[vorl]The phrase ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ became a symbolic image of
the Holocaust and the camps. It was used by artists to depict the
harsh reality of incarceration in the camps, and to engage with the
denial of human freedom, due to the prisoners’ opposition to the
violent and oppressive regime. This book shows how the ‘Arbeit
Macht Frei’ image is depicted, how it is used, and its meaning in
connection to Holocaust memory.
