House Atreides, the first volume in Brian Herbert's continuation of his father Franks classic Dune saga, was slow to exert an initial grip, but was soon full of the energy and invention of the original books (helped, one might suspect, by the sterling contributions of co-author Kevin J Anderson). The second Prelude to Dune kept up the momentum of its predecessor even if the achievement didnt match the work of Herbert p?re. And now the third (and concluding) volume works up a remarkable head of steam in its massive tale of the blood feud between the houses of Atreides and Harkonnen. The war which is to establish a new world order has begun. Emperor Shaddam IV lashes out ruthlessly from the royal planet Kaitain at the subject worlds that defy him; his trump card, he believes, is the synthetic spice which he alone will control. On Dune, Liet Kynes masses the revived Fremen for daring strikes against the Harkonnen tyrants, while the liberation of the subjugated planet Ix from its brutal Tleilaxu overlords is being orchestrated by Prince Rhomburt Vernius, in exile on Caladan. But the ultimate battle is to be waged between Leto Atreides of Caladan and Vladimir Harkonnen of Giedi Prime. As before, the political backstabbing and galaxy-spanning heroics are brought off with great dash, and those who cant get enough of Herbert Sr.s world of deserts, spice and sandworms will find this trilogy a very welcome return to a fascinating universe. (Kirkus UK)
The blood feud between Duke Leto of Caladon and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen reaches its climax, as the emperor Shaddam - leader of House Corrino - is finally forced to curb the powerful Harkonnens or risk losing his own throne. Menawhile, Duke Leto's beautiful concubie, the Bene Gesserit temptress Jessica,- has conceived the boy who become Paul Atreides (the hero of Dune), defying the express orders of her superiors. The book culminates in a war - on Dune, on the oppressed planet Ix, in space - that will alter the balance of power for a generation.
