Herrmann's Swan Song...
Mon, 24 Jun 2013 | Review
by: Njabulo P.
The music for Martin Scorsese's classic film "Taxi Driver" was composed by Bernard Herrmann, who was once a frequent collaborator of Alfred Hitchcock. This score was very unlike anything that Herrmann had composed before: It is characteristically Jazzy. The music, most notably the saxophone, represents the 'sleaze' of New York City. The music is the very heart and soul of the main character of the film, Travis Bickle (played by Robert De Niro in his most iconic). The first track on the album includes a few takes of the main theme. The last couple of tracks on the album are alternate interpretations of the music, played by different ensembles. One track includes Robert De Niro's dialogue and everything else inbetween is the original score for which Herrmann was posthumously award a BAFTA and nominated for an Academy Award along with "Obsession". The music climaxes right up to the gruesome finale of the film. This, in my opinion, is one of Herrmann's greatest works and anyone interested in film music should pick this up. Interestingly, this was the last film that Bernard Herrmann worked on: He died on the 24th of December 1976 in his sleep, a few hours after he finished recording this music. Enjoy
