Funny People (DVD)

Having seen the trailer for this movie, it should be obvious that this is not going to be a lame-brain goofy comedy. Instead, what you get is a brilliantly original comedy drama. The laughs are quite abundant, and smart at the same time. But there are also moments of sadness and reflection, and the best evidence is witnessed by Adam Sandler's very "grown-up" role.

Sandler plays George Simmonds, a huge Hollywood star. After starting out as a stand-up comic, George progressed into silly, yet profitable popcorn comedies. In the process, he's become more famous and wealthy than he's ever dreamed of, but unfortunately he still feels that something is missing from his life. And into his life steps Ira Wright, an up-and-coming comic, played smartly by Seth Rogen. The two become friends, but there's a constant love-hate relationship at work, and soon Ira starts "working" for George.

There's so much more to the plot, but unfortunately, it would be sacrilegous of me to spoil any of it. I can say though that this movie expertly shows a side of Hollywood we rarely see, the lives of those who want to reach stardom but are always just on the fringes of success. An added bonus is the huge number of celebrity cameos by comedians all playing themselves, namely Ray Romano, Paul Reiser, Andy Dick and Sarah Silverman to name a few. One of the funniest scenes involves Romano being "verbally" attacked in a classy restaraunt by none other than foul-mouthed Eminem.

Sandler and Rogen both bring expression and depth to their perfomances, and it's great to finally see Sandler "act" in a story that actually has something to say about the perils of fame. A terrific movie! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
