Once again, CID Chief Inspector Alan Markby and Consular Service
Agent Meredith Mitchell (A Fine Place for Death, 1995, etc.) join
forces to solve a murder. The victim - slain (by lethal injection)
at the Chelsea Flower Show - is Alex Constantine, ne Georges Wahid,
a well-to-do importer from Cyprus, married to Markby's ex-wife
Rachel. Rachel's home is Malefis Abbey, a baronial mansion in the
village of Lynstone, and it's there that an investigation is
started by Scotland Yard's mean-spirited Superintendent Hawkins.
Meredith and Markby are also there, in response to Rachel's plea
for their support - Meredith as houseguest; Markby staying at the
fusty Lynstone House Hotel, garnering gossip on locals like Nevil,
the wimpy son of hard-bitten Molly James, who runs a boarding
kennel and who bitterly resents her son's infatuation with Rachel
Constantine. There's gossip too about Miriam Troughton, the hotel
owner's wife, an out-of-sync figure of continental chic who takes
off for parts unknown whenever boredom strikes. Meanwhile,
Meredith, enjoying the lavish gardens at Malefis, groomed to
perfection by French gardener Martin, narrowly escapes injury from
a stone ornament rigged to fall. More serious complications arise
when young Gillian Hardy, Molly's kennel helper, is found stabbed
to death in the aviary. The final unravelling of the over-the-top
plotting behind it all defies both description and belief. The
reader's sole consolation here is the author's warm and nimble way
with the slow-paced English village scene and its not-so-sluggish
characters. (Kirkus Reviews)
A face from the past has stoked many jealous fires... Meredith
Mitchell and Chief Inspector Markby set out to find the killer with
the poisoned thorn in Flowers for his Funeral, the seventh
compelling mystery from Ann Granger's Mitchell & Markby series.
This thrilling whodunit will enthral fans of LJ Ross, Agatha
Christie and ITV's Midsomer Murders. 'To be savoured' - Publishers
Weekly When Meredith Mitchell bumps into her old school friend
Rachel Hunter at the Chelsea Flower Show, it doesn't take Meredith
long to realise that she and the effortlessly self-confident blonde
have even less in common now than they had as teenagers. Apart from
one thing - Meredith's companion, Chief Inspector Markby. For to
the embarrassment of all concerned, except of course the
self-possessed Rachel, Meredith's old school friend turns out to
have been Markby's former wife, from whom he was divorced years
before in less than friendly circumstances. The meeting with Rachel
is not the only surprise the Flower Show has in store for Markby -
before the afternoon is out he has a death on his hands. All too
quickly he and Meredith find themselves drawn into the plush,
apparently well-run world Rachel and her second husband created for
themselves in their Cotswold home, Malefis Abbey, a world which
Markby becomes increasingly convinced harbours a highly skilled
murderer ... What readers are saying about Flowers for his Funeral:
'What a twist in the tale! Completely unexpected' 'A typical
whodunit book, but written in such a wonderful way, you can't put
these books down' 'One of the best Mitchell & Markby books'
