Mr Woodcock (DVD)

With the sexual connotation of the surname saying it all, Jasper Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton) is quite literally the PT instructor from hell!

Many young pupils suffered under his sadistic instruction – including John Fairley (Sean William Scott – looking here looks like a young Dennis Quaid), who is now a successful best-selling celebrity author. Returning home after several years (much against his glamorous agent’s wishes) to attend a minor local award for his achievements, John learns to his abject horror that his still-beautiful widowed mother Beverley (Susan Sarandon) is about to marry…Mr Woodcock!

Together with many of his former schoolmates who had also been subjected to the torture and humiliation of Woodcock’s so-called teaching methods, John hatches numerous schemes to try to discredit and thwart his nemesis…but Woodcock comes up smelling of roses to Beverley every time!

The ending is a feminine but pleasing one – though not quite what we’d been expecting!

The comedy is well-sustained throughout, and I would have like to have seen more of Amy Poeler, who plays the far-too-brief role of John’s blonde agent. She really is a comedienne-de-luxe!

Outrageous comedy starring Seann William Scott and Billy Bob Thornton. Jon Farley (Scott), a self-help author returns to his hometown to discover that his mother (Susan Sarandon) has fallen in love with his old high school nemesis, Mr Woodcock (Thornton), the gruff, no-nonsense gym teacher who put him through years of mental and physical humiliation. Determined to prevent history from repeating itself, John sets out to stop his mother from marrying the man who made life miserable for him and his classmates.
