This is the fourth novel to feature Fran Varady, an aspiring young actor/detective currently of no fixed abode, unless you count the floor of the garage attached to the local newsagent's shop. Fran is deeply disturbed when a private enquiry agent informs her that her mother, long absent from her daughter's life, is still alive but on her death bed, and anxious to obtain a favour. With reluctance, Fran accepts her mother's commission, to find the daughter she gave up soon after birth, and is soon caught up in an intrigue which has murderous consequences. Fran has to examine her ideas about what constitutes a family, while her life depends on choosing her friends wisely.
