From a story by Mary Hayley Bell (mother of Hayley Mills), producer Richard Attenborough and director Bryan Forbes have crafted a most beautiful, moving, and thought-provoking drama.
An escaped convicted murderer (bearded Alan Bates) hides out in a country barn where Cathy (Hayley Mills) accidentally discovers him. When she asks who he is, he answers with an expletive – so she firmly believes him to be Jesus! Cathy, her younger sister Nan (Diane Holgate) and brother Charles (Alan Barnes) agree amongst themselves to look after him by way of smuggling small amounts of food – and once even a bottle of wine! – out of their home and take it to him.
News of this “second coming” soon spreads amongst all of the village children, who try their best to keep their secret from the adults – whom they believe would harm him if they found out.
In the climactic scene when the police eventually arrive to arrest him, we see him being frisked in silhouette, standing with his arms outstretched in a crucifix-like position!
The face of Bernard Lee, who plays Cathy’s widower father, should be familiar to many. Remember him as “M” in the earlier James Bond films?
A man (Alan Bates) on the run for murder hides out at a nearby
barn. Through a series of bizarre twists he is discovered by three
children (Hayley Mills, Diane Holgate and Alan Barnes), who believe
they have stumbled across Jesus and attempt to keep him hidden from
the grown-ups. Based on the novel by Hayley Mill's mother, Mary
Hayley Bell.
