Various Artists - When A Man Loves A Woman (DVD)

San Francisco couple Michael (Andy Garcia) and Alice Green (Meg Ryan) have a happy marriage until the latter's secret drinking binges become a problem. While Michael is away on business, a drunken Alice hits their daughter - an act which convinces her to enrol at a clinic and dry out. Michael does not find coping without his wife easy, and when Alice returns, sober but irritable, their relationship continues to suffer.

Romantic drama, starring Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. If anybody can fathom out any real relevance between the title of this one (which is also that of a well-known pop song sung by Percy Sledge) and the story…I’d like to hear from you! The screenplay is reminiscent of <i>Days of Wine and Roses;</i> a highly-acclaimed movie of the 1960s that starred Jack Lemon and Lee Remick. In <i>this</i> picture, Michael Green (Andy Garcia) and Alice Green (Meg Ryan) are a young married couple, one of whom develops a serious alcohol problem. The other partner does their level best to help the alcohol-sufferer to overcome it…but as the sufferer starts overcoming the difficulty, so the other now becomes drawn into the drink problem! Both the leads are very good indeed; as is Ellen Burstein who plays another recovering alcoholic. Meg Ryan who was 33 when the film was made, is still “cute,” but now seems to appear in roles that are too young for Nicole Kidman to play anymore.
