The Notorious B.I.G. was one of the greatest rap MC's, and his future was ultimately cut short way too soon. And being a devoted fan, one might wonder if any movie about his life could do him any justice. And the answer is an unequivocal YES!

The movie starts on that fateful night in Los Angeles in March 1997, and once the gunshots ring out we flashback to a young Christopher Wallace. As a boy he was constantly teased by girls because of his weight, and he couldn't foresee a future for himself, which eventually leads him down the path of drug dealing. But as a young teen, he loved writing rhymes and became a natural at rapping, an artform that was becoming more mainstream and popular as the 80's became the 90's.

Soon, we see the rise of a man who as much as he tries to be successful with his music, can't escape the trappings of fame and a past which will eventually try to bring him down.

The acting perfomance from newcomer Jamal Woolard as Biggie is impressively spot-on, as he seems to understand the character down to the tee. And he gets able support from the legendary Angela Bassett as his long-suffering mother Volletta, and even Derek Luke, as Puff Daddy, manages to shine in his role. The rest of the cast are mostly newcomers but you would never know it from their perfomances. The real stand-out is Antonique Smith who plays Faith Evans. Her performance is passionate and honest and evokes a sympathy for a character who had to endure alot.

The soundtrack is filled to the brim with Biggie's signature tracks, and the way they segue into the movie is effortless and ultimately a vital cog in the story of this legend. And the real-life footage at the end is bound to weaken even the hardest of hearts. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

In just a few short years, Notorious B.I.G. rose from the streets of Brooklyn to become one of the most influential hip hop artists of all time.

B.I.G. was a gifted storyteller; his narratives about violent life on the streets were told with a gritty, objective realism that won him enormous respect and credibility. His rhymes were universal and gave a voice to his generation.

This is the story of the life of a true legend.
