A whirlwind of a book, in which the reader is kept in almost constant motion by a narrative of unflagging action. Oliver and Charlie, two brothers who work for a bank, see an opportunity to free themselves from economic bondage forever. The crime seems victimless, as the person whose money they decide to appropriate has died leaving no-one but the government to inherit his large fortune. Further, the senior of the two brothers discovers that his boss is deliberately spoiling his chances of entering a good business school, in order to take advantage of his skills in the firm while paying him a low salary. Their final incentive is that their mother, who brought them up unaided, is struggling to pay even the interest on hospital bills incurred throughout their childhood. However, what the brothers do not realize is that they are not the only members of the firm aware of the possibility of profitable fraud. The scam is being considered by those lower down the scale as well as at Chief Executive level. And are those Secret Service guys really working on the government's behalf? The plot is still further complicated when Charlie and Oliver meet a mysterious and seductive woman, who perhaps has a better claim to the money than they do. Meltzer keeps the plot moving by making his characters run. The novel is full of chases, fights, travel by aeroplane and car. No-one the brothers encounter is what they seem, and until the denouement it is always unclear who is friend, who deadly foe. The characters are lightly sketched, as the novel never pauses long enough for analysis, but the brothers are sufficiently different for some tension to be created through their interaction. An additional pleasure is the fundamental conceit of the novel, the image of a virtual reality powerful enough to change lives, and cause deaths. (Kirkus UK)
Two brothers, one an executive at a bank and the other in an entry-level position, hatch a plot to steal three million dollars. Using a sophisticated computer program, they plan to transfer the money into an account only they can access. But after the transaction has been completed, they quickly realize that rather than three million dollars, they stole three hundred million. The secret service are called in to investigate and Charlie and Oliver soon find themselves on the run not only from the law, but from the people they stole the money from. Using technology to alter their identity and conceal their personal records, the people hunting them down use the same technology to track their whereabouts. It's a high-speed game of cat and mouse, filled with twists and turns that are sure to have readers racing to the last page.
