Ask most people about Diepsloot and they will talk of vigilante
justice, political unrest, poverty and unemployment, a scene of
recent political protests and xenophobic violence, a haven for
criminals and undocumented foreigners in the middle of one of the
country’s wealthiest areas. Diepsloot is a microcosm – a
post-apartheid settlement with about 250 000 crammed into five
square miles, with more than its fair share of youth, foreigners
and unemployed – a way of understanding the politics of this
