this gure of the Italian Renaissance: Galileo the great theoretician, Galileo the keen astronomer, Galileo the genius, Galileo the physicist, Galileo the mathematician, Galileo the solitary thinker, Galileo the founder of modern science, Galileo the heretic, Galileo the courtier, Galileo the early modern Archimedes, Galileo the Aristotelian, Galileo the founder of the Italian scienti c language, Galileo the cosmologist, Galileo the Platonist, Galileo the artist and Galileo the democratic scientist. These may be only a few of the identities that historians of science have associated with Galileo. And now: Galileo the engineer! That Galileo had so many faces, or even identities, seems hardly plausible. But by focusing on his activities as an engineer, historians are able to reassemble Galileo in a single persona, at least as far as his scienti c work is concerned. The impression that Galileo was an ingenious and isolated theoretician derives from his scienti c work being regarded outside the context in which it originated.

Gadamer for Architects (Paperback): Paul Kidder Gadamer for Architects (Paperback)
Paul Kidder
R946 Discovery Miles 9 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Providing a concise and accessible introduction to the work of the celebrated twentieth century German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer, this book focuses on the aspects of Gadamer's philosophy that have been the most influential among architects, educators in architecture, and architectural theorists. Gadamer's philosophy of art gives a special place to the activity of "play" as it occurs in artistic creation. His reflections on meaning and symbolism in art draw upon his teacher, Martin Heidegger, while moving Heidegger's thought in new directions. His theory of interpretation, or "philosophical hermeneutics," offers profound ways to understand the influence of the past upon the present and to appropriate cultural history in ever new forms. For architects, architectural theorists, architectural historians, and students in these fields, Gadamer's thought opens a world of possibilities for understanding how building today can be rich with human meaning, relating to architecture's history in ways that do not merely repeat nor repudiate that history. In addition, Gadamer's sensitivity to the importance of practical thinking - to the way that theory arises out of practice - gives his thought a remarkable usefulness in the everyday work of professional life.

Hotel Lobbies and Lounges - The Architecture of Professional Hospitality (Paperback, New): Tom Avermaete, Anne Massey Hotel Lobbies and Lounges - The Architecture of Professional Hospitality (Paperback, New)
Tom Avermaete, Anne Massey
R1,719 Discovery Miles 17 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This series investigates the historical, theoretical and practical aspects of interiors. The volumes in the Interior Architecture series can be used as handbooks for the practitioner and as a critical introduction to the history of material culture and architecture. Hotels occupy a particular place in popular imagination. As a place of exclusive sociability and bohemian misery, a site of crime and murder and as a hiding place for illicit liaison, the hotel has embodied the dynamism of the metropolis since the eighteenth century. This book explores the architectural significance of hotels throughout history and how their material construction has reflected and facilitated the social and cultural practices for which they are renowned. Contemporary developments in the planning and design of hotels are addressed through a series of interviews and case studies. Illustrated throughout, this book is an innovative and important contribution to architectural and interior design theory literature.

Once Upon a China (Paperback): C.J. Lim, Steve McCloy Once Upon a China (Paperback)
C.J. Lim, Steve McCloy
R874 Discovery Miles 8 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Once Upon a China is an unconventional architectural story of great beauty, empathy, honour and sadness. The chapters are ingenious reimaginations of 'Dream of the Red Mansion', 'Journey to the West ', 'The Water Margin', and 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', and are conceived as specific themes of Chinese identity: domesticity, consumerism, democracy and adaptability. These four seminal pre-modern fictions contain diverse voices and philosophical perspectives on history as well as satires that have defined past developments of Chinese societies, politics and the built environment. Comics is an unorthodox but extraordinary medium for architectural speculations. The eccentric characteristics of comic-inspired drawings in this book enrich the processes of conception and conceptualisation of design - their fragmented yet sequential nature proves versatile in the imagination of spatial experiences, enabling the complex stories of place, brief and building to materialise. At the same time, the politicisation of architecture through comics engenders a sense of optimism to reappraise Chinese design futures and critical thinking beyond the exuberance of non-contextual Western capitalist models.
