Guidebook to the Camino Ingles and Ruta do Mar camino routes
through north-west Spain to Santiago de Compostela. The 116km
Camino Ingles begins in Ferrol in Galicia and takes around a week
to complete. It offers reliable waymarking, pilgrim facilities, and
the opportunity to earn the Compostela certificate on completion.
An alternative start in A Coruna gives a walk of 73km. The Ruta do
Mar from Ribadeo provides a 190km coastal link between the Camino
del Norte and the Camino Ingles. A newly recovered camino, its
pilgrim infrastructure and waymarking is less well developed, but
for those seeking solitude it offers striking scenery along a wild
coastline. The book also includes an overview of a continuation
route from Santiago to 'the end of the world' at Finisterre on the
Atlantic coast. The guidebook presents the route in stages of a
day's walking. In addition to the route description, there is full
information on facilities, food and lodging, 1:100,000 scale maps
of the route and town maps for key locations. With notes on
preparation and planning, travel and equipment, a list of useful
sources of information, and a glossary, the book is an
indispensable companion for any one walking these caminos.
The 40 walks in this guidebook explore the stunning summer
landscapes around Briancon. Walks range from 4 to 21km, and cover
the valleys of Claree, Cerveyrette, Ayes, Durance and Guisane, as
well as the area around Vallouise and Montgenevre. All the routes
are circular and graded from easy to very hard, so there are walks
to suit all abilities. Alongside detailed route descriptions and
maps, the guidebook provides practical advice on when to visit and
the best bases for exploring the region. There are notes on plants
and wildlife, and information on the many hill forts in the area.
Stunning photographs add to the appeal of this informative guide.
The Brianconnais is a stunning mountain wilderness packed with
snow-capped peaks, idyllic Alpine valleys, pastures full of
wildflowers, sparkling alpine lakes, historic hill forts and a
labyrinth of quiet paths. With a rural charm and a milder climate
than the northern Alps, it is a region ripe for discovery, and this
guide is the perfect place to start.
'A paean to the beauty and majesty of nature, especially the nature
we overlook in our back gardens and local parks... And like all the
best books, it makes the world around you a lot more interesting' -
Spectator 'Beautifully written... I promise you will feel more in
tune with the world around after reading only one chapter of Wild
Signs and Star Paths, let alone the book in its entirety' - Royal
Institute of Navigation 'A beautifully written almanac of tricks
and tips that we've lost along the way' - Observer Tristan Gooley,
author of the internationally bestselling How To Read Water and The
Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues & Signs, shows how it is
possible to achieve a level of outdoors awareness that will enable
you to sense direction from stars and plants, forecast weather from
woodland sounds and predict the next action of an animal from its
body language - instantly. Although once common, this now rare
awareness would be labelled by many as a 'sixth sense'. We have
become so distanced from this way of experiencing our environment
that it may initially seem hard to believe that it is possible, but
Tristan Gooley uses a collection of 'keys' to show how everyone can
develop this ability and enjoy the outdoors in an exciting way -
one that is both new and ancient.
Walking, Landscape and Environment explores walking as a method of
research and practice in the humanities and creative arts, emerging
from a recent surge of growth in urban and rural walking. This
edited collection of essays from leading figures in the field
presents an enquiry into, and a critique of, the methods and
results of cutting-edge 'walking research'. Walking negotiates the
intersections between the human self, place and space, offering a
cross-disciplinary collaborative method of research which can be
utilised in areas such as ecocriticism, landscape architecture,
literature, cultural geography and the visual arts. Bringing
together a multitude of perspectives from different disciplines, on
topics including health and wellbeing, disability studies, social
justice, ecology and gender, this book provides a unique appraisal
of the humanist perspective on landscape. In doing so, it
challenges Romantic approaches to walking, applying new ideas in
contemporary critical thought and alternative perspectives on
embodiment and trans-corporeality.
Samuel Johnson famously observed that 'when a man is tired of
London, he is tired of life' and no one would deny that the city is
an exciting and stimulating place to live, offering a wealth of
diversions. However, even old Sam would no doubt agree that
sometimes you need a change of scenery - to escape the city's
constant hustle and bustle and visit somewhere with a gentler,
slower and quieter pace of life. When you yearn for some bracing
sea air or wish to commune with nature, experience life in an
idyllic village or imagine you're lord of the manor, get up close
and personal with some exotic wildlife or treat the kids to an
exhilarating day out, London Escapes will point you in the right
direction. Containing over 70 great day trips, from historical
towns and charming villages to magnificent stately homes and
gardens; nostalgic seaside resorts and lovely beaches to
spectacular parks and nature reserves - whether you're seeking
relaxation or adventure, town of country, ancient or modern, we
have the perfect day out for you. A plethora of tour operators
offer coach trips to major attractions from London - including some
of the destinations featured in this book - or you can travel by
private car. However, we believe in letting the 'train take the
strain', which is the most relaxing and often the fastest way to
travel. All the places highlighted can be reached in under two
hours by train (or car) and many in under an hour - usually by
direct trains. Travelling by car usually takes longer and you also
have the problem and added expense of parking. However, some
destinations, particularly those without a direct rail link from
London, are easier to reach by car (and one - Woburn Safari Park -
is only accessible by car), which also allows you to tour an area
and visit nearby attractions at the same time. A good day out
deserves a good lunch and London Escapes contains recommendations -
historic pubs, relaxing restaurants and cosy cafes - where you can
be assured of a tasty meal. Many venues - such as stately homes,
gardens and theme parks - also have on-site cafes/restaurants and
provide dedicated picnic areas. So, why not escape the city for a
day and explore the exciting world just an hour or two from your
doorstep? We trust that you will enjoy discovering it as much as we
did.

One of the premier tourist attractions of the eastern United
States, the Blue Ridge Parkway stretches from Shenandoah National
Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in
western North Carolina. This volume relates the author's
one-of-a-kind backpacking trip along the 469-mile road, along with
his observations and recollections regarding the Parkway, the most
visited unit of the National Park Service. Beginning with his
experience as a summer college intern, the book also covers the
twelve years he spent working as a ranger on the Blue Ridge
Parkway. Anecdotal history and accounts from some of the Parkway's
earliest rangers complete this tale of one of our country's
national treasures. The appendix contains a chronological,
mile-by-mile re-creation of Pegram's 2003 trek, including the names
of all the Parkway landmarks mentioned in the book.
