These essays, originally presented at a conference held at the
University of Pennsylvania in March 1984, show that particular U.S.
policies have played an important role in engendering resentment of
the United States in the so-called Third World. The first chapter
presents an overview of the problem and proposes the structure of
an approach to it, including a typology of anti-Americanism. This
is followed by essays which are country-specific or regional in
scope (Mexico, Latin America, the Arab World, Turkey, South Asia,
Malaysia, Africa) in which the contributors flesh out some of the
cultural, ideological, and historical factors which have influenced
the particular expressions of anti-Americanism in various parts of
the third world. Finally, three contributors analyze the phenomenon
in functional areas (the multinational corporations, the United
Nations) and in terms of implications for the United States.
