Sugar Cane Cultivation and Management (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): H. Bakker Sugar Cane Cultivation and Management (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
H. Bakker
R5,329 Discovery Miles 53 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume is intended for reference by the commercial sugar cane grower. Disciplines are covered for the successful production of a sugar cane crop. A number of good books exist on field practices related to the growing of sugar cane. Two examples are R.P. Humbert's The Growing of Sugar Cane and Alex G. Alexander's Sugarcane Physiology. Volumes of technical papers, produced regularly by the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, are also a source of reference. Perhaps foremost, local associations, such as the South African Sugar Technologists' Association, do excellent work in this regard. In my forty-five years of experience with the day-to-day problems of producing a satisfactory crop of sugar cane, deciding what should be done to produce such a crop was not straightforward. Although the literature dealing with specific subjects is extensive, I tried to consolidate some of the material to provide the man in the field with information, or an overview of the subject matter.

Integrated Pest Management in the Tropics - Current Status & Future Prospects (Hardcover, New): A.N. Mengech Integrated Pest Management in the Tropics - Current Status & Future Prospects (Hardcover, New)
A.N. Mengech
R9,028 Discovery Miles 90 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was developed as an alternative to chemical pesticides following the widespread realization or their horrifying and damaging effects on environment, human, animal and plant health, which were vividly portrayed in Rachel Carsons book Silent Spring. The IPM approach involves the use of different tactics in compatible combinations to keep pest populations below the levels at which they cause economics injury. Thus. the IPM approach minimizes the use of chemical pesticides and avoids their harmful effects. The development and implementation of IPM has been increasing in North America with successful results. However, its role in tropical agriculture is less well known. For this reason, the United Nations Environment Programine (UNEP), and the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) undertook a global review of IPM to assess the impact of related activities in tropical regions of Asia. Africa and South America. This volume assesses the current status and future prospects for IPM in these regions, it provide a unique overview of the efforts made to develop and implement IPM for the pests of livestock and agroforestry in selected countries in the tropics (including India and China), as well as a survey of IPM strategies on a crop-by-crop basis for each continent. The book gives an honest appraisal of both the successes and failures of past IPM programmes and provides new paradigms and directions that IPM must develop, if it is to be adopted by farmers and governments on a scale necessary to change their current reliance on chemical pestioldes

The Biological Management of Tropical Soil Fertility (Hardcover): P. L. Woomer The Biological Management of Tropical Soil Fertility (Hardcover)
P. L. Woomer
R10,447 Discovery Miles 104 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Programme (TSBF) TSBF was established in 1984 under the patronage of the Man and Biosphere programme of Unesco and the Decade of the Tropics initiative of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The objective of the programme is to develop appropriate and innovative approaches for sustaining tropical soil fertility through the management of biological processes and organic resources. To achieve this objective, TSBF aspires to:
* make available to farmers and other land managers in the tropics methods of soil management which will improve agricultural productivity but conserve the soil resource
* contribute to increasing the carbon storage equilibrium in tropical soils in the face of global changes in land use and climate
* improve understanding of the role of biological resources in soil fertility and the sustainability of tropical land-use systems
* improve the research and training capacity of national institutions in the tropics in the fields of soil biology and management of tropical ecosystems.
TSBF is a voluntary participatory international research programme whose members are committed to the concept that the fertility of tropical soils is controlled by biological processes and can be managed by the manipulation of these processes. Research is conducted at both the ecosystem level and the process level on the basis of two principles: that the capacity to manage soil fertility depends on a mechanistic understanding of the biological processes regulating nutrient flux, organic matter dynamics and soil physical structure maintenance, and that successful management for sustainable soil fertility must be implemented at the ecosystem level by integrating soil biological processes with those of human decision making in relation to all components of the ecosystem.

Opportunities, Use, And Transfer Of Systems Research Methods In Agriculture To Developing Countries - Proceedings of an international workshop on systems research methods in agriculture in developing countries, 22-24 November 1993, ISNAR, The Hague (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
Peter Goldsworthy, F. W. Penning De Vries
R5,346 Discovery Miles 53 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In December 1993, ISNAR, in collaboration with International Consortium for Application of Systems Approaches, organized a three-day workshop on systems approaches and -modelling for agricultural development. Sponsored by the Dutch Ministry for Development Cooperation, the workshop was attended by participants from 12 national agricultural research systems (NARS), nine international agricul tural research centers (IARCs), and five advanced research organizations (AROs). Although application of systems approaches in agricultural research and resource management is a rather new field, there is already increasing demand for implemen tation of these approaches. This will require a critical mass of specialists in the NARS and IARCs. Before this critical mass can be obtained, however, the experience that has been gained in this area needs to be evaluated, further possibilities need to be explored, and new objectives and targets need to be set. This book, which contains the papers presented at the workshop, assesses the state of the art of systems approaches in agricultural research, resource management, and rural planning. It also gives an impression of the evolution of this interdisciplinary field and its use in national and international research centers. Another, less tangible, outcome of the workshop was its contribution toward strengthening the network of NARS, IARCs, and AROs. It gave participants and organizers a chance to develop contacts, and provided an opportunity to make the first proposals for collaborative programs. Special thanks are due to Peter Goldsworthy and Luc Boerboom for their crucial role in making the workshop a success in this regard."

Gender and Generation in Southeast Asian Agrarian Transformations (Paperback): Clara Mi Young Park, Ben White Gender and Generation in Southeast Asian Agrarian Transformations (Paperback)
Clara Mi Young Park, Ben White
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributions to this collection focus on the intersecting dynamics of gender, generation and class in Southeast Asian rural communities engaging with expanding capitalist relations, whether in the form of large-scale corporate land acquisition or other forms of penetration of commodity economy. Gender, and especially generation, are relatively neglected dimensions in the literature on agrarian and environmental transformations in Southeast Asia. Drawing on key concepts in gender studies, youth studies and agrarian studies, the chapters mark a significant step towards a gendered and 'generationed' analysis of capitalist expansion in rural Southeast Asia, in particular from a political ecology perspective. The collection highlights the importance of bringing gender and generation, in their interaction with class dynamics, more squarely into agrarian and environmental transformation studies. This is key to understanding the implications of capitalist expansion for social relations of power and justice, and the potential of these relations to shape the outcomes for different women and men, younger and older, in rural society. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of The Journal of Peasant Studies.

Crops and Carbon - Paying Farmers to Combat Climate Change (Paperback): Mike Robbins Crops and Carbon - Paying Farmers to Combat Climate Change (Paperback)
Mike Robbins
R1,553 Discovery Miles 15 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rich countries are paying poor countries to fight climate change on their behalf - and one way they are doing it is through carbon sinks. These are reservoirs of organic carbon tied up in plants and in the earth, rather than being in the atmosphere as greenhouse gases. This book looks critically at this mode of climate change mitigation. Can it work? Is it just? Will poorer countries benefit? The book considers the scientific, economic and ethical basis for this type of mitigation. Previous attention has been focused mainly on reducing emissions from deforestation and land degradation (REDD), but this book is one of the first attempts to examine the potential for carbon sinks in agriculture in crop plants and the soil. In assessing this, the author examines exactly how north-south climate mitigation trading works, or does not, and what the pitfalls are. It highlights the complex relationship between agriculture, particularly different forms of farming systems, and the mitigation of climate change. The arguments are backed up by original research with farmers in Brazil to demonstrate the challenges and prospects which these proposals offer in terms of payments for environmental services from agriculture through carbon trading.
