Slightly off-beat family-rated adventure fantasy, with an aging Bill Murray as Cole - the less-than-scrupulous mayor of the futuristic underground refuge city of Ember. With the ever-increasing number of blackouts caused by the malfunctioning of the hydro-electric power unit, it becomes obvious that Ember will not be able to sustain human life much longer.
Two young people, Linda (Saorise Ronan) and Doon (Harry Treadway) start investigating clues left in a box at her home by one of her ancestors, who was a former mayor in times gone by. This leads them to a series of marvelous adventures - with even a giant mole thrown in for good measure!
The well-picked cast that also includes Tim Robbins (as 'Barrow' Harrow - Doon's dad); Martin Landau; Amy and Catherine Quinn, and Toby Jones, all contribute to make their characters more believable than is customary for films of this genre - though director Gil Kenan would appear to have a strange and obsessive passion for the colour red in this production.
For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights - underground. But Ember's once powerful generator is failing . . . and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker.
Now, in a race against time, the citizens must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city's existence, and escape before the lights go out forever.
