Winter Walks in the Lake District is a collection of enjoyable walks and easy winter climbs designed to make the most of the winter conditions that regularly descend on the Lake District. Local author Stephen Goodwin has selected his favourite cold-weather outings, which all share the magic and exhilaration that snow or even a hoar frost brings to the Lakeland fells. The routes include accessible jaunts up Gowbarrow, High Rigg and Latrigg, Keswick's 'house mountain' - an ideal spot to survey the snow cover on the bigger tops to the south; ascents of Helvellyn from the east and west, via classic and lesser-known ridgelines, or graded climbs on Browncove Crags and Nethermost Pike; high-level horseshoes above Haweswater and Langdale; and, of course, ascents of the classics - Scafell Pike, Blencathra, Great End - although not necessarily by the most travelled routes. Alongside advice on winter conditions and kit, each of the routes in this book features detailed introductions and directions, Ordnance Survey 1:25,000-scale maps, photo topos for the graded winter climbs where appropriate, and local information such as the best pubs and cafes.
The Northern Fells include the rolling Caldbeck and Uldale Fells - 'serene and restful, a perfect sanctuary for birds and animals and fell-walkers who prefer to be away from the crowds'; Skiddaw - 'an affable, friendly giant'; majestic Blencathra - 'the mountaineer's mountain'; Latrigg - the favourite of visitors to Keswick - and many more. They offer the walker excellent tramping and exhilarating freedom to wander at will.. The Pictorial Guides by A. Wainwright, written half a century ago, have been treasured by generations of walkers. This edition of The Northern Fells is freshly reproduced from Wainwright's original hand-drawn pages.
This guidebook by Italian walking expert Gillian Price describes 40 varied day walks in the region of Umbria, taking in the towns of Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto and Norcia. The walks range from 2.5km to 19km in length, the majority of the routes are circular, and several wonderful traverses have been included, with the return to the start point always possible by public transport. This guidebook also includes lots of practical information about recommended gear and maps to take and tips on local food, wildlife and culture, as well as useful tourist, accommodation and transport information and a brief Italian-English glossary. Set between Rome and Florence, the region is dotted with UNESCO World Heritage towns. The landscape, like that of neighbouring Tuscany, is one of rolling hills and deep woodlands, without the crowds of other well-known holiday regions in Italy. Walks cross flower meadows, wander down river valleys and also climb onto rugged hills and Apennine mountains, visiting Roman and Etruscan ruins as well as myriad ancient villages.
In Orkney, the first walk is a short stroll around Hoxa Head with its extensive views across Scapa Flow and subsequent routes go on to explore more widely over Mainland Orkney and take in the islands of Hoy, Rousay and South Ronaldsay, concluding with a ramble along the breathtaking clifftops of Yesnaby . n Shetland, the first walk sets out from Sandsayre jetty to the tiny island of Mousa. Walks range across Shetland from wild and remote Hermaness, on the far northern tip of Unst, down to Sumburgh Head, its most southerly point
Volume 3 of The Ultimate Guide to the Munros explores the dramatic landscape of the Northern Central Highlands. The Central Highlands area is the smallest of the six regions covered in the series, but is packed with more Munros than any other - so many that this area has been split into two books, Central Highlands South including Glen Coe and Central Highlands North including the Nevis Range. Volume 3 covers routes around Fort William, Inverness and Perth among many others, travelling along great changing landscape, from Loch Linnhe to the Great Ben Nevis. With all the features which made Volume 1 and 2 so popular, full colour maps and photographs throughout, details of all the practicable ascents up all the Munros and a comprehensive grading system, this is a must for hillwalkers.
The 38 summer day walking routes in this guidebook explore the renowned Stelvio National Park in the Italian Rhaetian Alps. Bordering the Dolomites to the east, and Switzerland to the west, the Stelvio is one of the largest protected areas in all of the Alps. The walks explore each of the Stelvio's valleys, are graded for difficulty and range from 4 to 18km. There is plenty for active holidaymakers; from easy strolls to strenuous climbs to panoramic summits for experienced walkers. The Stelvio's unspoilt landscape ranges from valley farmland to forested hillsides and alpine meadows, and up to a wilderness of rugged glaciated summits and ridges, the highest of which is Ortler, at 3905m. The guidebook also includes plenty of background information on local wildlife and cuisine, as well as planning details such as what to take and dos and don'ts. The guide also contains accommodation suggestions, including campsites, B&Bs, hotels and mountain huts in the National Parks picturesque towns and villages such as Bormio, Sulden and Martell Dorf. Close to Milan, Verona and Innsbruck, with good public transport throughout, the Stelvio National park offers extensive, spectacular Alpine walking, with this as the first English-language guide to the area.

A misread map, a sudden storm, a forgotten headlamp - and suddenly a leisurely hike can become a treacherous endeavour. In the past decade, cheap but sophisticated navigation devices and mobile phones have led to shocking levels of overconfidence on the trail. On top of this worrisome trend, the increasing popularity of mountain terrain has led those seeking solitude - or adrenaline - into increasingly remote or edgy forays. Sandy Stott, the "Accidents" editor at the journal of the Appalachian Mountain Club, delivers both a history and a celebration of the search-and-rescue workers who save countless lives in the White Mountains - along with a plea for us not to take their steadfastness and bravery for granted. Filled with tales of astonishing courage and sobering tragedy, Critical Hours will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and armchair adventurers alike.
