"Do you promise, do you promise" she said when she first found out,
as I comforted her holding in my tears and promising her she
wouldn't die. I explained that she was young and that the cancer
must have been caught early. As time passed, she got worse and
worse, hope faded and dreams disappeared. The only way I could
think, to honour the promise I had made was to immortalise her in
my poetry.
