This wonderful film starts very similarly to Disney’s earlier classic, Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It’s World War II, and four London children – Peter, Edmond, Susan and Lucy - are being evacuated to a safer, country area, where they will stay in the large home of eccentric professor Digory Kirke (Jim Boradbent). While playing hide-and-seek: Lucy hides in a wardrobe…to find that it is the gateway between our world and a magical land called Narnia – where all the animals can talk! Narnia is being kept in perpetual winter by Jadis (Tilda Swinton) the evil white witch. To their amazement, the children learn that they are the key to breaking the witch’s spell! To this end, and together with the animals, they ally themselves with the mighty lion, Aslan. But one of their number accidentally betrays them along the way…
The Beavers steal every scene! Beautifully filmed, and with a great musical score by Hans Zimmer: the Christ-like biblical allegory is undeniable. However, very young children may find parts of it scary.
My only negative comment is that its 143 minutes of running time could be shortened considerably without losing anything of importance.
Sent to wait out the war in the English countryside, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie discover Professor Digory Kirke's mysterious wardrobe, in actuality a gateway to the magical land of Narnia. With the aid of Alsan the lion, can they break the spell of the White Witch and end Narnia's eternal winter?
